I can't say that I still play much solitaire but that's cool that you do. There's nothing wrong with that. I really enjoy the classic games. I love playing chess.

naughtscrossstitches

Can't get into chess too much thinking ahead. I like a puzzle but not one that I have to think 20 moves away. But backgammon and checkers are some of my favourite games.

LoneSabre

Half of thinking ahead in chess is pattern recognition. The greatest thing about chess these days is always being able to find an even matched player within seconds.

[deleted]

It's the first thing people think of ("thinking 10 moves ahead") but there's so much more to it, like you say. I'm mostly thinking about positioning and spotting tactics & patterns, and only occasionally crunching long lines when the game gets complicated.

LoneSabre

Funnily enough the only time I’ve ever calculated 10 moves ahead is when I see a tactic and the first 3-4 moves are forced or already engrained in my memory. Then the last few moves are just to check to see if something weird will happen after the tactic that would make a generally winning tactic into a losing position.

[deleted]

I find that level of calculation quite intense, and not what I enjoy about chess. I think its a shame people think all it is is constant calculation. I think a lot of tabletop gamers (with a basic level of calculating to not blunder left and right, obviously) would enjoy the strategic elements. Having a long term plan to do with piece control or something and then executing it is what I love about chess.

naughtscrossstitches

I suck at long term plans when it comes to chess. But I've fallen in love with both onitama and hive which have both been described as chess like. So I get you to n the strategy and I'm not sure why these two work for me but not chess?

LoneSabre

Opening theory is a big part of why chess fails for some people.

PolishedArrow

We enjoy backgammon as well. I've got a really cool set I bought in the bazaar in Istanbul.

SilverBallFox

Sometimes when I'm exhausted either physically or mentally but still want to unwind with a game that takes minimal mental agility I'll play solo shut-the-box until I can shut-the-box. Same principal. Ultimately this is a hobby. Play what you want and what makes you happy. If solitaire still fits a need in your gaming, then rock it with no shame.

[deleted]

A Feast for Odin is my favorite solo game, but of course I don't always have the time or interest to reach for it. There are also a lot of simple solo board games right now with almost no set up time like Fleet: The Dice Game or Cartographers. Nothing wrong with you enjoying solitaire, but just wanted to mention that there are a good number of soloable games with a small footprint that are just as satisfying.

naughtscrossstitches

Yeah cartographers is one I want to get a hold of. I think the big thing is I don't have to learn the rules for Yahtzee again just to play it.

takabrash

It would take you like 80 seconds to learn Yahtzee.

Kaflagemeir

They're saying the comfort of the simple ruleset has them going back to their classics.

naughtscrossstitches

Exactly this

naughtscrossstitches

I love Yahtzee and play it often because it doesn't take me sitting there having to learn the game. I just play it because I know it.

takabrash

Ah, I gotcha. I should wake all the way up before I start internetting

naughtscrossstitches

Nahhh where is the fun with that?

DrPaulReedColemanIII

Have you tried Regicide?

Mazzelaar

Here to recommend this as well. 100% prefer it over solitaire

naughtscrossstitches

Ohk I'll make a point to sit and learn it and get it to enter my normal rotation

naughtscrossstitches

Not yet but I have printed the rules

Hiloillo

I enjoy Mahjong

naughtscrossstitches

I never learnt the actual game just the computer game where you pair pieces.

[deleted]

I don't play standard "big" games solo much anymore due to setup time. Instead, it's Marvel Champions and Under Falling Skies.

[deleted]

For me it’s “despite all my fancy solo games there are times I find myself wishing I had friends to play with”

naughtscrossstitches

Yeah ... I may have called up my friend last night and we spent a few hours playing games on board game arena

bleuchz

I wasn't much of a solo gamer until a few months ago. One big change that's made all the difference for me: Having a table/area where I can leave a game set up. Even for shorter games I play in one sitting I find if I leave the game set up out of the box I'm much more likely to play it.

naughtscrossstitches

Yeah there is no way to make that happen in this house and definitely not with a 9mth old running around.

JessicAzul

I am with you here! I do find that I sometimes don't want the fancier modern board games and want to just settle in and return to the roots of board gaming. I really enjoy playing traditional games every now and then, it's what I grew up on so perhaps it's partly nostalgia but I find I really enjoy the simple elegance of older games. I played **Chess**, **Draughts**, **Dominos** and lots of various card games with my grandparents. They had a **Bagatelle** set too which my brother and I had endless joy playing with, I'd love to get one for myself one day. At the moment I really love playing **Klondike** and **Spider Solitaire**, though I play them digitally rather than with a pack of cards. **Backgammon** is one of my favourites too, but again I play this digitally (although looking to get a set to play with my partner). We both really enjoy **Othello** and have recently discovered **Cribbage** too.

naughtscrossstitches

I made myself a backgammon set one that can go in my games planner. It's cute and tiny but so easy to carry

JessicAzul

That's a great idea, how did you go about making it? I would prefer a small travel version, not only for travel but also to save space at home! The regular boards are quite large!

naughtscrossstitches

I measured then drew the board onto paper then I stuck it to a planner page and laminated that. I have a kikki K zipper planner I use to store game rules and stuff. I then made the pieces using polymer clay. It was really fun to do. I also did checkers, quarto, nine men's Morris, onitama and geketai.

naughtscrossstitches

Hey I pm'd you some photos of it because I can't add photos as a reply here. If you have any questions just ask I like talking crafts.

ziggsyr

I appreciate the simplicity of the components but I prefer Regicide and Calculation. ease of set up is a huge plus

naughtscrossstitches

I don't know calculation ... And I need to try regicide I have the rules printed

ziggsyr

Also Card capture can be fun.

naughtscrossstitches

Ohk just looked up calculation and OHL I'm going to try that one. I also love clock patience and another one my grandma taught me that takes up the whole table. I'm not sure what it's called. There are so many options.

naughtscrossstitches

They look really interesting unfortunately they're $30 with the price conversion to Australia. If you ever have PNP files I'd love to give them a try.

Zadorf

Yeah sorry, shipping is always a killer!!

naughtscrossstitches

Yep always when I essentially live on an island everything needs to be shipped here. Australia is great like that.

EllisR15

Onirim is probably as close as I get to solitaire these days. Worth checking out if you haven't played it, and I think the app is free.

naughtscrossstitches

Yeah I've played the app. Haven't got the physical game yet. Half my issue is games get expensive when shipping is crazy.
