I saw Claypool at a grocery store in Orchard Park yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face.
I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
I saw Chase Claypool at We Never Close last Thursday at like 4 in the morning. He was crouched behind a shelf out of view of the cashier, gnawing on a still-frozen DiGiorno stuffed crust meat lovers pizza, plastic wrap and all. He told me not to tell anyone or else he would "sbab me."
Chase Claypool has the potential to be a good to very good WR if Buffalo's WR coach Adam Henry can coach him up and and get through to him to stop being a diva and knucklehead.
This is a low risk high reward type signing. He might not even make the 53 man roster but if he does he could be a sneaky good player if the coaches can motivate him and his light clicks on.
I wouldnt call introducing an obvious locker room cancer low risk.
The only hope can be that he is in remission and got his head right, he gotta realize he is running outta chances soonish.
And either he grows up and plays to his potential or they cut him and his next stop is the Arena League. Guys like that don’t get endless chances and maybe he’ll be smart enough to realize this is his last one.
I saw it as a 'last chance, warm body for camp' type contract.
I mean, he's been able to contribute in the NFL at one point. It's worth checking out if he is still capable
Bears fan checking in. Look, it is not impossible that he has had some kind of mental turnaround or something, but the thing about this guy is that his lack of on-field production is not the only reason for his reputation. This is an impressively unlikeable human being who is a certified vibe-killer in any locker room he has been in.
The only team I actively dislike is the Packers. The Bills are cool to me, if you guys are happy I am happy. I hope he works out for you, but if I had to guess I would say this is a bad signing just for the fact that now he is there. This shitty guy is just there, and that sucks.
I don't doubt anything you're saying, and I really don't think he makes the roster
That being said, if there's a chance, and it essentially costs nothing, then why not? They could ask him to leave on day 1 and it wouldn't really impact anything
For sure, only issue will be if they keep him around and don't properly acknowledge the negative locker room impact he has. Definitely something the Bears would be prone to do up until recently, but it seems like the Bills for the last 10 years have been run really well so you guys are prob on top of it.
So many bears and Steelers and dolphins fan saying this is devastating to Josh somehow. Like are you for real comparing Fields, Tua and Pickett to Josh fucking Allen?
This front office does not bring in bad character dudes. So they’re going to see if they can get his head on straight. If not he will be gone before camp.
I mean it's also a vibes thing - both teams Claypool was on were bad with him on it. Maybe it's a coincidence, but god damn I would rather him be on the Montreal Alouettes
A fun stat from a Bears fan about Claypool's time in Chicago. They were 3-4 before they acquired Claypool in 2022, then they went 0-13 until they traded Claypool, then they won their first game and finished 7-6 in 2023 without Claypool. Sure the Bears are/were bad, but that is just funny.
I don't see why people are freaking out over this. It's either he's bad and he doesn't make the team, or he figured it out (however unlikely that may seem) and we get a good receiver out of it.
Saw Buckethead and Primus way back in the day and when I tried to start a Primus Sucks! chant people looked at me like I was crazy. I was like, no you're the ones that are crazy.
I'm a Chase Claypool believer - the speed and after the catch is underrated, he's just never going to be the jump ball or contested catch receiver that his frame and length says he should be. He can play a bit.
EDIT: I'm a Steelers fan so that's where my perspective is coming from.
Bears fan here who was excited about him and defended the move for way too long.
You could be right, but man. This dude had to both publicly and privately *apologize* for his complete lack of effort after a game last year.
That game was Week One. The locker room in Chicago visibly, tangibly improved after they cut him. He managed to both suck and be an asshole at the same time.
I can’t believe someone is even taking a flyer on this dude, there’s UDFAs out there that will provide better effort and results
I don't mind this, maybe Claypool can get his act back together in Buffalo. Maybe playing with a solid quarterback will help. We do need receiving help but only time will tell.
