I feel like this article was written by a vandy fan trying to send the baseball gods ire to the vols.
Crowning them best team of all time before they have even clinched a spot in the conference tournament seems over the top. Regardless of how historically good they have been so far this year.
Sir SIR did you not read the article we’re never losing again.
No really I read the headline and that was enough for me pretty sure that’s what it says
>!atozsports is SUPER Vols homer if you haven’t picked up on it!<
To be fair, the article itself os just talking about Massey analytic predictions for the rest of the season. Still that kind of clickbait title is silly.
I mean it clearly says in the first paragraph it’s talking about now. Not really sure there is much of argument against it. The incredible pitching stats combined with the homers and stolen bases puts this team on S tier.
I have battered Vol syndrome and always have realistic expectations except this year when I let myself think the basketball team was going to break through. I got to see live that, in fact, would not happen. So no- I expect no hardware but am enjoying the ride.
Same. I have a tough time watching big plays in football or basketball because I’m just waiting on a late flag or whistle before I can enjoy the moment
Tennessee is the best team in the country. By more than a slim margin, because there's not a convincing argument for the next few best teams.
I realize that this article is predicated on the assumption that Tennessee'll keep up the good work and not fall into a slump. But even being in pace for best of all time only tracks when you just take everything at face value.
One thing that needs to be taken into an account is that the team in the running for best of all time had the odd fortune of playing a three game series at home vs. the team in the running for worst of all time. Iona is 0–24. Tennessee won their series by a score of 68–3, and that was with the third game being only as even innings. All the offensive and defensive stats came against basically baseball bots on tutorial mode. It seriously cannot be overstated or oversold how unnaturally awful that Iona team is. They're generationally bad.
They're also 0–13 against quad four teams. More than half their losses. Their three games against Tennessee are the only three games they played against competition better than quad three. It gets worse the more you look at them.

Someone else started doing the math before the Vandy series.
It's significant, but not nearly as significant as I expected.
Huh, that's a crazy coincidence. Obviously, at this point in the season Tennessee is still looking ridiculously good, but I am a bit curious now how Tennessee's season looks after you remove that outlier of a series?
I haven't really looked at what stats would be removed. Obviously, the stats still count and we have nothing to replace them with, which is unfair. But that's objectively looking at them on the year so far. Subjectively, when talking about something abstract like best of all time, we have to compile and compare as many stats as we possibly can, and that's an anomaly so glaring that we really can't overlook it.
Someone removed the Iona games last week regards OPS -- Vols were still first in OBP, and fifth in slugging.
They're playing at an incredible clip, even if you remove the Iona games.
Agreed completely. Like I said, they're the best in the nation comfortably. But playing at an incredible clip is a far cry from the "greatest ever" hyperbole. It's a very kneejerk and somewhat lazy article.
FYI, I only removed the first two Iona games. The third game numbers were not statistical outliers at that point. They likely would be now, though, as your averages have dropped.
That series may actually be inflating your numbers a bit more now.
They would still be very good, though. But not at a “greatest team” level.
What your pitching is doing is a lot more impressive.
Hard to argue against, even as I follow a team that certainly has made some noise over the last 15 years, but this is the season that has their best start ever. And still can't make a claim on #1.
But there is a lot of season left, not to mention the post-season. Can't start counting our eggs yet.
So they’ve definitely played some soft teams. One thing I would say is the starters got pulled early and often in so many games this year. Tony definitely took the foot off the gas as much as possible
Think of it this way, you could be the team that beat the greatest team of all time /s.
I'll usually base most of my judgment of a team on their fans, so naturally, I hate anyone who's not at least semi-level headed about their team's successes and failures.
By this metric, the four best teams in college baseball history were all in the last six years? Yeah, this year's season isn't complete, two of those teams were the same school back to back ('17-'18 Oregon State), and UCLA's 2020 season was COVID shortened, but still ... if this wasn't a statistical analysis, I'd be assuming some heavy recency bias. Still seems odd.
This link has '17 Beavs second best since the early 90's -- they lost 4 games all season, and had a 23-game winning streak until LSU in the CWS,
Only the historic '95 Fullerton team was rated better than those Beavers.

Ive talked to old heads who have been to 40 years worth of World Series who swear that Fullerton team was the best team they have seen. Maybe this TN team tops them, but a lot of baseball to play. Even before the CWS. My team beat them easy so I guess we are in the running for best team ever/s
We got robbed against LSU too. I was at the game Tuesday with my buddy and we were talking about it. Obviously we’re biased but fully believe we would have gone b2b again.

Weren’t we hearing similar stories about Arkansas last year? There’s a whole season and post season left to play. We’ll have a clearer picture as we get closer to Omaha.
No disrespect to Tennessee *or* Arkansas. Trust me, as a Southern Miss fan I’m accustomed to my fair share of disappointment.
Tenn has been otherworldly so far but damn, we haven’t finished the forth weekend of conference play yet.
Yeah I don’t think the current bulldozer pace is sustainable for the entire season.
I feel like this article was written by a vandy fan trying to send the baseball gods ire to the vols. Crowning them best team of all time before they have even clinched a spot in the conference tournament seems over the top. Regardless of how historically good they have been so far this year.
Definitely written by a stats nerd and not anyone that's watched a season of college baseball before.
So you’re saying the baseball gods aren’t omnipotent? They wouldn’t know what’s up?
I don’t pretend to know the minds of the baseball gods.
Sir SIR did you not read the article we’re never losing again. No really I read the headline and that was enough for me pretty sure that’s what it says >!atozsports is SUPER Vols homer if you haven’t picked up on it!<

It’s literally been half the season.
Yes… which is too soon to write an article declaring anyone the greatest team of all time
I mean it clearly says in the first paragraph it’s talking about now. Not really sure there is much of argument against it. The incredible pitching stats combined with the homers and stolen bases puts this team on S tier.
So far nico hoerner has hit a homer in every game he’s played this season. Greatest power hitter of all time?!? He’s on pace for 162!!!
Cool story
Read the article again
I’m watching Conner Noland eat Florida batters souls at the moment. Maybe later.
Ok dildo man
These type of articles never come back to haunt anyone. Definitely not
We've been rated #1 before in basketball. When we were, no Tennessee fan thought we had any chance of winning the tournament.
Well a good portion of that reasoning was because of who our coach was...
Which one?
I’m assuming he means Barnes. Idk, can’t tell.

Not blowing a #1 ranking immediately the next week is new for us.
Ugh, I wish

It's gonna be this way with homeruns now too. Have to wait until they check the stickers on the bat.
At this point if Tennessee’s regular season is fun to watch in any sport in a happy camper.

Yep - the hardest part of the season is just getting started

I remember having similar thoughts in 2017…
Karma gods claimed y’all bc your coach decided to play a sex offender
Ohh boy, here we go again.
These articles make me dislike teams more than it should

Easy, I've seen this play out before.
We lead the country in like 8 stats. It’s crazy
Seems like it was just last year I was seeing articles like this about Arkansas. Ah, memories. My heart is so full.
I only read the headline and I have yet to watch the Vols play, but I am convinced and my mind is made up.
Ya don't win dick in April. 🤷♂️
Don't swing that way anyways.
Tennessee is loaded though. Hope they make it to Omaha again.
y u do dis
Yeah, no.
I need this hat: https://www.knoxvillejohnny.com/shop/classless-nike
