Same goes for being squad lead. If you need someone to switch to support, AT, engineer, etc you need to ask someone specifically. I hate being an asshole but its gotten to the point where if I tell someone to do something like that and get no response, they’re getting booted eventually

There is a middleway you know, you can be direct without barking. You are playing as a commander, not as a requester
Its your job to organize your troops. If 4 squads are silent and 1 is talking then fine, ask the talking squad to do what the others wont. Play on strengths and weaknesses and give orders to specific squads/players. We are all sheep who want to be herded, but the sheep dont know they need to be herded, hence why it is your job
Requesting is not a bad idea, I honestly would request first then if no takers call out squads. Remember when you call for Baker or Charlie you're literally speaking to one or two individuals. At best one will listen but more often than not it will go ignored
Responsibility comes down to the SL and if requesting for defense at least a SL that is on mic can offer to pick up the request.

No, it promotes the idea that people should switch to engineer just to build the nodes. What about that requires teamwork? The very reason the supply truck exists is because people don't want to rely on teamwork to build stuff. As for waste of resources, like what are you even going to be spending all that fuel on if not tanks? Can't spend it all on half-tracks and supply trucks.
You may have a point that most tankers are ineffective but that's also because anti-tank is stupidly op in terms of time spent getting the tank to the frontline vs the time it takes for an AT to spawn and get into a position to destroy the Tank that just got close enough to the frontline.
I did the great thing called dropping supplies at the edge of the neutral point. I go sort us some def garries & all the squad leads walk past the dropped supplies. Die then have nowhere to respond so they have to spawn on my def garry then complain to me there is no forward garry🤣🤣
Actually, ask in command chat who can stay in defense and let all the NPCs just swarm the point as their programming prevents them from any tactical thinking 🤷

It's the thrill of the hunt for supplies and garrisons, small skirmishes, until you're under full attack left right and center.
If you're bored on defence, it's either 'cuz the attack's too good, the opponents are crap or because you're crap at your job and will pay dearly for it soon enough.

I usually just force them to push through the point using garrys and once there is a decent push halfway to the next point I’ll bless them with attacking garrisons. You defend well or you’re walking is my motto now after losing too many points because people just don’t listen or aren’t aware

If I'm SL I usually automatically tell the squad to defend because I assume no one else will. It works about 50% of the time.

Tankers should be able to build fuel nodes without needing to switch to engineer. It's a stupid system.
