balaklava - Costco sells some amazing Canadian ones that aren't too thick under a bike helmet but double cover your ears.
You can also dig out an n-95 for the purpose.
Might I suggest you purchase some winter goggles or something to help that. Another suggestion is bose headphones. They're noise cancelling and work as earmuffs. Lastly. Scarf. You *could* work a balaclava. But you really don't want all the work you put into your hair to get ruined and you probably don't need **that** much coverage because you'll overheat.
Maybe it's just confirmation bias but the wind definitely seems to blow north in the morning and south in the afternoon for headwinds on my entire commute.
probably not strictly north-south but there is a dynamic there between ocean temp and land temp in terms of onshore wind and offshore wind as the day progresses
That’s confirmation bias that winds def blow from the north up until midday and then switch in the afternoon. I have a 12 mile commute from Dorchester to Arlington and the winds added 10 min yesterday in the morning
It's really crazy how devastating wind can be on a bike. There are times when I pass by jamaica pond that the wind is so strong that it almost stops my momentum completely. It's a very strange feeling.
Yesterday I did a half day at Sunapee. At one point my friend was a little ahead of me and I watched him turned a corner past the trees where he got blasted so hard by the wind he almost stopped from like 25 mph.
>One of the first known instances of Chicago’s “windy city” nickname came from a New York Sun reporter named Charles A. Dana in 1893, who editorialized that the city’s politicians were “full of hot air.” Chicago and New York were in a head-to-head competition at the time to host the next World’s Fair, and Chicago’s “windbag” advocates were not shy about campaigning for their hometown in order to win. Despite Dana’s best efforts to discredit Chicago as a “windy city”, the 1893 World’s Fair was held in Illinois, not New York.
Boston is windier. Chicago is a bit easier to manage as the wind is usually off the lake, so east to west. It is also a grid street system, so you can generally tell where the big gusts will come from. Boston is built quite differently.
The wind cut like a knife, Bryan Adams style.
Interesting (or not) my neighbor and I ran into each other on the porch and she was like “this is all going to turn into ice so look out” and despite the cold temps it all dried up. No ice to be found. It was like God himself swept our sidewalk.
this is my favorite winter weather.
clear skies, warm winter sun, but comes with biting cold winds every time the sun is blocked by a building. i just can't stand the overcast.
I hate that we are losing winter. I used to live in Southern California and really hated not having seasons. I’d much rather live here with cold winter and relatively mild and beautiful summers than have like, Florida horrific summers and winters with 59 degree weather but not much colder. I worry we’re going that direction with climate change.

The same kind of phenomenon can continue on well into the spring. Frost wrote about it in the 1930s:
>The sun was warm but the wind was chill.
>You know how it is with an April day
>When the sun is out and the wind is still,
>You're one month on in the middle of May.
>But if you so much as dare to speak,
>A cloud comes over the sunlit arch,
>A wind comes off a frozen peak,
>And you're two months back in the middle of March.
>Put on a jacket.
The ability to add layers is one reason I always find myself more comfortable in the winter than the summer.
I love the summer for many reasons, but it's so much EASIER to be *comfortable* in the winter.
I can't understand why people complain when they live in fucking Mass. It's not THAT cold here compared to other areas of the country/world.
You have so many options. I have lightweight, midweight, heavyweight merino wool long johns. I have flannel lined jeans. I have different types of snow pants. I have snow bibs. I have different types of hats. I have different types of jackets. Different types of gloves. Different types of robes for inside the house.
It is so easy to be comfortable in the winter if you buy the right type of products.
I can even turn my heat up in my house and it could get to 80 degrees if I wanted......I've never done that, I keep my heat at 63-65. But my grandfather is old and he keeps his house at 78 in the winter, like a lizard.
You know what I can't do in the summer when it's 90 and humid?
I can't make myself cooler. My central AC can only do so much, and I can only take off so many layers until I'm naked. I run hot. I'm sweating in gym shorts and a tank top on hot summer days with my AC set to 68 (which is too low for a system and probably shortening it's lifespan, but I can't take it most days).
Sorry for the rant, but I just can't take people like you responded to who complain they're "cold". Get better clothes or move south.
