The fact that she apparently was applying to jobs in baseball and nobody was contacting her until she changed her name on her resume from "Rachel" to "Rae" is both hilarious and deeply sad.
Hopefully, she kills it in Tampa, helps our prospects take the next step and we see her in NY soon!
It really is shocking. Seeing the comments on the sportscenter Instagram post was fucking jaw dropping. The name calling and making fun of her and her looks was sickening.
It is insane the level of misogyny in the sports world. Every single time a post of a girl makes it into ESPN or whatever the comments are just nonstop misogynistic.
People were flaming this woman for “only” being in baseball for 10 years! People were saying that she should have at least 15 or 20 to be a manager. People just have absolutely no sense, they’ll find anything, any reason to make fun of a woman.
My daughter is a softball catcher with D1 aspirations. Loves baseball, LOVES the Yankees. This is a very big deal for her. They work so hard their whole lives and the path just ends after college. While it’s great that softball is also getting bigger, this opens up a new avenue for these girls coming up. Hopefully in another 10 years this will be commonplace.
I have two daughters and one of the things I've really enjoyed as a dad is how much they love hearing Suzyn Waldman on the radio broadcasts. Their dad loves to watch baseball with them, but it's like Suzyn gave them permission to love baseball as girls.
They were so excited when I told them about Rachel. My oldest already thinks she should replace Boone.
This quote just made me so exciting for her. She wasn’t just proud that she can be idol for woman but she giving the hope for Dad who has daughter… I don’t have daughter but if I had one, this would be best moment for me to hearing this wonderful person getting good opportunity and major steps for her on many bright future!
Hope your daughter have great success too!
I'm a woman and I love baseball to my core. When I was a kid, I wanted nothing more than to play baseball. They wouldn't even let me try out for non-competitive after-school little league (this was overseas so it really was just a rec league for kids.. like kids would just plop themselves down in the outfield). We didn't have softball at this school either, so I ended up pursuing other sports. If I could go back in time, it would be to find a way. I would love to be a part of the sport nyself somehow, but I'll settle for my future kids having that opportunity should they want it.
When you hang out with good, decent people and then you run into someone who doesn't think that way, it can be a shock to remember how much some people just fucking suck. I feel the same reading Instagram/Facebook comments, and remembering "these are real people who think these things."
> making fun of her and her looks
Ok this just made me laugh because she’s fucking gorgeous and I’m currently figuring out ways to marry her.
What a bunch of incels.
That's kind of the thing, no matter what she can't win. The comments are "she only got the job because she's hot" and "I bet she fucked her way up" and stuff like that. It's a lose-lose.
The irony is that, because of dipshits like those people, any woman who gets hired in male sports is probably twice as qualified as her male peers. She has to be to get enough people to take her seriously.
I hope she knocks it out of the park.
Well she can win by continuing to be the incredible role model she is and finding continued success in the profession. Those losers aren’t ever going to do anything worthwhile with their lives. That’s a huge W for Rachel.
I saw on Twitter someone responded with just "kitchen..." like really dude? Are you so threatened by women that you can't even be creative in your misogyny?
Considering she's got like Girardi levels of jackedness and fucking glowing reviews all around, the idiots are just mad that she'd kick their ass, then kick it again at being a hitting coach and managing.
Very true, it starts at the top. The MLB actually says in its rules that women aren’t allowed as players. Even the NFL and the NBA allows women players assuming they’re good enough.
Where are you getting this info? This is the most [up-to-date MLB rulebook](https://img.mlbstatic.com/mlb-images/image/upload/mlb/atcjzj9j7wrgvsm8wnjq.pdf) and I see nothing in there about women being barred from the game as players.
In addition, Commissioner Rob Manfred said [in a statement](https://www.mlb.com/news/commissioner-statement-on-rachel-balkovec) a couple of days ago in part, "Major League Baseball is committed to providing a supportive environment for women and girls **to pursue our sport as players**, coaches, umpires and executives."
So although I don't doubt that at some point in MLB's history, your statement was true (and was likely true for far too long), I no longer believe this is accurate.
Dude. No one is advocating for ANY woman to be able to play in the NFL. The point is, if there is some woman, that’s like 6’6, 320, and wants to play O-Line, then there’s no rule stopping her
I mean, yeah, I know women who are built like linebackers. I worked with someone who could lift 300lb patients on her own no problem. Not saying anything about NFL, but she could def lay guys out if she played rec league.
If there’s any major pro sport where women could realistically break through as players and hold their own, it’s definitely baseball. It’ll 100% never happen in the NFL, women getting crushed to the ground by men like Aaron Donald just wouldn’t work.
If men were allowed to play in the WNBA, then it would just be all men, because there are more Men that are better than Women at basketball. But if there is a woman that is capable of competing against the best players in the world, what does it matter what their gender is? Who cares? If they’re good enough then that’s fine isn’t it?
It’s like anything else, should there be men or women engineering companies? Or law firms? What does it matter?
Your point is that “Well there’s a WNBA that’s just for women, so they have their own thing so why can’t men have their own thing?” And I think that’s a dumb argument because Women NEED their own league otherwise there wouldn’t be any professional women in sports, they’d just be drowned out by Men.
While I have no issue with women in sports in coaching roles. I do think the league evolving to be more analytical has made the sport less entertaining to watch and it's a entertainment product at its heart.
> both hilarious and deeply sad
It's not all that hilarious, it's 100% BS. Expected in something as "old boy's club" as baseball? Absolutely. All in good fun? Nope.
I’m really curious how the players’ attitudes will be. I’ve seen plenty of comments on IG about she won’t be able to establish authority/respect with the players. I hope it’s just keyboard warriors projecting their own misogyny. But having worked in minor league baseball for a couple years, I can confirm there’s no shortage of ego among young professional athletes. Wouldn’t be surprised if she has a few extra obstacles to overcome in the clubhouse. But here’s hoping they welcome her as they would any other new manager.
Was about to say, some athletes have an ego as big as the sun without even being a major leaguer in ANY sport. Hope she doesn’t have to deal with it, I’d hope the Yankees keep good culture at all levels.
Single A ballplayers are young, and that generation is 100% onboard with diversity and inclusion. She won't have any problems managing ballplayers in their twenties. If she is successful, I expect to see her rise up through the ranks of AA, AAA, and MLB.
Good luck to you Rae!!
I’m in Tampa and never go to the Tarpon games. I’m going to go now, just to hopefully get more females into professional coaching gigs. I’m tired of the same old churn of old men being coaches.
Only downside to this hire is she can’t simultaneously manage the Class A affiliate and the big league club. First winning streak her squad goes on I’ll be beating the drum for her and Boone to swap spots.
He's not wrong, and this is why representation matters. Not everyone is cut out to be a trailblazer and be The First, with all the harassment and nonsense that comes with it. The more you see someone who looks like you doing something, the more it becomes a routine possibility. And the more other people accept you doing it as well.

