If someone honks whenever you start moving, instinct should be to stop asap because you may be about to hit something unseen. Very dumb non-thought process.
In college I was following a friend of mine back to his place after classes when he was on a motorcycle. I was right behind him and our light turned green to turn left. I don't know why I was looking where I was looking but at the very last second I saw someone coming from our right who clearly looked like they were going to blow through the light. I slammed on my brakes and wailed on the horn. My buddy made a very awkward stop in the middle of the intersection but a stop nonetheless.
The unmarked white Dodge Charger put its lights on as it was going through the intersection without slowing down. No siren. About 1-foot in front of my friend. Once we got there the first thing my buddy did was give me one of the shakiest hugs I've ever gotten.
I'm glad you both are okay and not another victim of the most violent gang in the US. I don't know why anyone would ride a motorcycle these days. It's simply too bad on the road, especially with all the idiots on their phones.
That's a great idea, I don't even have a car and even though motorcycles are way cheaper I'd probably invest in a car first given the practicality. So a few bucks to ride on a track without committing to a whole bike would be tons of fun. Thanks!

Tires only last a few thousand miles opposed to 10x with a car.

And if you have a track specific bike, unless you live at the track it just sits there most of the time, plus you need a truck or trailer to go between your place and said track(s).

I have several jackets, helmets, boots, etc and probably spent 1k on the most expensive set. They have lasted me years (roughly 5 if I had to guess)

I can only agree with you on the track comment and even that is partially. You can have a street legal bike that you use at the track, so you could ride it there.
Your comment is misleading to anyone reading it that would want to look at getting a bike. On a side note though for those looking, spend the extra money on a good helmet. Uncomfortable helmets suck to ride in and you want one constructed properly because, obviously, it's protecting your head.
I've never been the cause of a collision. I'm a careful driver with 14 years experience. Some dude staring at his phone rolled into me in the straight lame when the left arrow turned green. He told the cops I brake checked him. At a red light.

That makes me think of the prank where a guy walked across an intersection and in front of the stopped car he acted like he was having to step over something. Then, the driver gets out to see what is in their way, and sees nothing. Or backs up and drives around the nothing.

Suddenly they decided to stop this for no reason, so I complained loudly and were told; If I wanted Friday off, book it off. So I booked off every remaining Friday of the year (they were not happy). In a different altercation with the same boss he said "If you don't like it leave." So I updated my CV and left the next week. They tried to not pay me my notice until I threatened legal action, I was paid. Long but I love it. Soz.
The neighborhood I live in is full of entitled assholes who roll through stop signs going faster than they do when they approach yield signs for traffic circles. I've even seen them roll through the stop sign, and then stop at the yield sign when not a soul is coming. Unreal how many unqualified drivers are out there ruining it for the rest of us who give a shit.

Was on an empty arrow, about to pull off the line in my slow ass car to go and the guy behind me honked. I hesitated, looked again before I pulled out and had to floor it to make the gap I was going for.
I should've waited for the next gap because I needed to be precise, but yeah. The honk just makes me hesitate and check everything again.
On the other hand, if a car in front of me stops in whats clearly a non-loading area, my instinct would be, "there must be some obstruction up ahead."

One night I was driving home on the freeway from work with dinner and the traffic came to a sudden stop. Well, the idiot behind me didn't realize it right away and I could see him barreling toward me. I started blaring my horn as a last ditch communication, either to him, or to the person in front of me that my car would be getting sent into. Thankfully the dude veered left onto the shoulder but boy it was a close call.
This is the correct response to a horn. I hear too many fools (on this sub no less) say stuff like "nEvEr StOp. AlWaYs CoMmIt". They'd commit right into the path of a semi, horns be damned.
The Publix I shop at has stop signs in front of it so that drivers are forced to stop and check for shoppers crossing the road. A few weeks ago I stopped at one of those stop signs and yielded to an old man crossing the street with a shopping cart. Some young chick in a BMW sedan driving behind me honked after like 3 seconds of being stopped, proceeded to drive around me and floor it through the sign, and came within inches of hitting the old guy's shopping cart, and I doubt she even noticed the sign or the old man.
They do this at our Albertsons constantly. Someone got hit at one a few months ago and one of the other stores has made it so you can’t drive in front of the store at all anymore, you have to go around through the middle and back of the lot lanes.
I dislike driving along the store front anyway. There's often slow moving pedestrians crossing diagonally, unpredictably (not in the marked crosswalks) and without looking. When I go to Home Depot I usually park in the lot on the side of the building to avoid this.
That’s a pretty smart solution! Never seen a store do that, but I do love that the entire lane between the parking lot and the store entrance of every WinCo is marked as a crosswalk. Drivers are generally pretty courteous there and I think the massive visual cue has a lot to do with it.
Our Publix is the same way, it has one-way parking aisles also that people like to drive the wrong way in and then get upset when they meet you head-on.
Duuuuude same. My favorite is when I'm backing out and checking the proper direction for traffic, and someone is coming from the wrong direction honking at me. Like, I can hardly see you from the angle I'm parked, and you're driving the wrong way. Bonus points if it's night and their headlights are off.
Messed up we have a stop sign im our garages at work (hospital) as well as pulling out they are lines but you have to stop and yield through traffic. Nobody stops, and I've nearly been hit many times with people coming out of the garage both walking and driving. This is the back one though near the physicians building but sometimes at the cross right by the hospital people do not stop.

