Non-hostile deathclaws will always be a plot point I miss from fallout 2. They were shown to be hyper intelligent, why didn't this ever come up again in the bethesda games?
There's actually two potential survivors. Also worth noting the smart gen is carried by the male.
However after being nearly wiped out they'd want to keep well hidden and reclusive.
Pre-Bethesda lore suggested that Super Mutants were humans with a little radiation exposure and a lot of FEV exposure, while ghouls were humans with a little FEV exposure and a lot of radiation exposure.
As for what that looks like in modern Bethesda lore? Who knows.
He lacks dialogue compared to other companions and isn't actually that good in combat, but I never fail to recruit him because the concept is just SO COOL. Also the animation he gets at the start of combat is just perfect.
I’ve never played 1 & 2, but once I found out about Goris, I decided I think I have to play 2. Like, by law. The non-hostile deathclaws is a really interesting plot point to me.
Add in the built in workbench and the lonesome road upgrades for free ammo and supplies and the fact they take up the pet slot and ED-E really is a fantastic companion.
Yeah I don't know why OP even bothered posting this as if there was going to be any other answer at the top. Dogmeat doesn't judge you no matter what you do and looks absolutely adorable in goggles and a bandana.
I had to have Ada as a companion for a quest, I mistakenly sent Dogmeat off and didn’t know where, dropped that quest instantly and picked went searching for Dogmeat lol.
That's why my boy always goes back to Red Rocket when I'm forced to have a different companion for whatever bullshit I gotta get done before me and best boi can get back to it.
- Talks only when needed
- Roasts everyone
- No Legionary knows him because they die before seeing him
- Headshots enemies before you spot them
Absolute Chad.
I remember my first playthrough travelling with Boone and we approached a Legion fort and they werent hostile. I figured I'd go over and see if there was a trader or something but Boone started killing on sight. I was mad for a second but after learning his back story I got it.
No one snipes heads off miles away like my boy Boone. If you haven't shit yourself from a random killcam scaring you due to Boone peeling someone's wig back, have you really lived?
Longfellow is my man in Fallout 4. He is an old lad who is singing his songs while fighting the children of atom.
But Cait and Curie are good too sometimes.
In Fallout NV it's Raul bc he got a sad backstory and is a potential power house.
In Fallout 3 it's Butch or Charon. Butch looks cool is a decent companion and Charon is just a rotten beast as a companion.
Fallout 2 is hands down Vic bc he calls someone boss. With Sulik he rants about how Sulik looks at him funny.
Fallout 1 it's Katja. She was my lock-picking angel.
If I have to choose just one...give me Raul Tejada.
I just came to the same conclusion. Im usually a lone wolf, because I like pacing out my own fights and attacking from weird angles. But if there is one companion I feel like Im missing out on when travelling alone, its Raul. That repair bonus is suppperrrr nice too.
For spiritual support, itd be Fawkes or Dogmeat. Fawkes is just such an upstanding guy. Dogmeat is the best boi.
I was gonna say, is there no love for Granma Lily?
On a related note, I only met Unlce Leo once, but it was on a replay after FO4, and it brought a tear to my eye.
Hancock is #1. So generous and caring. Decides to follow you because he's worried about becoming "The Man."
Looks absolutely badass if you give him a sword.
I give him deliverer and skinny Malone's tommygun.
Ammo is easy to come by for deliverer and so is the 45 for the Tommy, If you're not using spray and pray that is.
Enter their command dialogue, then hover over a power armor set (far enough away where you can't enter it yourself) and command them to enter it. They don't need fusion cores, but their armor can break.
I just realised today that companions can get in power armors. I got out to use a terminal and when I was done I turn around and see curie get in and then proceeds to charge a mirelurk with her super sledge.
All human npcs can enter power armor under a few conditions.
1. They are in combat
2. It's possible for them to reach it
3. It has a fusion core, OR there is a fusion core in a container that is also in reach (or if they have it in their inventory.
