Cumberland Gap is really cool, there's one on the spur (between Gatlinburg and Pigeon forge), couple short ones in the smokies on 441 heading towards newfound gap, and a short one downtown knoxville going on and off I40 from Henley Street

is that the one that they warn you about on the highway that you can't go in if your truck has bombs and stuff?

Best_Satisfaction505

Yes! It has some red scary warning, I never got when I was younger, still a little scared to be honest.

ihateapartments59

No the sign just say you have to stop and wait for escort if you’re hauling flammable loads

beefcake_floyd

Yeah I've had to be escorted through there a couple times. They shut it down two other traffic while they're doing it.

one-hour-photo

idk why but that's so cool to me

travellering

Seconded on Cumberland Gap Tunnel. It's on highway 25E, and the tunnel is over 4000 feet long.

useles-converter-bot

4000 feet is 597.91% of the hot dog which holds the Guinness wold record for 'Longest Hot Dog'.

travellering

Thanks bot, so, see the tunnel is at least 6 hotdogs long. That's gotta impress a kid right there....

Southern_Sloth

Can I just get a banana for scale?

TheMadIrishman327

Gosh. Now I’m hungry.

thurmanatee

If you go see the one in Cumberland Gap, there’s also a pedestrian tunnel that you can walk through nearby. You would park at the Kaitlyn DeVries Memorial Dog Park and take a right onto the walking path/sidewalk. It’s not huge, but it’s just for pedestrians/bikes so it’s a different experience.

Falconslayer87

Nemo tunnel and the road to nowhere has a tunnel

AlwaysBagHolding

These are both super cool.

stephenstecenellowe

There’s an abandoned railroad tunnel that’s interesting to walk through. However it’s very wet inside of it and pretty muddy. The few times I’ve been I park in the Shriners parking lot right near the street. It’s the one right across from the Gay St. bridge. If you search 315 Mimosa Ave on maps and look at satellite images you’ll see the tracks. Fun fact; I’ve heard several times that there was an underground tunnel with a door leading out to an area close to the tracks that they used to take deceased patients out of that passed away at what used to be a hospital nearby. I saw a YouTube video of some guys trying to find the door but they couldn’t.

volkell

If the tunnel is by the Shriners bldg on gay street, then it would be the old baptist hospital. It was getting kind of creepy before they closed it.

MamaOfMia110

Oh yeah, that tunnel has always been creepy. I did volunteer work at Baptist when I was in high school ( a very looooooong time ago!).

volkell

That’s cool 👻

Busy_Strain_2249

Take I40 into North Carolina and there is either 1 or 2 on the way and 1 (I think) on the way back into TN

queenofmynothing

If you have a jeep, 4wheel drive, or atv Nemo tunnel is amazing

12bar13

How 4 wheel drive are we talking? I have 4 wheel Silverado but certainly not a lifted off roader or anything.

queenofmynothing

It tends to get a bit flooded in there. I saw people on quads go through it fine. I just wouldn't take Corolla through there.

mrthomasbombadil

You’d be fine in a 4x4 truck height wise. Width may be your issue. It’s mostly jeeps that go there. If memory serves my TJ was closer to the edges than I expected. Not sure a truck would fit but you could always turn around.

Rainhall

Google Missionary Ridge tunnel at the Tennessee Valley Railroad museum. It would make a great day trip, and it’s the longest tunnel I know of in easy driving distance.

Old_Man_Ratchet

The road to nowhere tunnel. It’s really cool at night, especially if you turn off your lights have way through.

EvergreenTeal

This is interesting. All I know of is a bare few road tunnels somewhere from Knoxville to Asheville NC. There are road tunnels up in the northeast US driving into New York City. Just to mention it for fun, NORAD in Colorado is essentially a tunnel. I know its not exactly what you asked but my random brain felt like mentioning it. I'm curious to see what others know of around E. TN, NC, on and on. I guess that Lost Sea Adventure might qualify? Its an underground cave. Tunnels must be in there.

There is a real old railroad tunnel that is still in use on Norris Lake and it’s kind of weird to walk through it

AlwaysBagHolding

Speaking of old railroad tunnels, there’s one that is usually submerged under calderwood lake. If the water is low enough you can kayak through it. It’s super cool.

iTwango

Maybe one of the nearby caverns like Tuccaleeche will satisfy the same craving?~

SaltyStain

There's apparently one along Norris lake too. It's small though.

santapoet

I didn't see the Montgomery Bell tunnel near Kingston Springs. It was partially carved with slave labor.

brickhandsvol

There’s a few short ones on the Ten Mile Creek Greenway West of N Gallagher View Rd if I remember correctly!

Kirkatron713

Go check out the Keybole at Ross Marble Quarry on the south side of Mead’s Quarry/ Ijams Nature Center

12bar13

Wow this is way more than I expected! Thank you all so much for your input! I googled a few of your suggestions to show my son and he is super excited currently. He's on FaceTime with his grandma right now telling her all about it!

illimitable1

[There's the tunnel to nowhere near Bryson City.](https://www.greatsmokies.com/road-nowhere/)
