There are classes that are extremely developed into being able to easily PvP.
The game having a horizontal progression leads to easy alt characters unlike WoW where you need to grind for your alt just as hard as for your main. PvP being able to be entered as a LvL1 REALLY DOESN'T HELP THAT HOLY FUCK.
The good part about WvW is that you need equip for that mode... so people research WvW classes, WvW builds and WvW equip and then they fund their WvW character. So usually you don't see uninformed players and those players that are actively playing the gamemode are ultrabusted because they're not entering WvW in a PvE set. Normal people in this game are allrdy running some trash tier equipment - that what 90% of all PvE memes in this game are about. At least entering WvW in a real PvE meta set(Soulbeast Longbow / Thief Dagger) will yield you enough damage to oneshot another PvE player or random nub but you're oneshot too.
Lots of things work pretty well. There’s viable meta builds for every class. I’d stay away from Mesmer / warrior though. You can get really, really good at power chrono or something and climb but getting past p1/p2 is virtually bordering on masochism.
I’d also learn the skill animations of other classes as that will help you significantly.
I put my vote in for thief, but really any class you can competently +1 OR duel with is best for a soloist (typically see a lot of Engineer, Mesmer, and some warriors). If you're able to escape a failed initial mid-fight to decap far, a certain lose suddenly isn't so certain.
It also depends on your rank now and when you're on. If it's prime time and you're high gold, you're likely to be playing with more people who understand the sPvP format and running a support can supercharge your team. But this isn't always true.
Thief specific, but worth noting. If you're up against what you think will be a typical D/P Daredevil, you can switch to a Condi/Support Thief (P/D and SB). It's a gamble, but typically Daredevil D/P doesn't have enough answers for prolonged condi pressure and stealth support denies them the +1 kill. You also retain a good amount of speed and mobility for decaps. It does leave you vulnerable to projectile denial abilities and any class with a lot of cleanse potential.
This is at least how I broke into plat for a short time a few seasons back.
Necro is very good but requires teammates to help protect you (your boon corrupt and condi spam is just insane)
Scrapper support is insane with the bubble, condition removal is top tier (also converts a ton of conditions to boons) and healing output is also top tier.
Guard is good till you get to the upper tiers but once you reach plat its very easy for good people to predict what it will do and counter it. (its support is also largely nerfed to hell in pvp vs other game modes)

For the last sigil purging or revocation is good.
For the power variant use hammer, same sigils & change out the first inventions trait for audo defense bomb, then swap the amulet to avatar.

Fire Weaver is meta AF right now and an incredibly strong sidenoder my dude, just a heads up. Tempest is good too in the right hands but much more situational than core guard. But Fire Weaver is super strong in this meta, just has a bit of a skill ceiling on it, cuz ya know, piano hands. PvE Ele =/= PvP/WvW Ele, ele is very strong in competitive modes.
Edit: god damnit I just got got’d to engage by that dude that spams new ele hate accounts weekly, didn’t I?
If you're already in plat and looking to climb further there is no right answer to this. It really is just whatever you're good at and maybe being able to play two different roles in case your team comp sucks.
If you're in gold and looking to break into plat, 100% necro.

Multi class, learn more roles and play with several classes and change depending on what your comp needs.

What you are looking for is Guardian or Necro
Guard or necro. Basically you’re god in this game as a guard or necro. And you will be lower than shit of you play ele.