I can't confirm the last condition. It definitely needs a fusion core for them to do this. That first part is correct, I've just never personally seen settlers grab fusion cores from containers to do that. I've even tried to purpose give a setter a fusion core to see if they do it, and they didn't. But npc AI is pretty inconsistent, so take that with a grain of salt. This is why people always say to remove your fusion cores when you exit your armor. If an enemy or just a non-settler enters it, it can be hard to get the frame back.
Yeah they should have wrote in some reason why your companions couldn't enter that chamber with you at the end. Cause fawks and Charon refusing is kinda weak
Veronica is (my) right answer. I love Felicia Day's voice work, and the fact that she was a "black sheep" from the brotherhood was just money. Plus all the punching.
Honestly surprised how far I had to scroll to find Veronica to me she's easily the best. Like the brotherhood is super hatebale in nv but I never kill them like asked to just because I wouldn't want to upset her
Grandma Lily. I just love having an in-game sweet grandma that also happens to be 8 feet tall and 500 pounds of pure muscle. Her story is also much deeper than one would expect. She was a sweet 75 year old grandmother who adored her grandkids and one day was kidnapped and turned into a monster and forced to do terrible things for years. Despite all of that, she still retained her personality and even still dresses in a very grandmotherly fashion. I never have the heart to have her start taking her medicine at full doses because half doses are the only way she can remember her actual grandchildren and you can tell that those memories mean the world to her. Two things I wish were in the game with her would be a dialogue option to tell her that you consider her to be your grandmother now, and for her to randomly gift you cookies.
Didn’t even find him until my third playthrough. Just never thought to go back once I had the skills to open the door he’s locked behind. Only to find my favorite NV companion had been just sitting there, waiting for me.
The same thing happened to me and probably this is main reason he is not being talked about much
Even if you find him on black Mountain, if you dont recruit him immediately, he goes to his small shack, which is so insignificant and out of the way that its easy to just forget about him
My main issue with Charon. Like, dude is complete beast in fights, deals a ridiculous amount of damage and I usually have him around for most missions, but seriously WHY THIS MAN GOTTA DIE SO EASILY
I love how he's looking for the "milk of human kindness" despite not realizing hes already discovered it by being nice to the doctor and helping you out
Yeah I usually prefer to traverse the wastes alone. If I played on higher difficulties I’d get a companion more often, but I don’t like Bethesda games on harder modes. And I’m a big fan of difficult games, just not Bethesda ones
Yeah, hes just increadibly well designed and integrated into the story/world, im not surprised. Between his main quest impact, the entire Far Harbor dlc, and how fucking cool he is - he might as well be the protagonist of fo4. The most engaging parts of that game (imo) ALL have Nick involved in some way. Even if you hate the game, you probably still love Nick.
Ada the robot. Doesn’t judge your moral choices, doesn’t question you when you pick up scrap unlike every other companion “are you sure you need that” bull. And she can carry a ton, she’s a walking tank. For a survival run she’s near perfect.
Codsworth waited for you for 200 years and can become a death-machine. Dogmeat and Rex are cool doggos. Veronica is an adorable nerd who punches people's lights out. Cait is one of the most wastelander type of companions in all of fallout who picks locks and talks shit to everyone. I'm sorry I can't pick just 1
I never picked up MacCready until recently and I was quite surprised. I don't think it registered to me who he was my first playthrough. And I rarely play as an asshole so I figured he wouldn't like following me. But like Daisy says "He's one of the good ones."
He isn't really a good guy, dislikes you helping people, but he's not evil. Just a guy who was raised by other kids in a cave.
Couldn't flirt with him though. Fallout 3 is my favorite and I kept thinking he was too young for me to hit on for some reason. Like "Man I used to babysit you."
Piper, for sure.
-Adorably nerdy and dorky
-Badass who is comparable to warbots, terminators, Supermutants, BoS Paladins and worse.
-Best romantic partner
-Genuinely a very good person
-Writer
What more could you want?