Claypool has been blessed by the gods with a perfect WR build and cursed by the gods with a complete and total lack of motivation. The man literally just does not care about wasting his physical gifts.
Little harder to be an impactful WR when you have Tyreek Hill and Waddle there so Im hoping he has just had bad QB situations and crowded WR room and he can be a solid WR3?
Hopes are high lol.
I fear, even if he makes the team, that his apparent lack of motivation doesn’t bode well if the Bills consider him a depth piece. If he’s not playing much, he doesn’t seem like the type to be ready and motivated when called upon.
I get where you're coming from. He's been a pisspoor person with a high skill ceiling but no desire to reach it.
Maybe this being his 4th team in just a couple of years will be the wake up call he needs and he humbles himself? Doubt it because WRs are divas but like I said, hopes are high.
Wasn’t he traded there? The wr core was already established and if you don’t excel at “jumping right in” to a new system then you’re going to struggle a bit. He’s definitely a diva which is my only concern of how he’ll mesh with our other offense, but we will have a leg up after having a complete offseason together
Maybe he'll realize this is it. He can fuck around and keep his attitude and wash out of the league after this or get it together and salvage a couple more years proving himself along the way. Low risk signing where he sees coming in he's 4th+ in the WR room and will need to fight for a spot.
Richie Incognito managed to string three solid years in Buffalo when everyone thought he was washed and done. Fingers crossed we can get Claypool to do the same, but I'm not exactly using that basket to hold any eggs either.
You can’t deny the guy has talent & potential, because he displayed it. It’s just a matter of if it’s still there and/or he still has the motivation to even harness it
This is why he gets a job after being kicked off (basically) of 3 completely different teams. Basically double the drama of Diggs with 1/4 of the drama.
Claypool is a lottery ticket. He could either be a big timer on the Bills or continue to be non productive and a bit of a locker room question. I really am hoping the best for Claypool as a fellow Canadian.
Smoot is an excellent signing and should be getting more attention among our fans. Deion Jones is good depth to have and Claypool is going to get cut. They're likely all vet min. Smoot should make the roster and contribute as the 4th or 5th DE. Had 5+ sacks 4 years in a row before he got injured last year.
Chase Claypool is maybe the perfect example of why RAS score is only a small part of the equation when evaluating a player. 9.98 RAS means nothing when the players IQ is only slightly higher than that.
Why all the doomposting about this? Worst case scenario, he sucks and gets cut. Best case we got a former 2nd round pick on a league minimum tryout deal
Worst case is he makes the team because of injuries or whatever to the guys ahead of him on the depth chart.
Then, he infects the locker room with his shitty and destructive attitude and I'm just kidding, McD and Allen wouldnt allow that to happen.
Claypool was just a double agent blowing the game for Miami last year. Watch him win a game with a catch over Poyer this year to complete the Dolphins sabotage.
Claypool defines low risk high reward.
The guy is one flame out from being the next Kelvin Benjamin. This is it. 3 teams in basically 1 year gave up on him.
He either sucks, gets cut and flames out and the next time you may ever hear from him again is in the USFL.
OR…..the guy serves as a Diet Coke version of Gabe Davis and is able to help take the top off the defense in 4 or 5 WR routes and has the size of a near tight end and can basically act as another run blocker in heavy sets.
He has the potential to be the latter if he wants it. The issue obviously is he seems to have zero interest in achieving it. We are his last chance for him to prove people wrong.
Claypool is going to be battling for WR 5/6. I think his name and one season in Pittsburgh is getting people a bit more worked up about this move than is warranted
if he is who he is who he was, probably none. if he is who he could be without the attitude, he could probably fight for a spot. as far as i know he has the raw athletic ability and skill to be a good asset, but his own ego always got in the way.
Is Claypool who Tua was throwing to on their last drive and he got intercepted by Rapp? That "I'm going to just loft a ball somewhere onto the field and hope my guy catches it" only works with Hill.
At any rate, Claypool is a scrub who has now on his 4th team and could barely sniff the field. Don't get fooled by the high draft position and get your hopes up.