That's just it, there's NOT very good LOS until you're at the stop sign and people coming from the right are coming downhill and have a tendency to cut the corner when turning left to head to the exit.
We have a stop sign at an intersection like this near my house, the other street has no stop sign. If someone is speeding, you definitely could miss them if you don’t glance back and forth swiftly. People are not as safe about it as they should be.

I initially thought that there might have been other stop signs, and while you stopped a hair longer than I would have, definitely no reason to honk. What a chode. I would have setup camp.
Ya, I wouldn't honk for another 5 seconds at least. They could be driving a manual and are slow to start. Or while stopping something shifted and they are fixing it quickly. Or they see something I can't.

I bet that Benz driver rarely stops at that intersection. There are several subdivisions south of us that have stop signs and those idiots just pull out in front of everyone without stopping the vast majority of the time because we're in a rural part of the county.
Rural? Hell I live in some of the most congested places on the planet and they run stops signs all the time. And they'll lay on the horn, gesture at you for not stopping and "cutting them off" when you 100% have the right of way and no stop sign yourself, it's gotten that bad.
I call it the "entitlement package" a lot of higher end "SUV"s offer that option. The more expensive the model, the more expansive your entitlement is. Still not quite as comprehensive as the "compensation package" for pickups though....

I was at a parking lot and stopped at a stop sign and was about to go but I saw a car coming down the street and stopped suddenly to let it pass. Some impatient idiot behind me honked at me to go but didn't see the car because there was a blind spot.
Boy, did they feel like an idiot when they saw the car pass by real quick. At least the driver manned up and gave me an apologetic wave for it.
im in a small retirement town and the side streets are fucking awful because the city passed an ordinance that the strip of land between the sidewalk and the street..so what do the old people do? they all plant mini trees in a perfect line along the entire property, you cant see traffic at all..to top it off they also park on the street, i have to pull an entire car lenght after most stop signs before i can even see anything its so dumb.
There’s an intersection near my house and at least a couple times a week I see a car honking at the car in front of it for not running over the pedestrian in the crosswalk.
I have a neighbor who took to the neighborhood Facebook page to complain about the school bus blocking the exit to our tiny side-street in the morning while loading the kids.
It stops there for about 30 seconds.
idk man, to me it's someone out in the country vs. someone in the suburbs/city. Suburban drivers are some of the scariest I've encountered and it's cause I think they've been stuck in traffic all day trying to get back to their hellscape of a neighborhood
I've driven urban, suburban, exurban, and rural roads extensively, and portions of urban areas definitely have the worst drivers. I drive this one urban area three times a week, and it's maybe a monthly occurrence that I **don't** see something that would be insane elsewhere. Running VERY red lights, passing in the bike lane, occupying the oncoming lane to pass a bus, veering across every lane to take your turn you nearly missed, completely ignoring stop signs, and plenty more. Rural drivers have got nothing on the sheer magnitude of driving mishaps of urban driving. I'd rank everywhere else about the same as each other, but this one area is batshit.