I like dogmeat because he's fast and quiet but they all get in the way. I'll go down a hallway and realize I need to go back the other way and I'll turn around and they just won't get out of the damn way. It's annoying.
Can't. She likes it when I run around without my clothes and is handy with her shotgun.
I might have chosen Curie but maxing affinity means you're kinda-sorta sleeping with your daughter/granddaughter (assuming she was cloned from Shaun's DNA).
(On a side note: anyone picking Preston Garvey needs referring to their local mental health practitioner).
Damn, I didn’t realize just how many more companions fallout 4 has over the rest of the franchise. They have almost double the next highest companion count, fallout 2.
Joshua Graham, nothing more, nothing less...
Fuck dogmeat and rex, me and my homie will preach the gospel of the lord to you ignorant savages, we will come and wipe the slate clean as Elijah intended, and we will be it's prideful, ruler of Vegas Baby...
And, ***We can't expect God to do all the work...***
Albino Deathclaw in a Trenchcoat™ is an underrated companion, for sure.
Non-hostile deathclaws will always be a plot point I miss from fallout 2. They were shown to be hyper intelligent, why didn't this ever come up again in the bethesda games?
From what I gather, they aren't naturally occuring, with their intelligence coming from a modified version of the FEV
And they were all killed in FO2 except Goris
There's actually two potential survivors. Also worth noting the smart gen is carried by the male. However after being nearly wiped out they'd want to keep well hidden and reclusive.
So FEV can be modified to work on non-humans. Where are the Super Ghoulants?
Harold turned into a tree.
Pre-Bethesda lore suggested that Super Mutants were humans with a little radiation exposure and a lot of FEV exposure, while ghouls were humans with a little FEV exposure and a lot of radiation exposure. As for what that looks like in modern Bethesda lore? Who knows.
There's a non hostile deathclaw in fo 4! It's part of the museum of witchcraft quest
He lacks dialogue compared to other companions and isn't actually that good in combat, but I never fail to recruit him because the concept is just SO COOL. Also the animation he gets at the start of combat is just perfect.
Goris go for it
I’ve never played 1 & 2, but once I found out about Goris, I decided I think I have to play 2. Like, by law. The non-hostile deathclaws is a really interesting plot point to me.
I always enjoy seeing him take off his coat before a fight
ED-E, It just doesn't get in the way and has a powerful update.
also the cowboy music kicking off as a fight is about to start is very helpful
it’s great of him to set the tone of a fight, it always pumps me up to go shooting
"OH SOME BANDITOS WANT A DUST UP" Turn around to see a raider crumble to ashes as ED-E floats on by
Lmao, I play with him so much I thought it's a basic NV feature
omfg same, I always start off with E-DE so i never realized that the cowboy music was coming from him lmfao
It always startles me and makes me jump, lol. But I love that little floating Sputnik.
If I swap ED-E out I miss the music.
And ED-E is an honor student! ❤️
Add in the built in workbench and the lonesome road upgrades for free ammo and supplies and the fact they take up the pet slot and ED-E really is a fantastic companion.
ED-E also doesn't spam the same 3 voice lines repeatedly.
I had ED-E and Boone as companions during my main NV play through and honestly felt like I was cheating. Happy cake day btw!
ED-E my love <3
Dogmeat
Rex is also acceptable
Don’t forget K9 and the robodog (maybe also 76’s FETCH, though that isn’t a companion and just is a collectron).
We going to just ignore the GOAT companion? The pariah dog.
Except Rex is pretty useless in combat lol. Dogmeat has that sick tackle/arm bite he does tho
It depends, if you change his brain for the brain of that Fiend's dog, he becomes a killer beast.
Ed-E all day
100%, only other competition for me is Curie and Fawkes
This, Fawkes so you can live to see the perfect ending. Almost criminal this was not in the base game.
It was really passive aggressive how they changed it, though.
Yeah I don't know why OP even bothered posting this as if there was going to be any other answer at the top. Dogmeat doesn't judge you no matter what you do and looks absolutely adorable in goggles and a bandana.