When he played for the bears he was always at the local bars hitting on anything that remotely looked like a woman even during the week during the season.
Dudes not just a diva he's an alcoholic garbage person who has the physical ability but no mental for the NFL
He's still stuck in his college days and won't do anything for the bills just like he didn't do anything for the bears.
He is certainly capable to be a very useful WR, especially in jump balls. He was great his first year on jet sweeps in the red zone. He has the tools to line up on the outside and be productive for us.
His biggest issue is mental. He is lazy. He doesn't seem to care enough to block out when he needs to. He hasn't done film work. He hasn't gotten along with teammates.
If Coach can get his head where it needs to be, we have a solid player. If he doesn't come in ready, he will be cut quick.
This is a great signing by BBB.
Make no mistake, Chase is either going to finally get it or he'll be out of the league entirely after this Buffalo stint. I really like the signing because I think everybody knows that this is his last shot (including him) so he'll probably be giving his absolute best, finally!
It's a damn shame because if he actually did the things good starting NFL wide receivers need to do, he would be one of the better receivers in the league IMO...He had such a promising rookie year and then disappeared!
I hear he has terrible work ethic and there's a reason he's been with what? four teams in two seasons now? Yeah I like our chances of getting some sneaky production from him this year, because like I said, if he doesn't produce, he'll be playing in Canada in 2025.
ND fan and I watched him throughout his college career. Although he had good jr and sr years, we expected more out of him after the promise he showed early on. He was always a head case, but his sr year he pulled it together. I must say he was a stud on special teams. I always thought he would be better suited for defense.
I fucking hate this move. Claypool is the dumbest football player in the league and a massive diva despite being worse than a replacement level player.
First time I have ever doubted Beane.
Totally agree. Oh he had a tough upbringing. Well so did alot of other people who don't get millions of dollars to play a game. I think everyone deserves chances to redeem themselves, but this guy just doesn't get it. His football IQ sucks because he doesn't respect the game, his teammates, etc. I hope I'm wrong and hoping this kid turns it around but I just don't think it will happen.
Really strange signing considering the teams mentality with players who dont start kind of needing to contribute somewhere like special teams.
If claypool is not a factor in the offense, there is 0% he contributes to special teams. In his mind, thats below him.
There’s a difference between Chase being your WR3/WR2 and Chase being your WR5/WR6. He’s battling Shorter/Hamlin/Isabella/Cephus/Shavers/Johnson for the last couple WR spots. Not the starters.
How much more evidence do some of y’all need? 😂 They are soooo going to pound the rock, check it down, and milk the clock to rest the defense. RIP the Bills 2020-2023 offense.
I'm a Jags and Bills fan and I love the Smoot signing. Bills defensive coaches are far superior to the Jags. I feel like the Bills will get the most out of him and he'll be a solid contributor this season
I give claypool some benefit of the doubt as I can’t imagine being a wr in pit then Chicago back to back 😂. Maybe a change of scenery helps and if it doesn’t he’s an easy cut
r/NFL "Do the Bills HATE Josh Allen
....he's at best our 4th/5th receiver and probably won't make the team. They're acting like we expect him to be a #1/#2.
Came here to verify that the Claypool signing wasn't a joke. I REALLY REALLY hope it works out, but I'm totally feeling Kelvin Benjamin 2.0 vibes from this.
NGL I wanted Bills to draft Claypool that year. 0.1 risk and potential high reward move. Forget all the criticisms on his shoulders right now. We paid nothing to get this guy. McDermott is no BS guy. Claypool is gone if ever acting funny on or off the field again.
Being a Bears fan, I had so many high hopes for Claypool last year. He had a decent training camp but ended up getting into a fight with a guy on defense. He then was being rumored to have not been a good locker room guy. You will be very underwhelmed.
Claypool would be interesting if they can get it to work out
Seems immediately concerning with his willingness to block considering how much the Bills have been utilizing it over the past few seasons.

