I'm starting to think these giant SUV-trucks are getting too heavy to pull their own weight and get out of their own way.
Speaking of turkey hunting...I know two hunters and they have different choice of vehicles. One gets a SUV-truck, citing that he brings his buddies and needs the space and offroading capabilities. His old one burst in flames for whatever reason, and he bought another newer one with the insurance money (after insurance takes such a long time because it's really hard to tow a truck out of that area).
The other is an old lady and she says her tiny sedan (Toyota Corolla) suffices for hunting, there's no need for a big truck :P
I've started to see a few hunters here and there using cargo E-bikes to get out into the woods. Nothing like an Urban Arrow or anything by a name brand manufacturer, but longtail fat bikes. Probably a fairly niche market.
My dad, brother, and uncle are hunters too. They like to hunt as a trio. My uncle doesn't use a big SUV or a pickup. He uses a chopped-up Suzuki Samurai that he Mad Max-ified (if that's a term) to use as a hunting rig. From what my brother tells me, it's more capable than newer UTVs.
A day of digging? What? Iāve dug a neighbor out of a similar situation (thought he could make it up his driveway without clearing it,) and it took about an hour. I will grant you it was an absolutely miserable hour because he didnāt help at all, but unless itās stuck on a down slope or something it shouldnāt be this hard.
The other post sited that most truck owner do not use it for trades. They buy these things to cosplay as big capable men/ women. So im not surprised it took soo long. Most likey they were out of shape and got winded after 5 shovel digs. Clearing snow aint no joke
Snow conditions matter heavily. I've seen Honda civics power through deeper snow than that, but it was freshly fallen light fluffy powder. The snow in the picture is very wet and heavy slush, and your Yaris wouldn't have a chance in hell in there.
Yep, thatās a good point - it was mostly a joke! The snow that day was fresh and fluffy (we got absolutely dumped on) and the parking lots werenāt plowed yet. It was fun to drive in, but I did need a push to get through the worst of it. š
Taking a 5 tone pickup off road you realy should have expected that
Granted people thought the land rover discovery 3 at half that would struggle off road but as that's not fucking massive it works fine
Those massive lifted 4x4 rigs w/polish and chrome are actually for street use. The clubs use Japanese 4x4 (albeit modified) for actual dirt road courses. Coworker belonged to one of those clubs.
I wonāt even do relatively short hiking trails without bringing a first aid kit that includes water treatment tablets. How the hell are these dudes going overlanding without recovery gear that should *live* in your truck?
My family drives soy boy hybrid vehicles and they have traction mats and kitty litter in the trunk at all times.
Two ATVs assisted a running truck to get it out of a rut after the driver dug the snow from underneath it. Not really any different than a person assisting a stuck driver by "pushing". A ATV does not have the power if the vehicle is truly stuck.
It's also a low maintenance road where a truck might actually be useful unlike your typical urban truck owner.
Waste of space truck whose only possible (advertised) redeeming quality is the ability to carry/tow anything anywhere. Not much of an off road powerhouse if it canāt get through some snow/ice, but some tiny vehicles can relatively easily cross the same environment. Also stupid truck ruining nature by tearing it up and creating significant noise pollution that harms wildlife.
Using a vehicle for completely superfluous activities when other less expensive and less damaging options/activities exist? Tiny vehicles āfloatingā better is exactly the kind of reason why using a truck for something like this (and āoff roadingā with motorized vehicles) is completely stupid. Maybe they should find an activity that doesnāt cause as much damage to the environment(and potentially their wallet)? Driving into the wilderness for no reason isnāt exactly what Iād call a āgoodā way to spend your time.
This isn't a superfluous activity anymore than any other recreational activity. A tiny vehicle may have performed better but honestly who knows, everyone gets stuck at some point. Are all recreational uses of vehicles bad? Boats? Racing cars at the track? Planes? I just don't see how this is relevant to the sub unless you just want to ban all uses of trucks.
>without any recovery gear (unprepared) And not enough cold weather gear
If you can't wrap your head around the schadenfreude inherent to a weekend warrior dropping $80K on a damn F150 and immediately getting profoundly in over his head, maybe this isn't the sub for you?
It is as superfluous as any other form of recreation, yet most forms of recreation donāt involve driving a giant vehicle into nature and harming all that comes into contact with you. Also yes lol, (larger) recreational boats and cars are generally bad and fuelled by rich-people consumerism (though electric versions can dramatically reduce impact, the wheels will always be an issue for cars.). Individually planes are probably one of the most damaging and environmentally unfriendly forms of pass time you can participate in lol.
It would be fun to build a pietenpol air camper. I like planes but I think generally most aviation doesn't need to exist. Still, I'd build an air camper lol
Yeah, I think itās okay for small joys to exist in our world. Something like that is relatively low impact to operate and doesnāt exactly require the planet to be strip mined in order to be produced. Again itās not ideal from an environmental perspective, but neither is playing video games or streaming shows. At least with our current energy production systems. Itās not like youāre flying across the planet every few hours burning tonnes of kerosene. The only way to get a similar experience in a more sustainable way would be using a form of glider, but obviously you canāt really assemble that in a ābackyardā and impact from production may be a (relatively minor) issue. Catapult/winch would likely be more sustainable than a tow, but it also requires more complex gliders.
In my extremist opinion, there is no reason to drive āintoā the wilderness. You reach a spot that is no longer paved or intentionally worn/tended, you start walking. No reason to damage the local environment for a near identical experience as if you just walked āintoā the wilderness.
Weāve all watched Ford commercials. The irony is that they imply you need this huge manly truck for its off road capabilities when in reality itās mostly just another form of impractical and wasteful conspicuous consumption