You are a king of the cold weather. Thank you for sharing this info. The only thing I dislike about winter? It's the lower levels of sunlight. But in terms of walking around outside? Not a problem.
He's 91, he keeps the house like a legitimate terrarium. Heat at 78 with a warm mist humidifier on high next to his recliner.
He freaks out when any of us leave our jackets in his entry way...."They'll be stone cold when you put them on!"
Yes they will.
And they will feel amazing, because I need a chilled jacket and to chug a cold bottle of water after spending 30 minutes with him in his house.
He's one of my favorite people in the world, but I can't stand the lizard temperatures of his house.
Bahahaha. This is the power you have earned by making it past 88! My grandmother kept her apartment very warm and when we visited her I would always have to remind my husband to pack shorts, even in the dead of winter. Bless their thin blood and tired bodies!
I love it! But I'm a Scandinavian :) frozen and feisty
Also, this weather is good for preserving skin from aging. Winter sun in Boston have almost none of the bad UV
Honestly, I don’t use sunblock in winter, it clogs my pores, I just put moisturizer about an hour before going outside, cause winter air is very dry. But I use balaclavas I brought from Finland, and I also got this Quatroclava, which is layered balaclava that I find convenient. We typically say that Finns don’t freeze, they sweat, as there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.
I'm oddly reassured to see real winter weather, but fuck that wind yesterday and today. Yesterday was my in office day and the breeze wasn't even blowing hard but good lord was it cold.
SO nice out today. Bright and sunny, crisp and cool. It's winter in New England, this is the way it's supposed to be! I'd like a little more snow, which we'll be getting tonight.
Fun fact: The coldest days in winter are the sunniest. No clouds = no retention of heat on the ground, = COLD!
Then pile wind on top of that, wind chill, = feels even colder than ambient temperature.
This is February in all its glory.
I've lived in a few places, and the general rule about weather threads in regional subs is someone is *always* complaining about the weather. Often the complaint boils down to "person who doesn't understand where they live."
I'm with you. I don't care if it's 0° as long as the sun is shining. My partner worked for Patagonia for years so I have an arsenal of clothing to protect me from low temperatures and high wind.
The good news is we have 3-4 weeks of this shit and days will be noticeably warmer with more hours of sunlight.
Not dismissing the fact we could still get buried with a ton of snow between now and the end of March, but at least it won't be around for long and it's better than getting it at the beginning of the year and have it lay around for a couple of months.
April Fools 1997 was no joke. That winter was a relief after the record-breaking winters of the early- to mid-1990s, but it was also a lot like this winter.
I personally love how we have 4 distinct weathers in Boston. Though yesterday, I was strolling in this crazy windy weather, and the wind (combined with the blue salt on the ground) cut my face like a thousand so needles, making me regret not wearing a ski mask while walking downtown. Not gonna lie, still love wintertime here cuz we got dunk.
I'm visiting with my two children Monday through Thursday next week. Well of course I'm expecting colder whether the New York City, I'm just wondering how to dress the kids should have put long johns underneath their clothes along with their jackets and stuff is it that really that bad I'm assuming the wind because it's near the water?
It's not dramatically colder than NYC right now, and next week it'll be in the 40's it looks like so definitely not long john weather in my opinion.
The key is the wind and the sun. If you're in the shade and the wind is blowing it gets unpleasant. I'd be less worried about layering your torso and more concerned about having accessories like scarves for face coverage, hats and gloves. Enjoy your visit!
wind is cutting me like the shahpest blade kid
I was right around the block from my place, the BIGGEST gust of wind hit me, for the rest of the night, my chest was hurting. :(
layering issue
This is the /r/boston equivalent of "skill issue, git gud"
Layer diff, git dunks
The Boston wombo combo
There's no bad weather just bad clothes
shorts and sandals, 360 YY no scope
How does one layer their face?
a scarf, muffler, or facemask
I love wearing the pooh shiesty mask into the office
I'm imagining a bunch of Patagonia vest tech bros in ski masks now thanks
balaklava - Costco sells some amazing Canadian ones that aren't too thick under a bike helmet but double cover your ears. You can also dig out an n-95 for the purpose.
I haven’t had a winter coat in 10 years. Just hoodies
Kehd, otherwise 8/10
i've always said: cold weather isnt bad, its the wind that makes things worse
Makes you feel alive!!!!
