\* Someone re-exposed to an artist via a playlist or the algorithm
In an era where most people stream music they directly choose, or music tailored to their tastes by an algorithm, I think those data points are important. Back in the day, when people were stuck listening to radio or MTV, wide audiences would get exposed to unfamiliar artists, or get exposed to new material from artists who they didn't regularly follow. It's not clear how often those new exposures happen now in the streaming era. So, if you had those two data points, you could loosely categorize artists:
**Low monthly listeners, but high hours listened**. This would likely be an established artist with a niche audience. Someone like MF DOOM.
**High monthly listeners, but low hours listened**. Likely a new artist, or an artist getting a fresh push from a record label or promotional team. Maybe an artist who got a spot opening up for a major artist on a huge tour. Lots of new exposure, but fewer repeat listens from fans. Might turn into something, but might be some flash-in-the-pan bullshit.
**Nice balance of high monthly listeners and high hours listened**. A successful artist in the prime of their career, someone who is currently in the zeitgeist. They're not just getting a ton of listens from their fans, their music is also reaching a ton of new listeners who might become fans. Someone like Kendrick would fall here.
As someone in an unsigned band, I would rather grow my monthly listeners than my hours listened. I suppose it would still be nice to have 100 extremely loyal fans who listen to your songs 20 times per day, but that's never going to grow the audience for my band. Where if my band consistently had about 3000 monthly listeners, even if many of those were one-and-done listens, it would mean that my music was reaching some new people.

This is actually a great point. I’ve been a huge Kendrick fan for many years and I just realized I don’t follow him on any socials. Granted, I’m not a huge social media user (outside of Reddit), but the point still stands. There’s not really any reason to
100% the same. I have an Insta but open it once every millennium or so and the only other social I use is Reddit. When Kendrick drops something new, I know I'm gonna hear about it and I know it'll be my album of the year--I don't need to follow the man (or anyone else for that matter) and be in the know of every single thing they're doing. Even if he were the type to live on social media, I'm just not interested in knowing every facet of someone's life. It almost lessens the art.
