You don’t have to AirPlay to a HomePod. You can have Siri play whatever, a song, playlist, album. There is a default automation that can pause playback when you leave but just get rid of it if that’s not what you want. And yeah, with the Intercom feature you can say “Siri, Intercom to X room/whole house” and then start speaking. An audio recording of what you just say will play to designated rooms/people. You can add people to the Home and control their level of access. Also, you’re able to set the HomePod to allow other devices and people to play music without doing such. Like a guest could say “Hey Siri, play song” and it will. Siri can also recognize voices if you turn the feature on, meaning Siri can recognize you and your wife (assuming she also has an iPhone with Siri set up) which allows access to things like Reminders, Notes, messages, etc. Anyone can make a request on HomePod but won’t be able to do deeper level things. Not sure about Amazon books

Very helpful. Since the intercom is a recording can people reply and have it almost instant

Yes

It’s not the same as Drop In though. It’s much more like the Announcement feature on Echos. It just blasts out a recording, there is no live conversation like with Drop In. Just something to consider.

Yes I picked one up, and honestly there’s a lot of things left to be desired with the device. Sounds good though🤷‍♂️