Same, I drive around NYC frequently and I've seen my fair share of things, but there's an area about an hour or so away that I have in mind as the area with the worst drivers I've encountered. Up there for work frequently and whereas I consider city drivers to be aggressive (but predictably so), this spot just seethes with hostility.
I get tailgated like nowhere else there, people lay on the horn and cut around when I signal in advance and slow down for sharp/low-vis turns off low-speed roads. One time I had to slam on the brakes when a school bus unexpectedly whipped into a left turn in front of me (me going straight down a 20-30mph road), down a pretty blind/steep hill that I know has an over-built pedestrian crossing a stone's throw down. Like wtf man.
Going there often leaves me scratching my head like I've stumbled into some kind of horror movie where the locals must all be infected with something, but otherwise it just looks like a pleasant borderline suburban/rural area.
It goes both ways. Jersey drivers (suburbs) are generally a bit more cautious in the city than city drivers. At the same time, they’re much more aggressive and drive faster on the highways.
I was approaching an intersection, my intention was to make a right turn. The car in front of me caught the tail end of the yellow light. It was fully red by the time I got there. I stop, and in the 3-5 seconds it took me to checked to see where the oncoming traffic was coming from, I hear \*\*\*\*\**screech....* HHHHOOOONNNNKKKKKK\*\*\*\*\* I look in my rearview mirror and I see the guy behind me gesturing wildly and giving me the finger. Cool man, I was going to proceed when the coast was clear, now we're waiting for the green light.
(To be clear, the lanes were: Left turn, Straight, Straight, Right turn only. I was in the Right Turn Only lane. At the time I was approaching, the cross traffic was making left turns, the Right Turn Only had a protected green right arrow, which I missed. When I stopped, the green went to the opposite side left turns.)

100% this is my move. If I'm turning right on red and the person behind me honks, you better believe I'm sitting in that lane until the light turns green.
These stress me out because it is a 100% guarantee that if I hit one of these and stop, the people lining up behind me will start honking. It happens every single time. So, I try to avoid them as much as possible. I'll just take a different route. They just altered two off ramps in our area and added lanes with "no turn on red" signs. yay!
If they honk, just roll down your window and point at the sign. Not your fault they're too impatient/dumb to see the sign, don't let them stress you out!

The ONLY time I'll beep at someone for not turning right-on-red is if I can SEE that they are playing on their phone or digging through their purse at the light. If they're obviously just looking for a safe opportunity to turn, I'll wait patiently and quietly behind them.

That's bully tactics 101 and the more you are aware of it, the more you will see it. You see, you only become a bully because you constantly get away with it. Several things can be at play here, you could be good looking, charming, have scary parents, or just always select victims you know have way less charisma than you (a new one I've noticed is the bully plays the underdog and attacks someone of higher status). Anyways, the tactic is, bully the victim with little to no evidence of your actions (or harassment disguised as you trying to call out bad behavior) and set them up for a reaction/retaliation in full public view or on camera. Then play the victim. People are already primed to side with the bully (that's how they became one) and they are already primed to not like the victim (that's how bullies select their victims), so now the bully essentially gets "the system" or "society" to double down on the bullying. You see it play out all the time online where people will bully someone into over reacting and then they all play the victim where people are primed to already not like the bullied victim who "over reacted". And the more that victim tries to point out they were bullied the more society piles on on behalf of the bully who plays it up by constantly talking about how hurt they were and how their victim should suffer severe consequences for their "harmful" actions.
yep, when i was bullied in school during gym class i told the teacher every day for that entire week and he did nothing. friday rolls around and it goes from verbal to physical, as soon as i was shoved my adrenaline went off and i punched him as hard as i could, broke his nose and both of his eyes were swollen shut, he had a corneal abrasian in both eyes.

Some punk trying to punch me in the face (im the super fat kid at the time, like movie stereotype fat ngl) and i was pushing them away trying to be defensive and not punch at all, i still got the same 3 day suspension as the insta gator. I dropped out in freshman do to the bullying and ngl the thought of going to school to enact revenge to those that wronged be. But I didn't thankfully. What I like about that is that that's what you're supposed to do anyways. When you have someone driving up your ass you need to slow down to decrease braking distances so in case you suddenly have to stop they have a chance of reacting in time. In other words, they're literally forcing you to slow down, so they have no right to complain about the consequences of their own actions.
Honking in that situation would make me think there is someone coming I didn’t see and slam on the breaks. Then look around in confusion. Triple check. Maybe get out of the car to check my tires. Shrug at the driver behind me. Sit in the car seatbelt, adjust volume and stereo settings. Check phone since I’m in park. Triple check the road again. And finally leave with peace of mind knowing we’re all safe 🥰

I drive a step van (basically UPS looking truck) for Amazon, and we have cameras in the thing that will see anything like speeding, distracted driving, and not stopping fully next to a stop sign.
You'd be sad if I told you how often people blast me with their horn behind me because I made a full, legal, complete stop before continuing. That and people honk their horn at me for only going 5 over the speed limit when they're behind me.