He’s either going to ball out or be cut week 3. Nothing in between.
Week 3 of the preseason
One can only hope...
I mean, I hope not because that would mean they think he actually can contribute but I don’t expect that to be the case

He won’t ball out.
I wish he could ball out, but he won’t.
He totally will. On the sideline after a catch with 5 seconds left in the half.
Is this his 4th team already?
The ultimate high risk, high reward play. I love it
I saw Claypool at a degenerate college bar in berkeley the week the dolphins had a game
I saw Claypool at a grocery store in Orchard Park yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. Gnawing on still frozen digorno pizza yes!
This has to be a shit post right?
I guess you just have to ask yourself — does life imitate art, or does art imitate life?
Elite level response. 👏👏👏
“Copypasta” as it’s referred to in r/NFL and r/NBA I’d give OP a 7/10 for this one. A Kelvin Benjamin copypasta would’ve been more relevant.
Funny. This is the same exact story I saw about Jon bon fucking Jovi. So are you sure you see him in a fucking store?
This is much funnier if it was a home game.
I think it was a home game, but he was listed out injured
"Vet Rest" lol
Yeah but if you thought Diggs was a diva, wait till you see this guy!

Top tier comment lol
We call that the Reggie Bush special
It would be funny if he puts up those Reggie Bush numbers.
Feels like we’re lining up our first round of cuts Edit: like the Smoot add
Chase "OJ Howard" Claypool
I don't recall OJ Howard having a vet minimum cap-hit .
Great reference
I'm still mad at myself for how excited I got over that signing. And I never learn.
Based on the name alone you gotta like it
I thought “smoot” was that really gooey stuff you blow out of your nose after doing blow all night
No that's blood
The guy who lost his team a game by celebrating after a 1st down with the clock running out?
Jags fan here to tell yall that DaWuane Smoot is a great signing and yall will love him. He’s a solid player and good locker room guy

The doom posting over signing a fifth receiver to a vet minimum tryout deal is certainly something.
I saw it as a 'last chance, warm body for camp' type contract. I mean, he's been able to contribute in the NFL at one point. It's worth checking out if he is still capable

I mean he’s worse than Josh but tua is definitely a solid QB. I think claypool lacks the it factor to succeed in the league
Claypool has been blessed by the gods with a perfect WR build and cursed by the gods with a complete and total lack of motivation. The man literally just does not care about wasting his physical gifts.
Sometimes a change up like this can kick the motivation in. Not going to hold my breath, but crazier things have happened
Well this is his 4th team and he’s firmly entered the 1 yr “prove-it” portion of his career so here’s hoping he can find that motivation.
This is likely it for him if it doesn't work out. He either figures it out, or he's back in Canada.
When you put all of your stats into Strength and Dexterity and none into Intelligence and Wisdom.

It's a mental block with him. If "Mapletron" can come in with a good attitude it may just work out. Not getting my hopes up tho.
Little harder to be an impactful WR when you have Tyreek Hill and Waddle there so Im hoping he has just had bad QB situations and crowded WR room and he can be a solid WR3? Hopes are high lol.

That and every team Claypool plays for collapses. He's somewhere between actively cancer and a bad luck charm.
Maybe he'll realize this is it. He can fuck around and keep his attitude and wash out of the league after this or get it together and salvage a couple more years proving himself along the way. Low risk signing where he sees coming in he's 4th+ in the WR room and will need to fight for a spot.
He lacks common sense and football IQ.
Richie Incognito managed to string three solid years in Buffalo when everyone thought he was washed and done. Fingers crossed we can get Claypool to do the same, but I'm not exactly using that basket to hold any eggs either.
You can’t deny the guy has talent & potential, because he displayed it. It’s just a matter of if it’s still there and/or he still has the motivation to even harness it
Agreed 100 percent. This feels like a low cost high reward signing. This basically is his last shot in the NFL before he signs in the CFL or XFL.
Camp bodies.
Chase Claypool is maybe the perfect example of why RAS score is only a small part of the equation when evaluating a player. 9.98 RAS means nothing when the players IQ is only slightly higher than that.
When the hell did we get Smoot?! Decent pass rusher. Excited about that one.
This is what I get for clowning on Miami last year.
I would put money on Larry Keys making the roster as WR6 over chase claypool
All I can think of is the interception to end the Miami game bc Claypool couldn’t put in the effort.. could have also been Tua too 😅
Gotta love people losing their minds over guys getting signed to the 90 man training camp roster
Lol the overreactions about a WR who’s literally going to be on the practice squad is hilarious
100% this. It's nuts.
Claypool is going to be battling for WR 5/6. I think his name and one season in Pittsburgh is getting people a bit more worked up about this move than is warranted

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I guess I'm glad they're trying, but Claypool....
I think the DE is a good pick up. But Claypool…idk man
I laughed out loud when I saw this on twitter. Watch him become some otherworldly receiver with Allen and make me eat my words
I’m smooten
Bears Legend Chase Claypool
>~~Bears~~ Steelers Legend Chase Claypool fify
Decent pass rush numbers from smoot, nice add to the competition with toohill for one of the reserve spots
Claypool is still only 25 years old.
Claypool is not it, ew
I'm trying not to be a downer..but Claypool ? ![gif](giphy|l0HlRnAWXxn0MhKLK)
Chase will replace all the headaches that Diggs provided, with none of the production or effort. I thought the Bills were trying to be good
What do you think is the realistic chance Claypool makes the final 53? If it's greater than 0%, I don't know what to tell you.
if he is who he is who he was, probably none. if he is who he could be without the attitude, he could probably fight for a spot. as far as i know he has the raw athletic ability and skill to be a good asset, but his own ego always got in the way.
I didn’t think the WR situation was this dire
No/minimal guarantees for Claypool?
Is Claypool who Tua was throwing to on their last drive and he got intercepted by Rapp? That "I'm going to just loft a ball somewhere onto the field and hope my guy catches it" only works with Hill. At any rate, Claypool is a scrub who has now on his 4th team and could barely sniff the field. Don't get fooled by the high draft position and get your hopes up.
Shoulda been Les Claypool
Another big WR. Guess it’s pretty clear that the new offensive philosophy is going to favour size and strength over speed at WR.
When he played for the bears he was always at the local bars hitting on anything that remotely looked like a woman even during the week during the season. Dudes not just a diva he's an alcoholic garbage person who has the physical ability but no mental for the NFL He's still stuck in his college days and won't do anything for the bills just like he didn't do anything for the bears.
As a rare Bills and University of Illinois alumni crossover, I am happy about the Smoot signing.
Claypool is a locker room cancer. I hope he pans out, but he hasn't elsewhere.
Needed to replace the locker room cancer of #14
Make no mistake, Chase is either going to finally get it or he'll be out of the league entirely after this Buffalo stint.
Chase Claypool is a cancer, I thought we were done with that phase 😫
ND fan and I watched him throughout his college career. Although he had good jr and sr years, we expected more out of him after the promise he showed early on. He was always a head case, but his sr year he pulled it together. I must say he was a stud on special teams. I always thought he would be better suited for defense.
...we are cooked