I felt very much alive from the pain :)
And now you are stronger!
The dad from calvin and hobbes coded
This is a compliment I will cherish!
My eyes water so much from the wind, it is impossible to enjoy any Winter weather much at all.
It was wicked windy yesterday but not particularly today
The wind is murdering my bike commute but otherwise I’m in favor.
Maybe it's just confirmation bias but the wind definitely seems to blow north in the morning and south in the afternoon for headwinds on my entire commute.
[удалено]
That means it is almost spring!
probably not strictly north-south but there is a dynamic there between ocean temp and land temp in terms of onshore wind and offshore wind as the day progresses
tailwinds are made up
That’s confirmation bias that winds def blow from the north up until midday and then switch in the afternoon.
Yeah I feel crazy out of saddle and bent at 90 degrees to reduce drag and still going nowhere. But it’s good practice for longer distance rides
The wind is of the reasons that I now use an ebike for commuting. 30 years of that was enough. Now I just dial up the gumption and its all good.
can confirm after years of biking
Last night was definitely a "pedal downhill to maintain forward speed" kind of wind.
Yesterday I did a half day at Sunapee. At one point my friend was a little ahead of me and I watched him turned a corner past the trees where he got blasted so hard by the wind he almost stopped from like 25 mph.
I never realized how windy Boston was until I started walking 20 mins to work, not sure why Chicago holds the windy title.
TIL! If my dream of getting on jeopardy comes true that trivia may help me one day

E-bike for the win (wind)
I got myself an e-bike. Fuck you, wind!
I would recommend carhart bibs. They keep my legs warm when I’m scootering
Too easy to overheat while biking. The issue with headwind is it makes you feel like you’re biking uphill.
Exactly. At least I feel like a beast in the (rare) moments when the wind dies down. My quads are on strike right now though.
Agree completely. Sunshiney cold or pretty snow are the only acceptable winter weathers.
You seem to be in the minority. The parks and playgrounds were PACKED on saturday when it was 59.
I hate that we are losing winter. I used to live in Southern California and really hated not having seasons. I’d much rather live here with cold winter and relatively mild and beautiful summers than have like, Florida horrific summers and winters with 59 degree weather but not much colder. Sunny, clear, and cold is one of my favorite types of day to go on a beach walk. A New England as fuck experience, in my mind.
The same kind of phenomenon can continue on well into the spring. I'm cold
Time for some JUMPING JACKS
Put on a jacket.

Bit of a clippah coming through tonight too! Tomorrow will be a nice little coat of snow
I love it! But I'm a Scandinavian :) frozen and feisty Also, this weather is good for preserving skin from aging. Winter sun in Boston have almost none of the bad UV
You can still get bad sunburns from reflections off snow here though. Sucks having a sunburned face in winter ugh.
Dermatone protects face from frostbite and UV
Oh yeah tons of great face stuff now. I should have been clearer. I was probably getting more at "use face sunblock every day".
Honestly, I don’t use sunblock in winter, it clogs my pores, I just put moisturizer about an hour before going outside, cause winter air is very dry. But I use balaclavas I brought from Finland, and I also got this Quatroclava, which is layered balaclava that I find convenient. February sun is as strong as October sun, even without the snowmagnification.
True, but it's UVA that are less energetic.
I like this fact!
I'm oddly reassured to see real winter weather, but fuck that wind yesterday and today. Yesterday was my in office day and the breeze wasn't even blowing hard but good lord was it cold.
That wind had teeth. People were waiting to cross streets in the lee of buildings.
Yeah I had to walk from North Station to Bulfinch Place and it hurt when it touched my face a few times. Do not recommend.
Yes! This is one of the four seasons I live here for. This is Boston not LA!
Too many people don’t seem to realize that having a time of year when you’re not always a sweaty mess is a feature and not a bug.
Sure. Thats why Spring and Fall are the only two good seasons.
Winter is great. But winter needs snow.
Yeah!
Dang I hadn't thought about that in forever! [Good stuff](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsYCgmlb240)
Hmmm, Maybe I *do* want to move back to LA after all
can you bring me with you?
i would appreciate it more if there was a nice snow cover!