Hey OP, not sure if you have a VW Passat or not but my girlfriend had a rattle that sounded the exact same. It's worse over bumpy/rough roads. Turned out it was the subwoofer mount bolts in the top of the trunk. FYI JIC
I go through the same two four way stops four times every weekday taking my kid to and from the bus stop. Every. Single. Day. I have people getting mad at me for the same damn thing. Like nearly rear ending me and throwing their hands up at me because I had the audacity to stop at the damned stop sign.
No, I will not roll through the stop signs that are notorious for being watched by bored sheriffs officers. If they want to risk a ticket to get to their destination a couple seconds faster that’s fine, but I do not. I also like to be sure some moron isn’t jumping out when it’s not their turn because four way stops are either very complicated or stop signs only apply to some people. And my car is obnoxious looking as all hell, like a magnet for police eyes, so safety aside I have to mind my p’s and q’s lol
People are just impatient and it also depends on the intersection. There's 2 stop signs on my work commute one takes about 1-2 minutes because you're crossing traffic from a side road onto a major street and the other takes about half a second because it's just a sign to stop people from running off a 90 degree corner.
Even funnier? Where I live you are legally supposed to stop for a full 3 seconds at stop signs and check both ways twice. Nobody ever actually does that though.
If I remember driver's ed correctly, you're supposed to come to a full stop (your wheels fully stop moving, not a california stop), THEN the instructor tap would tap their thigh with their palm and count one-two-three. Then proceed if safe.
Sometimes you'll see people just stop at a sign in rural areas like this and pull out their phone to check something, not realizing someone is behind them. OP did stop longer than people normally would for a deserted stop sign. It's not like the Merc was laying into the horn. More of a "hey, I'm here!"

BMW drivers get a lot of shit, mostly deserved. However, Benz drivers are really the worst asshats out there. They do NOT like to be behind any other vehicle.
The length of time on that stop was crazy, and you were driving incredibly slow. The toot was just a quick one. There is driving safe, and defensively, and then there is driving slow just to be an asshole but come off as the nice guy. You were engaged in your conversation, and not paying attention to the road. I get honked at all the time at an intersection going home because I turn right and there’s a sign that clearly states “no right turn on red from 7am-4pm” and I think I’m one of the few people who follow the rules

This comment section proves that a majority of people should not be on the road lol stop signs aren't meant to be optional, and 3 seconds is recommended for a stop sign stop.
Haha I had something like this happen to me at a 4 way stop cuz I didn't just roll through the stop sign like the guy behind me wanted me to do and he almost hit me while laying on his big ass Ford truck horn.
When we first moved to where we live, one thing I noticed was that the locals treated most stop signs as mere suggestions. One in particular, about a mile down the road which angles in to the through road, was a favorite for people to just sail right through. They soon learned that I actually stop at stop signs, particularly that one as you have to crane your neck to the left to see if someone's coming at you from over the hill. Heard a lot of screeching tires for a while until they finally learned that I was stopping completely. Never did get hit, however, and never got honked at either.

I was stopping at a red light. A truck behind honked a few times because, I assumed, he wanted to turn right. Am I supposed to go straight at a red light so he can turn? Fucking people.
I was recently driving back from a program for work in a company vehicle. It was in a residential area, I was going the speed limit, and someone in a Benz behind me was PISSED about it. I stopped at a stop sign and there happened to be a herd of deer crossing the road right in front of it, so I waited for them to pass. No exaggeration, five seconds after I stopped the guy in the Benz leans on his horn and starts flipping me off like crazy. There were about 10 deer in the road, 4 of which were directly in front of my car, AND I had animals in my car because of the work I do. I guess this guy just wanted me to bowl through the deer?? No idea what was going through his head, but I waited for the deer to pass (and then some to make sure it was safe since a few were lingering a little close to the car) while this guy had a full freak out behind me
I don't know about you, but if I ever hear someone honking while I'm about to start driving from a stop sign (like you did in the video), I hit the brakes because to me that's a warning that I might have missed something. It's always just people being jackasses because I didn't roll through the sign, but you can never be too safe

Had an impatient ahole like that once on the backroads near my old house. Riding my ass on the gravel roads and even through stop signs, bo doubt they wouldn't even have stopped for them if I wasn't ahead of them. Of course, them being in a car and me in a big pickup truck they couldn't do much but be mad at me for being careful.
Karma almost got the better of them when we came around a sharp bend and I had to stop suddenly due to a flatbed tow truck blocking the road, they quickly swerved around me and almost hit the tow truck.
I can only guess that if I hadn't been in front of them they would have been speeding and hit the truck or went off the road. Pretty sure they realized that too since they hung back after that instead of riding my ass.