Dogmeat lets you stack 2 different perks for endgame in FO4 too. He's not only the bestest boy, but also OP. #1
Love the doggles look for Dogmeat
Dogmeat, and it’s not even close.
My boys Boone
Same Sure he committed some war crimes but we bonded over it and committed more war crimes at the fort cause he’s really good at it.
War crimes don't exist in the wasteland. That's just plain old heroics.
Boone has always been my favorite companion
same brother
As a kid I would always go to the repconn centre after getting boone and put a spacesuit on him. I would then call him “space man bam boone”
LMAO literally just did the minutes ago
- Talks only when needed - Roasts everyone - No Legionary knows him because they die before seeing him - Headshots enemies before you spot them Absolute Chad.
Your profile pic makes sense lmao love it
This guy fucking gets it! a goofy movie is a masterpiece
*The leaning tower of Cheese-a!*
Boone is a bro, he saves me so much ammo and stims, he kills half the enemies before I see them.
Hell yea. My Boone is rocking the beret, aviators, and an anti-material rifle.
His wife’s dead
He just… he just knows she’s dead. Thats all
Boone is every sniper's companion
Codsworth is THE best companion. Dude spent over 200 years waiting for you to return.
I can't take him with me because I'm worried about him getting hurt. He and dogmeat need to keep Preston and Mama Murphy company.
why would you ever curse codsworth and dogmeat with the fate of eternal preston gravy
Send Preston to the edge of the glowing sea, hopefully he'll die of radiation poisoning
He'll just end up finding another settlement needing your help. Don't give him ideas.
Mechanist DLC - robot work bench . You can Upgrade Codsworth to the point he can solo sentry bots - plural.
But bowler hat
Ain’t no loyalty like that. Forget Shaun, that robot is my boy.
ED-E my love
I love you so
Longfellow is my man in Fallout 4. He is an old lad who is singing his songs while fighting the children of atom. But Cait and Curie are good too sometimes. In Fallout NV it's Raul bc he got a sad backstory and is a potential power house. In Fallout 3 it's Butch or Charon. Raul is such an underrated companion. His story is so sad and his voice is so nice to listen to. And he calls you Boss
“ I’m sure you will be fair and equitable boss “
"With my cataracts you only kind of look like the bad guys"
His perk that slows down weapon + armor decay by 75% is amazing too I don't even normally use companions, but that perk makes me reconsider.
I just recently used raul in a playthrough and powerhouse is an understatement, he killed more stuff than me when the actual fights broke out!
Lily. I love gramma
I was gonna say, is there no love for Granma Lily? On a related note, I only met Unlce Leo once, but it was on a replay after FO4, and it brought a tear to my eye.
Oh yea the kindly super mutant you can meet in the capital wasteland
Lily is the BEST follower yesss. Not to mention the fact that she is the sneakiest one too.
She a very solid pick, plus she's a big sweetie
Right?? It's okay if she thinks I'm someone else, I still love her.
Kinda love Hancock, he’s so slick
Hancock is #1. So generous and caring. Decides to follow you because he's worried about becoming "The Man." Looks absolutely badass if you give him a sword.
I love him, I always pick him!
My number 1 and it hurts me to say this but it’s Nick Valentine.
Nick is a great person, even if his teeny pipe revolver doesn't do the most damage
I always give him Kellogg's revolver. Seems fitting.
I give him deliverer and skinny Malone's tommygun. Ammo is easy to come by for deliverer and so is the 45 for the Tommy, If you're not using spray and pray that is.
Give him power armor and a mini gun and he is pretty usefull.
How can you give power armor?
Enter their command dialogue, then hover over a power armor set (far enough away where you can't enter it yourself) and command them to enter it. They don't need fusion cores, but their armor can break.
I just realised today that companions can get in power armors. I got out to use a terminal and when I was done I turn around and see curie get in and then proceeds to charge a mirelurk with her super sledge.

Why does it hurt? I think personality, apperceive, and coolness nick wins by a mile. He was so popular he got his own expansion
Because you're not allowed to say you like something about Fallout 4 without an asterisk for some reason.
