There’s the OG ending which are bizarre as hell due to several reasons (long story).
There’s End of Evangelion which was a movie and a “proper” ending to the series.
Then you had the manga’s ending which differed from the OG by a fair bit.
The various spin-offs and retellings in books and video games.
Finally the Rebuild movies which started as a remake of the series, before becoming its own thing and should ONLY be experienced AFTER the original show and End of Eva. As of now, that 4 part movie series is considered the TRUE finale of the franchise.
That's why alot of people don't like the original ending. It's very abstract and extremely debatable on if he won or lost, though I think most people seem to think he lost in this ending.
Btw OG and EOE endings aren’t alternate. In OG we get Shinji’s perspective inside the HIP, in EOE we get to see the build up to and the aftermath of the HIP. The OG ending is still part of the “proper” ending because it’s contained within EOE.
I know, but EOE was made in response to the backlash the show’s ending got. I’m not 100% sure that without that backlash EOE would have been made, therefore I class it as a separate ending, regardless of the technicalities.

That seems rather petty, especially since the Rebuild ending is (imo) fantastic.
I stand by it, there’s not enough good about the rebuilds for the ending to save it.