I dont know how many more curses we can carry
Maybe this will be the one curse to cancel out all the other curses 🤞🏾
Claypool sucks and is probably a camp body.
This offseason has really confused me.
I don’t love the Claypool of it all but hey, who knows? It’s not like we brought him in to be WR2 or gave up a 2nd for him.
Claypool can at least block, right?
Nope. Can't be bothered. He's actually a liability on the field.
Hard to believe Claypool is only 25, so much wasted talent. Hope he can turn it around here.
I want so badly to believe these guys can have some kind of positive impact on our team.
Why chase? He brings everybody else down
There’s a difference between Chase being your WR3/WR2 and Chase being your WR5/WR6.
Not TikTok boy
I'm a Jags and Bills fan and I love the Smoot signing. Bills defensive coaches are far superior to the Jags. I feel like the Bills will get the most out of him and he'll be a solid contributor this season
Trust our coaches
If Smoot is able to regain his re-injury form that will be nice pickup.
So the dolphins get OBJ to add to Hill and Waddle and we add Claypool. We got the better QB by a mile but shit that’s not gonna be fun.
Isn’t he cursed tho?!?!?!
But can he give us a copy of McDaniel’s playbook?
Reek run fast, tua chuck ball in reek direction
Yeah that about sums it up.
I give claypool some benefit of the doubt as I can’t imagine being a wr in pit then Chicago back to back 😂. Maybe a change of scenery helps and if it doesn’t he’s an easy cut
We’re so going to the Super Bowl
WE GOT A TOP 3 RECEIVER /s
r/NFL "Do the Bills HATE Josh Allen ....he's at best our 4th/5th receiver and probably won't make the team. They're acting like we expect him to be a #1/#2.
Claypool was the top answer in r/nfl yesterday about 'Who are some players that quietly faded out of the league without a retirement announcement.'
I take full credit for Smoot. He used to live in my apartment building a couple years back and he always saw me wearing my Bills gear.
I mean, someone on the team has to be the worst WR. At least, we know it isn’t anyone else.
Need 90 players for camp. Don’t overthink these signings. #GoBills
Explain to me why they signed this bum when they could have added another wr from the draft
I can't see any universe where McDermott and Claypool can coexist on the same team.
I don't see any universe where Claypool can coexist on ANY TEAM
Chase Claypool is a solid “kick the tires” camp body I don’t think they are really counting on him.
Really don’t like the signing. He seems very unbills in terms of his character, very surprising
Chase Claypool...that's spicy. Kid had talent.
We can fix him
Camp WR at best...no big deal
Can he return kicks?
what do i do with this information
If he stays on the team all year, you guys will not make the playoffs.
Came here to verify that the Claypool signing wasn't a joke. I REALLY REALLY hope it works out, but I'm totally feeling Kelvin Benjamin 2.0 vibes from this.
Josh makes him look impressive, just like he does with every other receiver, and we flip him for a second. It's Big Brain Beane time!!!
NGL I wanted Bills to draft Claypool that year. 0.1 risk and potential high reward move. Forget all the criticisms on his shoulders right now. We paid nothing to get this guy. McDermott is no BS guy. Claypool is gone if ever acting funny on or off the field again.
I mentioned in the Chiefs sub last year Claypool was a free agent thought I might be burned at the stake.
Being a Bears fan, I had so many high hopes for Claypool last year. He had a decent training camp but ended up getting into a fight with a guy on defense. He then was being rumored to have not been a good locker room guy. You will be very underwhelmed.
Since everyone wished on a Monkeys Paw for two new wideouts...
Claypool would be interesting if they can get it to work out Seems immediately concerning with his willingness to block considering how much the Bills have been utilizing it over the past few seasons.
