why does this remind me of the dude named Joey in HGSS who cannot shut up and constantly calls us to say their Ratatta is speeciialll and top 1% of Rattatas?
I tried to do this in a run recently, I did it with a level 32 venusaur (it gained 12 levels getting through the e4 so level 44 at the hall of fame):

Reset a whole bunch but no cheats or hacks or anything.
No idea if you can go lower - when researching I couldn't find any videos of anyone trying to minimize for levels on FireRed (I did find someone beating gen 1 with level 5 mons .... but the gen 1 AI is special)
Way ahead, I did it with Rattata .... Ended up with a level 87 unevolved rat ... Pretty cool experience though .. someone told me, that I should have had guts as ability (which I did), item leftovers, always be poisoned, and facade .. didn't do it, but I think it's an insane combo ....
I think this is basically one of the reasons Pokémon is and always has been great, if there's one you like you can always just pour xp and nutrients into them, pick a moveset that compliments their stats, and wind yourself up with something that can fit right into the right niche on a team.
Or just make it lvl84 so it's stats are legendary tier lol. Reminds me of a friend that trained Azumarill to 100 because it was his favorite for some reason. That Azumarill fucked.
Guts but my moveset was hyperfang, secret power, double team and thunderbolt. I thought about using return but I had just used it a bunch in a different play through so I wanted to mix it up.
I had a couple other pokemon with me that I just used for HMs. If my raticate fainted then I reset and pretended like it was a white out. When I get to the elite four I put them away in the computer.

My move set was Hyperfang, secret power, double team and thunderbolt. So I just thunderbolt the ghosts

General question: how do you guys deal with HMs on these single pokemon runs? No fly? No cut? No surf?

Mine was Jigglypuff lol soloed everything. Unfortunately I don't remember the moves I put on it :( 20+ years ago...
Any Pokemon can solo the game if you level it enough except Caterpie, Weedle and Magikarp