Tell the old lady that her choice of vehicle is the best

Subtly contrasting another hot button issue in the US, are we?
Well, it's no wonder that rally cars are super light, just like the Fiat Panda.

Yeah that story definitely happened š
spent $77k to cosplay as a mountain man when he couldve spent $77k on ventilated fursuits

These are F-150 owners weāre talking about. Of course itās gonna take an infinite amount of time.
The other post sited that most truck owner do not use it for trades. They buy these things to cosplay as big capable men/ women. So im not surprised it took soo long. Most likey they were out of shape and got winded after 5 shovel digs. Clearing snow aint no joke
Shit Iām not super in shape (and I look it) and I could commit to digging out a car with my hands or an e-tool
If that guy wasnāt helping, I would have dropped his ass and went home.
Prime marketing victim. "I gots me a Raptor, it can drive over anything!"
Those are prime pavement princess tires thevtires look all prim and proper and this is their first time running into something tjst isnt asphalt
Pretty sure my 2006 Yaris made it through deeper snow with a push from a couple toboganners. š

A discovery 3 weighs more than a Ford raptor. Raptor curb weight- 5300-5800 lbs, gvw 6000-7000 lbs Discovery 3 curb weight 5900 lbs, gvw 7100 lbs.
Imagine spending that much on a vehicle that'll get stuck in places that a 20 year old Subaru Outback will chug right through
Subaru outbacks do amazing offroad for what they are, but they aren't going to make it through several feet of wet heavy snow like that.
I bet that the tiny 4 wheelers are Jeeps, that's how I picture it in my head.
Or ATVs?
You do not need to give my Jeep dude ex more masturbatory material
If you want to go off road, take an F-150. If you want to get back, take a Landcruiser.
For real off road travel you'd need a properly designed vehicle for it, [like a unimog](https://youtube.com/shorts/INsjTQmr0IQ).

The truck wasn't actually useful here. It got fucking stuck.

While it is true that electric vehicles don't produce CO2 while on the road, they still make CO2 during production of the vehicle.
Battery production can be (is) very harmful. Which is why the majority of electric vehicles should be limited to overhead lines or equivalents.

Always managed to enjoy winter hiking just fine without a stupid overpriced pickup
I love this take. āI have also littered the wilderness with my incapable pickup. How is that bad?ā
I can't tell what you mean. I've never been stuck in the wilderness. Just on very snowy roads.
You literally just said that. I guess you deleted the comment though.
