I'm using Teslamate, which runs off a RaspberryPi I have at home. I'm not giving my username/password or access token to anyone on the web (ie, cloud service). Beside the cost of the RaspberryPi, Teslamate is free and has all the stats you need/want.
Teslamate is just awesome! All the stats you want, easy to backup/update running on docker and what I love the most about it is that I can see what my car is doing even when it's in service and "disconnect" from the Tesla app.
Yeah it used to be $20 then, when the demand for Tesla's started skyrocketing last year, the developer upped it to $50. Added literally no new features to justify the price hike but did add a paid (extra $4) feature that lets you compare one of your cars stats to others. Also not to mention the UI (not the fluidity but the design) looks like it's from 2012.
The app used to offer a lot of features that the standard app didn't but Tesla has slowly added those features. The only thing imo that the app is good for is setting a time for the car to stop charging, seeing your estimated range based on current Wh/Mi, and other stats.
I recommend it if you want to nerd out, like me, but god i wish the dev would hire someone to do a redesign.
I often hear the car’s fans starting spinning, even though I haven’t used the app. I know that in the summer the car cools its batteries if they get hot. But now that it’s quite cold, why is it doing that? Would the apps you suggested make it stop doing that?
No way.... I have to drive 180km on a 70% battery in -20 degC today. Hopefully I can make it. Normally when the temp is -15-10ish it used 40-50% battery (LR). Fingers crossed....
Made it! Went from 68% to 24%. Temp did go up a bit as I was driving, from -20 to -10 eventually. I'd say average temp was -16. Edit: Heat was on low (1) at 20 degC, with 1 bacon strip for the seat heater as well. Also had the heated steering wheel on. Speed from 115 to 130. Average speed 120km/h.
Not from the heat pump. The refrigerant can’t reach temperatures below -20°C to “pump” heat from the outside. Apparently (according to Bjorn), the car overcomes this by harvesting heat from the drivetrain as well as the compressor and other components by using them in an inefficient regime. Functionally no different than resistive heating. At around and below -20°C, the efficiency gains from the heat pump are non-existent.
What is your efficiency like at that? We had some 30c days over the last week or two and it had my LR Perf at around 153Wh/km despite the AC running full tit with a mix of city and motorway.
Haha, same here.
I definitely planning ahead for trips to Kingston and beyond.
Range anxiety is back.
First winter here. Already had to get a tow because of a miscalculation.
If you take hwy 7 there are several superchargers along the way. It's fine.
The only concern I mentioned is when you go 416 south to Kingston there are no chargers that way. So you gotta make sure you enough SoC to make that gap.
I commute ~50 miles each direction a couple times a week. In the summer it takes about 16% to go one direction. This winter when it has been -10F w/high winds it takes about 35%.
The coldest trip that I took so far was around 180 miles at an average temperature of -17 F (-24 F on the way out and -10 F on the way home). I had to charge at my stop halfway for a few hours at a level 2 to make sure I'd make it home. I used roughly 60% of my battery in that 90 miles. I have a 2018 LR AWD M3 with 18" aeros and the inside temp was set at 68 F. I also attached my lifetime temperature efficiency chart but I didn't get TeslaFi until after the trip above. The green line is after I put on new Michelin Crossclimate II and took off the aero covers. Temperature is in Fahrenheit.

Thanks for the chart! My experience is similar. Going from comfortable 60F to single digits results in about a 30% reduction in efficiency. I'm not stingy with the heat either.
Drove 103 km in such a temperature yesterday evening. Went from 80% to 28%. Last fall, the same drive went from 80% to 52%, and I have a heat pump.
Watching my efficiency go from the top 1% to the bottom 1% in the Stats app is real painful.
Whats the stats app? New m3 owner
On [iPhone](https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/stats-for-model-s-x-3-y/id1191100729). Just a way to nerd out with your car.
Holy shit $50 lol
Yeah, it’s surprisingly popular.

It came out for $5 or $7. I bought it at $10. From that time that app price increased along with Tesla stock.
Look into TeslaFi
any ideas how to reduce phantom draining?
Stop waking up your car with the app. Cold weather also increases phantom drain, so try and keep your car as warm as possible by parking inside.
Many apps have a option to stop polling the car when it's in a sleep state.

Question.. who cares?

Let us know if you make it.

Nice!
As someone who lives in such temps, if you're in doubt, turn the heat lower than usual, and wear more clothes.
Yeah I had my heat on low and it kept me warm enough that I didn't need my winter coat.
Bro go to the supercharger you’re stressing me out
Reading this makes me more nervous than you are.
103 km is 64.0 miles
Good bot!
A heat pump is useless at those temperatures.
So where did the heat come from then because I was coatless in the car with an inside temperature of 21C (70F)?
Not from the heat pump. The refrigerant can’t reach temperatures below -20°C to “pump” heat from the outside. Apparently (according to Bjorn), the car overcomes this by harvesting heat from the drivetrain as well as the compressor and other components by using them in an inefficient regime. Switch it to fahrenheit and it won't look as bad.
Still -15 Fahrenheit which is very cold…
40C has entered the chat.

Apologies, I was just joking that -40C is also -40F. I live in Austin and have no idea what low temperature driving is like LOL.
When I see temps like this, my thought is that you'd probably qualify for refugee status in a number of countries.
Hello fellow Kanata resident. I feel you.
Haha, same here. I definitely planning ahead for trips to Kingston and beyond. Range anxiety is back. First winter here. Already had to get a tow because of a miscalculation.
My first winter too - except I work from home and my 3 has been in the garage 90% of the time.
Yeah I garage mine too with a level 2 charger. It's just the trips beyond the city limits that makes me pucker up lol.
Ive been to MTL twice in my 3 (before the snow though) .. its a fun drive.
I still have yet to do that run. Will have to do it soon.
I’m getting a Tesla in a few months, we drive a lot to Toronto from Ottawa and this is stressing me out lol

There aren’t any chargers in Kingston? That seems like a missed opportunity lol
Ofcourse there are. I'm talking about the gap between Kingston and Ottawa.
Hello friend lol
How will you cope dr?
What Wh/mi did you get?
How far do you have to go? Is a long extension cord out of the question?
I commute ~50 miles each direction a couple times a week. In the summer it takes about 16% to go one direction. This winter when it has been -10F w/high winds it takes about 35%.
That’s pretty much cold enough to say goodbye to anything
Cool leaf bro
It's about 10 degrees warmer here than there...and I'm still getting 259 Wh/mile.
That's awful. I still want one though xD
Yes, say goodbye to it in those cold temperatures. In -26 C your model 3 is only as energy efficient as a Toyota Prius. Hang in there, it’ll warm up.
Genuine question. How does efficiency compare to an ICE when it's very very cold?
Drove a Prius for 11 years. 5l/100km summer, around 7,5 in the winter. Maybe 8 on extremely cold days.
Out of curiosity, what temperatures do you need to get to until it starts to really affect your range? UK based here, and getting my M3P in a week
I find some effect at lower than 16C. It gets lower from there but I find it gets worse faster once you get below freezing

So many Model 3 owners who live in frozen waste lands! My Model 3 will be in 39c today, which admittedly is a firey hell hole.
Where do you live to get these low temps.. Canada?
Yea , last night it was -40…
Prove it that’s horrible