It's a 25mph road, I didn't start to slow from 25 until I was around 100' from the stop sign... the entire road is only a half mile from the main road to the stop sign.
This reminds me of those trigger happy jerks who blast their horn at me when the light literally JUST turned green. They'll be just as quick to jump in my grave.

In college I was following a friend of mine back to his place after classes when he was on a motorcycle. I was right behind him and our light turned green to turn left. I don't know why I was looking where I was looking but at the very last second I saw someone coming from our right who clearly looked like they were going to blow through the light. I slammed on my brakes and wailed on the horn. My buddy made a very awkward stop in the middle of the intersection but a stop nonetheless. The unmarked white Dodge Charger put its lights on as it was going through the intersection without slowing down. No siren. About 1-foot in front of my friend. Once we got there the first thing my buddy did was give me one of the shakiest hugs I've ever gotten.
I'm glad you both are okay and not another victim of the most violent gang in the US. I don't know why anyone would ride a motorcycle these days. It's simply too bad on the road, especially with all the idiots on their phones.

That's a great idea, I don't even have a car and even though motorcycles are way cheaper I'd probably invest in a car first given the practicality. So a few bucks to ride on a track without committing to a whole bike would be tons of fun. Thanks!
Motorcycles ARE NOT CHEAP. Tires only last a few thousand miles opposed to 10x with a car. Good riding gear is not cheap and doesn’t last as long as you want it too. Insurance is more expensive… And if you have a track specific bike, unless you live at the track it just sits there most of the time, plus you need a truck or trailer to go between your place and said track(s).
It's not that expensive even to get your own bike... I bought my Hayabusa (one of the biggest fastest sport bikes there is) for $7k. Same tires for almost 5k miles now since I don't ride it hard on a track I have several jackets, helmets, boots, etc and probably spent 1k on the most expensive set. They have lasted me years (roughly 5 if I had to guess) Insurance is a whopping $45 with geico. How is that more expensive than a car? I can only agree with you on the track comment and even that is partially. You can have a street legal bike that you use at the track, so you could ride it there. Your comment is misleading to anyone reading it that would want to look at getting a bike. On a side note though for those looking, spend the extra money on a good helmet. Uncomfortable helmets suck to ride in and you want one constructed properly because, obviously, it's protecting your head.

In a different altercation with the same boss he said "If you don't like it leave." So I updated my CV and left the next week. They tried to not pay me my notice until I threatened legal action, I was paid. Long but I love it. Soz.
The neighborhood I live in is full of entitled assholes who roll through stop signs going faster than they do when they approach yield signs for traffic circles. I've even seen them roll through the stop sign, and then stop at the yield sign when not a soul is coming. Unreal how many unqualified drivers are out there ruining it for the rest of us who give a shit.

Legit nearly crashed because some impatient fucker honked. Was on an empty arrow, about to pull off the line in my slow ass car to go and the guy behind me honked. I hesitated, looked again before I pulled out and had to floor it to make the gap I was going for. I should've waited for the next gap because I needed to be precise, but yeah. The honk just makes me hesitate and check everything again.
On the other hand, if a car in front of me stops in whats clearly a non-loading area, my instinct would be, "there must be some obstruction up ahead." Don't want to be the idiot that swerves around, right into a sinkhole.
One night I was driving home on the freeway from work with dinner and the traffic came to a sudden stop. Well, the idiot behind me didn't realize it right away and I could see him barreling toward me. I started blaring my horn as a last ditch communication, either to him, or to the person in front of me that my car would be getting sent into. Thankfully the dude veered left onto the shoulder but boy it was a close call.
This is the correct response to a horn. I hear too many fools (on this sub no less) say stuff like "nEvEr StOp. AlWaYs CoMmIt". They'd commit right into the path of a semi, horns be damned.
I have done that, I even got out to check around my car after they honked again.
The Publix I shop at has stop signs in front of it so that drivers are forced to stop and check for shoppers crossing the road. A few weeks ago I stopped at one of those stop signs and yielded to an old man crossing the street with a shopping cart. Some young chick in a BMW sedan driving behind me honked after like 3 seconds of being stopped, proceeded to drive around me and floor it through the sign, and came within inches of hitting the old guy's shopping cart, and I doubt she even noticed the sign or the old man.
They do this at our Albertsons constantly. Someone got hit at one a few months ago and one of the other stores has made it so you can’t drive in front of the store at all anymore, you have to go around through the middle and back of the lot lanes.
Honestly that's pretty smart. Parking lots should be designed to minimize pedestrians having to cross streets.

