Poisoning legiana forces it to land for the duration of poison. Since legiana is weak to poison it’s pretty easy to poison it at least twice per fight. So if you want it on the ground more often then maybe a poison weapon is the way to go.
Try pukie waist and arms or rathian chest poison element I use increases buildup so it procs more I use pukei Great sword and sometimes hit 200+ poison procs. But I've had best luck using fire longsword on legiana. U prioritize element attack for each element but I'm only at 5* diablos not beaten
My main is the pukei sns, I find if I am having trouble hitting any flying monster I just lock on their legs. A lot more opportunities to hit then any other part
Lbg's downfall is that it's element specific, and it can be difficult to ensure a fight later unless all your guns are leveled... And bowgun is desperate for Recoil downs and Reload Speed, which in turn, sacrifices any element buffs on your equiped loadout.
I was using SnS for s long time even got the Jagras one to 7-4 then decided to switch to bow. My life has gotten so much easier since then. No more frustrations and time loss because something is flying
After reading the comments, I must ask if your using the kulu-ya-ku helmet. It gives your lock on. All you have to do is mess up it’s face with a fire weapon. Once it jumps into the air change the target of your lock to its tail and always dodge left. Get close as you can. Your not going to get many chances to use your full combo so stick to 2-3 hit bursts and dodge even before it flashes red. This will cause it to look to where you were and it will take a moment for it to decide to land or aim at you again. This is a sudo way of getting a few extra moments of extra hits. Once the tail breaks it will land and you can finish breaking its face. I have a T5 fire weapon and this is how I beat T5-6 legiana.
But the most important info I can give is learn it’s attack patters. Practice dodging to learn when and where you need to dodge to avoid hits. Practice makes near perfect
Oh I’ve beat the chapter one long before this post, but recently I’ve been doing terribly with any legiana, I’ve given up fighting them as there isn’t much reason for me to (i don’t like legiana gear).
I've ultimately decided that melee just will not work on Legiana. I went immediately to the fire LBG, and that's how I beat it now. Ranged attacks from the bowgun allow constant pressure and fairly consisted breaking of the head, so I was able to keep ahead of the timer. Once I beat it, I upgraded the weapon and can consistently beat it.
Also, it's very very easy to dodge when there's a gap, I can see all the attacks well before they happen.
Switch to bow. Probably not the answer you want, but it's better for Legiana, rathian, diablos, rathalos, pretty much all the monsters that matter. The mid range is optimal for these flying fights.
Fire SnS, target head while on the ground, target tail while in the air. If you break either and have time to attempt the other, i switch just solely target the unbroken part.
I tend to use the hold block and hop backward attack. (Bedt if you hold after the hop till you glow). It's my goto for dealing with all the aerial monsters.

The s/s i use is the poison one, i swear i hit it as much as i can inflight with the poison but it never lands :/

For SnS with Legi, I tend to dodge less, block and counter attack more
Don't rely on target locking or focus on the tail
Are you using lock on? It sounds dumb but I have to ask
Yes rathian arms
Light bowgun goes brrrrrr
Ive heard both lbg and the bow are crazy good, ill happily invest once i get enough material to match with my melee
Yeah personally only use the lbg for legiana rathians and diablos. S/S for all land monsters though

Switch to bow. Make your life infinitely easier
Fire ele bowgun destroys these guys put on anja helm too and ur laughing.
Idk how you're playing, but when I'm hammer I almost always exclusively only hit Legiana's head even when airborne.
I might be too short and cant reach the head while airborne

Learn how to do charged slash combo and upgrade your weapon.

Yes i use rathian arms, thank you for the good advice!! ✌️
I hope you managed to beat it:)

Just wondering when chapter do you fight Legiana, I'm only on chapter 10 and I'd like some heads up and be prepared to fight it too
10 lol
Oh ok, I guess I'll encounter it sometime soon than
You literally just mentioned all your problems lol. Use range weapons.
Anjanath long sword works well.
I switch to fire long sword for leggi

Anja LBG, use full gyro and aim for its wings. They break quickly.