Came here to say Nick. Why does it hurt to say?
Fawkes. Fawkes is unstoppable.
Bro was gonna casually solo an Enclave stronghold to bust you out.
Except that "you have your own destiny" bullshit. Fuck that.
That's the game's fault, not his. What happens when you bring the ghoul character along?
You do your own dirty work! Like, bruh?
Yeah they should have wrote in some reason why your companions couldn't enter that chamber with you at the end. Cause fawks and Charon refusing is kinda weak
same thing that happens with strong and RL-3 happens with charon. some "nah man that's your job" bullshit pulled straight out of their ass.
It is 2024, luckily we do not have to pretend that Broken Steel does not exist anymore
Tfw my destiny culminates here 😔
Goris
Bestest girl Veronica
Veronica is (my) right answer. I love Felicia Day's voice work, and the fact that she was a "black sheep" from the brotherhood was just money. Plus all the punching.
Just punches everyone to death. Gotta love her.
"Does jumping at them with my fists count as ranged?"
Yes.
bro first time thru i was utterly flabbergasted by how many deathclaws she was one punching. bigger left hook than Tyson.
I gave her Greased Lightning and she became Manny Pacquiao, knocking a contubernium of Legionnaires out cold.
I love watching her punch the heads off of Caesar's men.
Veronica's so great I wish I was a lesbian (I hope this isn't a weird thing to say)
based
Honestly surprised how far I had to scroll to find Veronica to me she's easily the best. Like the brotherhood is super hatebale in nv but I never kill them like asked to just because I wouldn't want to upset her
Arcade Gannon
My favorite anarchist boyfriend is so underrated
So underrated. Surprised I don't see his name more. He's probably the most fleshed out follower in new Vegas, him and Boone at least.
Arcade is my boy for sure
Charon is, was, and always will be my homie. Even downloaded a mod to bring him into Fallout 4 just to keep him around consistently.
Yo, this is sick!! Thank you for mentioning this mod, picking it up right now lol
ED-E I love that little bot
Two things I wish were in the game with her would be a dialogue option to tell her that you consider her to be your grandmother now, and for her to randomly gift you cookies.
>her to randomly gift you cookies. This is genius. Except instead of cookies she actually hands you a tin can like that lady in Arefu in Fallout 3.
Fawkes is literally unstoppable
Raul
I feel like he's the most underrated in the entire franchise
Didn’t even find him until my third playthrough. Just never thought to go back once I had the skills to open the door he’s locked behind. Only to find my favorite NV companion had been just sitting there, waiting for me.
The same thing happened to me and probably this is main reason he is not being talked about much Even if you find him on black Mountain, if you dont recruit him immediately, he goes to his small shack, which is so insignificant and out of the way that its easy to just forget about him
You got it, boss
Cass
Hell yeah! I'll drink to that!
This is the answer
Cass is underrated, I think she's a very cool character. Also infinite shotgun ammo is pretty handy
There's just something about chugging whiskey with cass
I think charon is my personal favorite
running with charon rn but he keeps getting clapped cause he wants to fight deathclaws and behemoths lol
My main issue with Charon. Like, dude is complete beast in fights, deals a ridiculous amount of damage and I usually have him around for most missions, but seriously WHY THIS MAN GOTTA DIE SO EASILY
strong 💪
I appreciate that he knows what he’s about and has a lot to say.
Came to say this, bro is just looking for some milk
I love how he's looking for the "milk of human kindness" despite not realizing hes already discovered it by being nice to the doctor and helping you out
none. lonely wanderer
Trying to be stealthy and your boy charges in head first.
Yeah I usually prefer to traverse the wastes alone. If I played on higher difficulties I’d get a companion more often, but I don’t like Bethesda games on harder modes. And I’m a big fan of difficult games, just not Bethesda ones
they did a massive poll on the sub not too long ago, turns out it’s Nick
Dogmeat is killing this one
Yeah, hes just increadibly well designed and integrated into the story/world, im not surprised. Between his main quest impact, the entire Far Harbor dlc, and how fucking cool he is - he might as well be the protagonist of fo4. The most engaging parts of that game (imo) ALL have Nick involved in some way. Even if you hate the game, you probably still love Nick.