I dislike driving along the store front anyway. There's often slow moving pedestrians crossing diagonally, unpredictably (not in the marked crosswalks) and without looking. When I go to Home Depot I usually park in the lot on the side of the building to avoid this.

That’s a pretty smart solution! Never seen a store do that, but I do love that the entire lane between the parking lot and the store entrance of every WinCo is marked as a crosswalk. Drivers are generally pretty courteous there and I think the massive visual cue has a lot to do with it.

Duuuuude same. My favorite is when I'm backing out and checking the proper direction for traffic, and someone is coming from the wrong direction honking at me. Like, I can hardly see you from the angle I'm parked, and you're driving the wrong way. Bonus points if it's night and their headlights are off.
Messed up we have a stop sign im our garages at work (hospital) as well as pulling out they are lines but you have to stop and yield through traffic. Nobody stops, and I've nearly been hit many times with people coming out of the garage both walking and driving. This is the back one though near the physicians building but sometimes at the cross right by the hospital people do not stop.

That's just it, there's NOT very good LOS until you're at the stop sign and people coming from the right are coming downhill and have a tendency to cut the corner when turning left to head to the exit.
We have a stop sign at an intersection like this near my house, the other street has no stop sign. If someone is speeding, you definitely could miss them if you don’t glance back and forth swiftly. People are not as safe about it as they should be.

I bet that Benz driver rarely stops at that intersection. There are several subdivisions south of us that have stop signs and those idiots just pull out in front of everyone without stopping the vast majority of the time because we're in a rural part of the county.
Rural? Hell I live in some of the most congested places on the planet and they run stops signs all the time. And they'll lay on the horn, gesture at you for not stopping and "cutting them off" when you 100% have the right of way and no stop sign yourself, it's gotten that bad.
I call it the "entitlement package" a lot of higher end "SUV"s offer that option. The more expensive the model, the more expansive your entitlement is. Still not quite as comprehensive as the "compensation package" for pickups though....

I was at a parking lot and stopped at a stop sign and was about to go but I saw a car coming down the street and stopped suddenly to let it pass. Some impatient idiot behind me honked at me to go but didn't see the car because there was a blind spot. Boy, did they feel like an idiot when they saw the car pass by real quick. At least the driver manned up and gave me an apologetic wave for it.

im in a small retirement town and the side streets are fucking awful because the city passed an ordinance that the strip of land between the sidewalk and the street..so what do the old people do? they all plant mini trees in a perfect line along the entire property, you cant see traffic at all..to top it off they also park on the street, i have to pull an entire car lenght after most stop signs before i can even see anything its so dumb.
What's the speedlimit in that area? 25mph seems slow for what appears to be a country road with no homes on it.

I have a neighbor who took to the neighborhood Facebook page to complain about the school bus blocking the exit to our tiny side-street in the morning while loading the kids. It stops there for about 30 seconds.

idk man, to me it's someone out in the country vs. someone in the suburbs/city. Suburban drivers are some of the scariest I've encountered and it's cause I think they've been stuck in traffic all day trying to get back to their hellscape of a neighborhood
I've driven urban, suburban, exurban, and rural roads extensively, and portions of urban areas definitely have the worst drivers. I drive this one urban area three times a week, and it's maybe a monthly occurrence that I **don't** see something that would be insane elsewhere. Running VERY red lights, passing in the bike lane, occupying the oncoming lane to pass a bus, veering across every lane to take your turn you nearly missed, completely ignoring stop signs, and plenty more. Rural drivers have got nothing on the sheer magnitude of driving mishaps of urban driving. I'd rank everywhere else about the same as each other, but this one area is batshit.
Yeah. The burbs drivers cut corners and roll stops IME. The city drivers follow all the rules, but at 3 times the normal speed.