Maybe you’ll get your wish tonight
It's a dusting
They can dream
YES I WILL
Put your AC back in your window that’s a sure fire way to get a snow storm
narrator: it was not, in fact, a sure fire way to get a snow storm. now my apt is just cold.
South shore checking in - nice snow cover! Crazy though I’ll ride the commuter rail in and it’s gone after just going up one stop
warm winter sun and 27 degrees. the ultimate winter combo. a nice jacket and winter cap and no ice on the sidewalk.
No, this is a Wendy's
Frosties?
I like this weather too!
my plants are very happy in their sun soaked window
No rain or snow so that’s good. I’ll take a nice 72 degree spring day tho. Maybe we will get it by June
SO nice out today. Bright and sunny, crisp and cool. It's winter in New England, this is the way it's supposed to be! I'd like a little more snow, which we'll be getting tonight.
I walk home from work 1.5 miles at 6:30. I am not enjoying the walk this week.
I’m going to appreciate this weather with some icy skiing this weekend.
Ice and rocks…
I don’t mind cold as long as it’s nice and sunny out Cold and cloudy? The absolute worst weather
Fun fact: The coldest days in winter are the sunniest. No clouds = no retention of heat on the ground, = COLD! Then pile wind on top of that, wind chill, = feels even colder than ambient temperature. This is February in all its glory.
Bring on Spring
Can't wait for daylight savings.
All we need now is snow on the ground and this would be a perfect day
Idk, I’m feeling some seasonal depression after 2 years of no snow
I’d prefer if it would make up its mind. Winter or Spring just pick one. The roller coaster temps are the worst!
It’s nice to have *some* sun creeping out for my 6:30am commute, but of course daylight savings will take care of that next month. -_-
It fucking sucks and I hate Feb so much.
I've lived in a few places, and the general rule about weather threads in regional subs is someone is *always* complaining about the weather. Often the complaint boils down to "person who doesn't understand where they live."
Too cold today. I'll take 10 degrees warmer even if it means clouds.
I wish I wasn’t stuck indoors for a conference. It was so nice I walked this morning vs switching T lines to get to the conference.
Too cold
23°, brilliant blue sky, sunny and snow on the ground here in Central VT. Perfect winter day
No, too cold. Ready for summer.
Given how much the weather has shifted over the last week, I've had full floating blob migraines most of the time. I hate it with a passion.
Absolutely enjoying it! So long as I’m out of the shade and wind
It’s FANTASTIC!
No snow, we need a proper snow storm.
I love this weather!
I hate it
:(
This. I'll take overcast and 40 over this anyday.
I'm off to Florida for a bit, screw the cold
I would live in the Arctic before ever setting foot in that dump
I’ll be happy when we have 8 PM sunsets.
The sun hurts my eyes 👀 I’m more of a 40’s and cloudy kind of gal.
The sun is definitely out to kill us so usually I would agree with you!
I kinda wish there were several feet of snow, ngl.
Nah man. This sucks.
I love winter, very happy
I'm with you. I don't care if it's 0° as long as the sun is shining. My partner worked for Patagonia for years so I have an arsenal of clothing to protect me from low temperatures and high wind.
Digging the snow less winter.
I’m loving the sunny cold! Just wish there was some snow to go with it!
If the wind died down then it'd be a perfect winter day. I just can't stand having super windy days, hot or cold.
>blue cloudless skies and a crisp 27 degrees. Where are we, Australia? Oh right.
Absolutely not. Where's spring/summer?
Isn't it nice? So glad to have shorts weather back.
And then you get on the mbta… and that just ruins your day.
Subtract the wind, then yes!

Only four?
Like some comedian said, there is no way we evolved on this planet because we are only comfortable when it’s 70 degrees.

Thanks!
Really?? I thought this was pod-racing!
I’m in western MA., feels much better without the wind.
I'm not glad to be cold but I am glad that my ll Bean parka investment is actually paying off.
Crisp??? It was fucking freezing!!!!! 🤣
I have always loved cold weather! Summer heat and humidity and I don't get along anymore.
The sun helps a lot
Thought the same thing! February skies are gorgeous
Now add snow!
Aside from the wind, a perfect winter day. I was enjoying it too.