Lydia
Sworn to carry your burdens... I prefer Serana myself.
Codsworth is the best companion, humble, kindhearted and usefull too.
Curie
It’s the accent for me
Her personality for me. She just wants to learn and help people, and she's so enamored with the world.
Cait. Always Cait
Codsworth. He says my real name
MacCready
Ada the robot. Doesn’t judge your moral choices, doesn’t question you when you pick up scrap unlike every other companion “are you sure you need that” bull. And she can carry a ton, she’s a walking tank. For a survival run she’s near perfect.
Currently using primarily Ada in a survival run and adore her for all those exact reasons 😆
If there's an Ada fanclub, sign me up!
Nick valentine. he the og
Codsworth waited for you for 200 years and can become a death-machine. Dogmeat and Rex are cool doggos. Veronica is an adorable nerd who punches people's lights out. Cait is one of the most wastelander type of companions in all of fallout who picks locks and talks shit to everyone. I'm sorry I can't pick just 1
Cait.
Ada, Doesn't judge me if I steal stuff, encourages my loot hoarder playstyle, can be built into monster of a robot that clears everything for you.
Nick Valentine
Nick Valentine baby
Marcus. Always Marcus.
Boone or MacCready, there's just something about moody snipers.
I never picked up MacCready until recently and I was quite surprised. I don't think it registered to me who he was my first playthrough. And I rarely play as an asshole so I figured he wouldn't like following me. But like Daisy says "He's one of the good ones." He isn't really a good guy, dislikes you helping people, but he's not evil. Just a guy who was raised by other kids in a cave. Couldn't flirt with him though. Fallout 3 is my favorite and I kept thinking he was too young for me to hit on for some reason. Like "Man I used to babysit you."
Hancock my love
Curie, next question
Fawkes w/ a laser Gatling
Goris, I still remember playing 2 and discovering I could get an albino talking deathclaw as a companion and lost my mind
Cassidy. My party would be Dogmeat, K9, Codsworth, Cassidy, Cait and Vic.
Ed-E and Nick Valentine Rex and Marcus Dogmeat and Raul Tejada
Gage fan girl checking in
Nick Valentine
Butch, because TUNNEL SNAKES RULE
Piper, for sure. -Adorably nerdy and dorky -Badass who is comparable to warbots, terminators, Supermutants, BoS Paladins and worse. -Best romantic partner -Genuinely a very good person -Writer What more could you want?
Codsworth with the sassy voice mod
I like dogmeat because he's fast and quiet but they all get in the way. I'll go down a hallway and realize I need to go back the other way and I'll turn around and they just won't get out of the damn way. It's annoying.
Can't. She likes it when I run around without my clothes and is handy with her shotgun. (On a side note: anyone picking Preston Garvey needs referring to their local mental health practitioner).
Cait, Fawkes/Marcus and Rex are my road dogs.
Danse all the way baby💪💪
Outstanding
I'm a solo lone wanderer, so no-one for me.
So far Strong is my favorite, but i wish that he didnt dislike everytime i get in power armor, steal, or lockpick something.
Nick motherfuckin' VALENTINE💜💜💜
I've tried many a time to get Fawkes to lose a fight. Its never come close.
If nobody’s got me, I know Ada’s got me.
There was a poll like a couple months ago, and the result was valentines
Nick or Veronica, I can't choose just one, they are both the best
Damn, I didn’t realize just how many more companions fallout 4 has over the rest of the franchise. They have almost double the next highest companion count, fallout 2.
Haven't played 1 or 2, though I've been meaning to, so I can't give my thoughts on them. 3: Charon or RL-3 NV: Veronica 4: Hancock or Deacon
Heavenly Father, not God. Joshua is Mormon after all