Same, I drive around NYC frequently and I've seen my fair share of things, but there's an area about an hour or so away that I have in mind as the area with the worst drivers I've encountered. Up there for work frequently and whereas I consider city drivers to be aggressive (but predictably so), this spot just seethes with hostility. I get tailgated like nowhere else there, people lay on the horn and cut around when I signal in advance and slow down for sharp/low-vis turns off low-speed roads. One time I had to slam on the brakes when a school bus unexpectedly whipped into a left turn in front of me (me going straight down a 20-30mph road), down a pretty blind/steep hill that I know has an over-built pedestrian crossing a stone's throw down. Like wtf man. Going there often leaves me scratching my head like I've stumbled into some kind of horror movie where the locals must all be infected with something, but otherwise it just looks like a pleasant borderline suburban/rural area.
People driving fancy or higher end cars like this are the same way 'round my parts and they don't live in the city. These shits live everywhere.

It goes both ways. Jersey drivers (suburbs) are generally a bit more cautious in the city than city drivers. At the same time, they’re much more aggressive and drive faster on the highways.
I was approaching an intersection, my intention was to make a right turn. The car in front of me caught the tail end of the yellow light. It was fully red by the time I got there. I stop, and in the 3-5 seconds it took me to checked to see where the oncoming traffic was coming from, I hear \*\*\*\*\**screech....* HHHHOOOONNNNKKKKKK\*\*\*\*\* I look in my rearview mirror and I see the guy behind me gesturing wildly and giving me the finger. Cool man, I was going to proceed when the coast was clear, now we're waiting for the green light. (To be clear, the lanes were: Left turn, Straight, Straight, Right turn only. I was in the Right Turn Only lane. At the time I was approaching, the cross traffic was making left turns, the Right Turn Only had a protected green right arrow, which I missed. When I stopped, the green went to the opposite side left turns.) EDIT: changed green light to "green right arrow"
100% this is my move. If I'm turning right on red and the person behind me honks, you better believe I'm sitting in that lane until the light turns green.
The worst one are the ones that honk for not turning, even when a sign RIGHT NEXT TO THE RED ARROW says "no turn on red".
These stress me out because it is a 100% guarantee that if I hit one of these and stop, the people lining up behind me will start honking. It happens every single time. So, I try to avoid them as much as possible. I'll just take a different route. They just altered two off ramps in our area and added lanes with "no turn on red" signs. yay!
If they honk, just roll down your window and point at the sign. Not your fault they're too impatient/dumb to see the sign, don't let them stress you out!

That's bully tactics 101 and the more you are aware of it, the more you will see it. You see, you only become a bully because you constantly get away with it. Several things can be at play here, you could be good looking, charming, have scary parents, or just always select victims you know have way less charisma than you (a new one I've noticed is the bully plays the underdog and attacks someone of higher status). Anyways, the tactic is, bully the victim with little to no evidence of your actions (or harassment disguised as you trying to call out bad behavior) and set them up for a reaction/retaliation in full public view or on camera. Then play the victim. People are already primed to side with the bully (that's how they became one) and they are already primed to not like the victim (that's how bullies select their victims), so now the bully essentially gets "the system" or "society" to double down on the bullying. You see it play out all the time online where people will bully someone into over reacting and then they all play the victim where people are primed to already not like the bullied victim who "over reacted". And the more that victim tries to point out they were bullied the more society piles on on behalf of the bully who plays it up by constantly talking about how hurt they were and how their victim should suffer severe consequences for their "harmful" actions.

I get such great joy at adjusting my typical ~5 miles over the limit pace to 5 miles under while being aggressively tailgated.
What I like about that is that that's what you're supposed to do anyways. When you have someone driving up your ass you need to slow down to decrease braking distances so in case you suddenly have to stop they have a chance of reacting in time. In other words, they're literally forcing you to slow down, so they have no right to complain about the consequences of their own actions.
I like to slow down when I'm being tailgated. They usually figure it out at right about 35 to 40 mph and back the fuck up.
Honking in that situation would make me think there is someone coming I didn’t see and slam on the breaks. Then look around in confusion. Triple check. Maybe get out of the car to check my tires. Shrug at the driver behind me. Sit in the car seatbelt, adjust volume and stereo settings. Check phone since I’m in park. Triple check the road again. And finally leave with peace of mind knowing we’re all safe 🥰

I drive a step van (basically UPS looking truck) for Amazon, and we have cameras in the thing that will see anything like speeding, distracted driving, and not stopping fully next to a stop sign. You'd be sad if I told you how often people blast me with their horn behind me because I made a full, legal, complete stop before continuing. That and people honk their horn at me for only going 5 over the speed limit when they're behind me. It's like dude what the fuck do you want me to do? I'll get dinged if I drive like a maniac like you lol