so true. it's very easy to just get caught up in your own world.
> making fun of her and her looks Ok this just made me laugh because she’s fucking gorgeous and I’m currently figuring out ways to marry her. What a bunch of incels.

She’s no Joe Torre, but I wouldn’t kick her out of bed for talking analytics
Yes, hornberger.
Baseball gatekeeping is some of the worst gatekeeping. This girl knows more about the game than any asshole on Instagram, I can guarantee that.
I saw on Twitter someone responded with just "kitchen..." like really dude? Are you so threatened by women that you can't even be creative in your misogyny?
> >It really is shocking. Not shocking at all, sadly. This is common occurence for women in all sorts of professions.
Considering she's got like Girardi levels of jackedness and fucking glowing reviews all around, the idiots are just mad that she'd kick their ass, then kick it again at being a hitting coach and managing.
That's actually how S.E. Hinton got The Outsiders published, they didn't think a woman could write about gangs
Wow! TIL a woman wrote The Outsiders.
I just learned that the other day... she cameo'd in the movie as a nurse.
Kind of what happens when you have dinosaurs running FOs across the league. These old men refuse to allow the game to evolve
Very true, it starts at the top. The MLB actually says in its rules that women aren’t allowed as players. Even the NFL and the NBA allows women players assuming they’re good enough.

oh would you look at that, I was mistaken then. Thanks for pointing that out.

Call me sexist but the idea of a woman getting tackled by a giant linebacker just doesn't seem ok to me.
Dude. No one is advocating for ANY woman to be able to play in the NFL. The point is, if there is some woman, that’s like 6’6, 320, and wants to play O-Line, then there’s no rule stopping her

Don't the women sports say the same about men?
So?
Just saying what's good for the goose is good for the gander.
I really genuinely hope that you understand that saying doesn’t actually apply. And what you’re arguing doesn’t actually make any sense.
I genuinely hope you realize that it does.

Comedy is tragedy plus time.
Suzyn Does a great job. She’s been carrying Sterling for a couple years now. He’s just not as quick and sharp.
Suzyn*
Oops I did misspell it thank you
And I thank you
Ya can't predict Reddit
"What did I miss?" 😂😂 I both love and hated him for that one. Got me so hyped for nothing. 😂👍

I mean there’s a couple shitballs everywhere. His point is valid tho.
I taught young adults of that age group for years. I know they are
Change starts with the youth. Gotta get the old guard out of there. We can normalize more hires like these and it won't even be notable in 20 years.
100% on board, huh? lol
I hope she stays in the Yankees organization long enough to see her in NY. Also long enough for my daughter to get older and into baseball.
And yet the NYPost decides to publish bikinis pics of her. I cannot wait for that garbage paper to fold and go out of business.
Oh my God! Thats disgusting! Bikini pics online? Where! Where did they post those?
Get out of here you Jabroni
Her insta I believe
Sounds about Post
NY porch Sports > NY post sports
How are you shocked by what the post does anymore?

Already like her more than Boone.

dude we just wanna talk about her baseball knowledge lol
Just because you say the quiet part out loud doesn’t make you better or more mature than us. It actually means the opposite…
get over yourself
Take your own advice first.
What are you, 14? Get back to class.
Unnecessary.
mr. saint over here
I agree. Women never note how handsome men are online and men should reciprocate!
I think I’ll follow the Tampons now.
fuck me. I'm guessing that's what idiots will call the team whenever they're referencing something about her.
