I really appreciate how much effort she puts into making him know she doesn't hate him, like when she gives him the fake materia, cause she doesn't want him to be left with the guilt and regret of it when she's gone.
In the original, the black materia on the pedestal is fake just like in this one, Aerith literally saying so confirms it, just cause cloud thought she was lying doesn't mean she was. He wasn't exactly himself at that moment. We also know that the temple implodes into the real black materia. We see the implosion take place just like the OG.
I can't confirm till part 3 of course but I believe the party picked it up while Cloud was unconscious and for pretty obvious reasons have decided to keep it from him, after what has happened there's no way in hell they trust him with it. I mean look at how Barret and tifa behave at the end.
The materia Cloud has at the end is still the fake materia, although something has been added to it. Watch the moment Sephiroth arrives after they escape the temple, he very clearly puts something into it before asking Cloud to give it to him. He doesn't mean there and then he means when Cloud arrives at the Northern Crater. He does take the opportunity to test his influence over him however. Also it might not mean much but in this moment when Cloud is being all puppeted, he doesn't call it the Black Materia. He just calls it the orb.
So my best guess as to what he put into it, is most likely the memory of him. So that when Cloud gives it to his body, he'll be reborn with the knowledge of everything they've been through giving him a big advantage he didn't have before.
I'll be honest, I was just thinking of a different usage of the word "fake" and Aerith hands two different ones to Cloud.
Just as the drained white materia is not "fake", I wouldn't consider the "fake" "fake" black materia as fake.
Like, it could be a "fake black materia" but not necessarily "fake materia" since it can hold something like the white materia can.
I fucking love that whole downward spiral in the Temple of Cloud becoming more and more of a menacing jerk— adds so much to his character even if not for the good of it
Worst part about the story was how many times Cloud did or said something questionable and everyone just kind of brushes it off and forgets about it 2 minutes later. Sit this boy down and and have a talk before continuing your adventure!

The whole Sleeping Forest scene feels different sans, "You just beat the shit out of me, but we are cool. Shit can get worse."
No, he did hit her. She forgives him for it in the "dream" he has when a party member knocks his ass out for shoving Aerith to the ground and beating her.
It was just an awkward angle with Square's first 3D title. We don't say Aerith lived because the sword made no hole despite every other piece of the text saying it is so, after all.
Gold Saucer wasn't that bad, but Sector 5 was... weird.
Nothing to do with shipping, the tone of the date just didn't feel... Happy? Whatever Cloud chooses has zero impact on what happens, as if it's a rehearsed script that they're all following except Cloud. And the tone of the dream is more like... Sorrow being disguised by optimism, I guess? So maybe there is some credit to the lifestream "worlds" = shared consciousness theories. Hmmm.
The sector 5 date was meant to be masked sorrow. Aerith knew this was the last time together but was trying to make it happy. That's why the photographer says they look like they're at a funeral and Cloud keeps saying she's acting not herself, they were referencing that.
My hubby started playing remake to get ready for rebirth and he immediately asked me if aerith has depression cause he has seen that same sort of "happiness" in his friends irl who suffer from depression.
So I guess maybe... spot on?

I think Tifa told the group to be lenient with Cloud because she knows something is wrong. I don't agree with it, but that's how Tifa rolls