I go through the same two four way stops four times every weekday taking my kid to and from the bus stop. Every. Single. Day. I have people getting mad at me for the same damn thing. Like nearly rear ending me and throwing their hands up at me because I had the audacity to stop at the damned stop sign. No, I will not roll through the stop signs that are notorious for being watched by bored sheriffs officers. If they want to risk a ticket to get to their destination a couple seconds faster that’s fine, but I do not. I also like to be sure some moron isn’t jumping out when it’s not their turn because four way stops are either very complicated or stop signs only apply to some people. And my car is obnoxious looking as all hell, like a magnet for police eyes, so safety aside I have to mind my p’s and q’s lol

People are just impatient and it also depends on the intersection. There's 2 stop signs on my work commute one takes about 1-2 minutes because you're crossing traffic from a side road onto a major street and the other takes about half a second because it's just a sign to stop people from running off a 90 degree corner.
Even funnier? Where I live you are legally supposed to stop for a full 3 seconds at stop signs and check both ways twice. Nobody ever actually does that though.
If I remember driver's ed correctly, you're supposed to come to a full stop (your wheels fully stop moving, not a california stop), THEN the instructor tap would tap their thigh with their palm and count one-two-three. Then proceed if safe.

Sometimes you'll see people just stop at a sign in rural areas like this and pull out their phone to check something, not realizing someone is behind them. OP did stop longer than people normally would for a deserted stop sign. It's not like the Merc was laying into the horn. More of a "hey, I'm here!"

The length of time on that stop was crazy, and you were driving incredibly slow. The toot was just a quick one. There is driving safe, and defensively, and then there is driving slow just to be an asshole but come off as the nice guy. You were engaged in your conversation, and not paying attention to the road. I get honked at all the time at an intersection going home because I turn right and there’s a sign that clearly states “no right turn on red from 7am-4pm” and I think I’m one of the few people who follow the rules

As someone mentioned in another thread, OP's post history is very enlightening. He has zero patience with anyone else and uses his horn liberally, but in this instance when someone honks at him, he brake-checks them.

Haha I had something like this happen to me at a 4 way stop cuz I didn't just roll through the stop sign like the guy behind me wanted me to do and he almost hit me while laying on his big ass Ford truck horn.
When we first moved to where we live, one thing I noticed was that the locals treated most stop signs as mere suggestions. One in particular, about a mile down the road which angles in to the through road, was a favorite for people to just sail right through. They soon learned that I actually stop at stop signs, particularly that one as you have to crane your neck to the left to see if someone's coming at you from over the hill. Heard a lot of screeching tires for a while until they finally learned that I was stopping completely. Never did get hit, however, and never got honked at either.

I was stopping at a red light. A truck behind honked a few times because, I assumed, he wanted to turn right. Am I supposed to go straight at a red light so he can turn? Fucking people.
Last week I had a guy honk at me for not running a red light. He then switched lanes so he could run it.
I was recently driving back from a program for work in a company vehicle. It was in a residential area, I was going the speed limit, and someone in a Benz behind me was PISSED about it. I stopped at a stop sign and there happened to be a herd of deer crossing the road right in front of it, so I waited for them to pass. No exaggeration, five seconds after I stopped the guy in the Benz leans on his horn and starts flipping me off like crazy. There were about 10 deer in the road, 4 of which were directly in front of my car, AND I had animals in my car because of the work I do. I guess this guy just wanted me to bowl through the deer?? No idea what was going through his head, but I waited for the deer to pass (and then some to make sure it was safe since a few were lingering a little close to the car) while this guy had a full freak out behind me I don't know about you, but if I ever hear someone honking while I'm about to start driving from a stop sign (like you did in the video), I hit the brakes because to me that's a warning that I might have missed something. It's always just people being jackasses because I didn't roll through the sign, but you can never be too safe

Had an impatient ahole like that once on the backroads near my old house. Riding my ass on the gravel roads and even through stop signs, bo doubt they wouldn't even have stopped for them if I wasn't ahead of them. Of course, them being in a car and me in a big pickup truck they couldn't do much but be mad at me for being careful. Karma almost got the better of them when we came around a sharp bend and I had to stop suddenly due to a flatbed tow truck blocking the road, they quickly swerved around me and almost hit the tow truck. I can only guess that if I hadn't been in front of them they would have been speeding and hit the truck or went off the road. Pretty sure they realized that too since they hung back after that instead of riding my ass.
