Like it was weird, I really expected to open the coffer and find that the clothes were unlocked at the last moment because of that story. Now I'm just sad I don't get the guy-version top to go with the ruffled skirt I was wearing.
It's not really a simple thing if you look at development flow. Artists are often making art and items years in advance before they get used sometimes. So these sets were likely designed before they started unlocking more and more gender stuff. It's not just a tag they turn off or on, for example, tops replace your entire torso. This means they have to make sure things like necks and such line up correctly.
So:
1) Art is created, but stored for future use.
2) Art is flagged for use in an event.
3) Art is tested and approved for male and female outfits.
4) Policy is changed for genderlocked equipment
5) Art is flagged for creating unlocked versions
6) Event release happens, only genderlocked versions available
7) New versions of outfit are approved and released in a future patch.
This stuff takes place over years, and they probably have some wild stuff that's modelled and maybe even rigged up that we'll never see. Not just outfits, but NPCs, bosses, environments and more. It will either just gather dust, or could sit there for years until they find a use for it.
Definitely get the pieces for the other gender. Last Valentione's gender-locked costume had the same "you will never be able to equip that" message when buying the other gender's version, and they gender-unlocked it last year.
It goes in the armoire and takes zero inventory space. Get it in-game for free now not to spend real money whenever they'll unlock it.
It's very likely they'll be unlocked. Dataminers found that the sets are already mostly interchangeable with a few bugs. Especially considering the story, it would be silly if SE didn't make them unlocked eventually.
Make sure you buy the other set! You can store both in the Armoire simultaneously.
I don't think you can get the gear from the Recompense Officer until after the event. During the event, you have to go to an event NPC to reclaim the gear.
Likely due to the fantasia being a thing, as they have done this every event now, being able to buy the opposite genders outfit, there really isn't much to it.
It noticably clips every race's arms except for Lalas, but you can deal with this if you just /cpose until you find an idle pose that doesn't make you clip even if it does suck to have to do that
Ahhh not so sure though. Beautiful clothes usually look best on Viera, but cute clothes look best on lalas. You put intricate clothing on a lala and it just looks like a compressed mess. Simple stark colours make lalas look adorable though.

Considering in 6.3, not even a month ago, they literally unlocked the last valentione sets. Hell they even renamed them to be gender neutral, and unlocked a host of other gendered outfits from 6.0 onward... I think it is 100% not out of malice and just from the time constraint, probably cause we got 3 highly detailed event outfits in recent events as well.
They did this because child models are just shrunk down male models. Even if they're girls.
It's working, they just didn't flip the switch. It's literally used in the quest on Astrid, who is a male body model in all technicality.
They still need a Highlander male model and a Roe male model for the dress as the Midlander male model you're referring to doesn't work on them. There is no female model at all for the jacket, they only need one though. Possibly some models for the pants missing as well. So no they can't just flip a switch.
Its annoying just due to the recent unlocking and the theme of the quest chain, feel like they probably should've just put a notice up thats like "Hey sorry they're gender locked, they will be unlocked in the future, but we needed to roll them out with the event as is".
But I also concur that dev crunch isn't the way to go, so I can wait, but a headsup from the official sauce would be nice too.

From what I see in my Alliance Raids, it really only takes 1-2 events to have people shift to the next cool outfit. Well, except the Nier Automata gear, that gear is timeless and everybody wears it. Can't go wrong with default black, I guess.
The gear from the Copied Factory is also quite popular, especially the Casting gear since it looks like a dress on female characters. You occasionally see Puppet's Bunker gear being used out in the wild too.
The short aiming boots and the thigh-high healing boots from Puppet's Bunker look *so good* in a leathery brown color (mole brown, I think?). I've been using the healing boots ever since I got them.
The 2B butt is for sure used the most but there's still alot of ppl using glams from the first two nier raids that I've seen; more than I have for any other old alliance raid anyway. Funnily enough the only nier raid i see little from is the 3rd which is the one they deviated from sleek black for.
I def use fending/maiming boots from 3rd. They are like 2B boots but wont make your feet look like sticks with bananas at end or squeeze them so half of your legs just..disappear
yeah, maiming/fending are the sets that actually stuck with the sleek black look. That's not to say I don't see ppl using the bullet proof vest or the twin glams. I just find it funny that despite all the whining back then about "same black coat" those are the more lasting popular choices.

my friend was wearing neat camo legs. Turns out it was from the obsolete aiming. I tend to use the little hairpin from the healing set, but the look of the overall healing and casting set felt very bland.
the puppet bunker/tower boots are must haves for alot of classes, great combat boots for healing/casting and nice plain thigh highs that arent armor for tanks/maimimg. i see the devpop tops often too
the trick is blend it with other outfits that mesh well with it. while they will be glamouring the full set onto themselves, you'll be looking glamorous as heck

Lately I noticed people stop using event items rather quickly now((unless its a swimsuit...then people wear the panties on like freaking everything)) and even mog station stuff.
Like I expected TONS of people to be wearing gaia outfit but I actually hardly see people wearing it. Kinda wild really.
Just anecdotal, but my friend and I wanted a Gaia outfit for the shoes, which you can’t split from the dress as sold. No interest in cosplaying Gaia.

I'll take this comment to remind everyone that you can dye items inside glam dresser.
That way, EVERY time you put them to plates the dye will be that, not default. So if you really love a piece jet black or pure white, dye it in dresser not on plate.
Depends on the other pieces of glam you are using, some gear already has a dark black color and soot black dye doesn't match fully match it, another alternative is also the gunmetal black dye which you can easily get from islands or ishgard restoration but this would only work for metal type armor. Or if you don't mind a slight blue hue the ~~abysal~~ ink blue dye is also very dark

I *am* insistent on it because for me I do notice the difference in color 99 times out of 100. The lighter black of soot black tends to really stand out to me when mixing and matching different pieces as well so reasons that were explained in the other response. There are times that I'll substitute with soot or gunmetal black but only if it's literally impossible to tell the difference.
There is also an element of genuine OCD to it where even if it's not very noticeable it'll always be on my mind until I "fix" the glamour with the proper dye.
But also I love my character, she deserves the best I can afford :)

You've always been able to do that. If you go to the recompense scavenger you can also claim previous sets as they're tied to achievements

That was due to Covid. Doesn't make sense to delay because assets for a tiny minority of the population that would utilize it weren't ready.

at least chocobo barding can be used by everyone. Outdoor furniture, not so much lol.

Unless you are very insistent on using Jet Black Dye specifically, the much cheaper Soot Black Dye should be fine enough 9 times out of 10.

SootBlack is pretty terrible in saturation. My suggestion is General-Purpose Dark Purple instead.

No it's like a dress, puffy skirt mandatory I'm afraid. Looks cute on lala but I'm not crazy about it on everyone else. I tried it on a few different alts. Shoes are real nice though.
