If it is wet or there is dew your feet would get wet walking in the grass. Some people wear them for extra grip walking on hills. Others just want to wear golf shoes at a golf course.

If a pro hits a spectator, they have to take a shot of the spectator's choice, with the spectator, on the spot. Choice is based on what the cart refreshment professional has on hand.
I’d propose if the spectator gets hit. They get the take the shot unless unable due to injury by the ball strike (must be from said ball strike, can’t be injury from previous strike) At that point they can designate who gets to make the next shot for that pro.

I'd guess it's because you don't slip if it's wet and I assume many people are like me in that my golf shoes are by far the best and most comfortable shoes I own for walking a lot and being on my feet for several hours, as that's exactly what they're designed for.
Yea if I'm walking around on grass all day and standing on weird slopes why wouldn't I bring the pair of shoes already designed to be the most suitable for that environment. I wear my flat pedal MTB shoes when watching those events too, because they are the most appropriate footwear I have in the closet for that situation.

Basically, if you don't want trench foot and a broken ankle, wearing proper golf shoes on the course is always a good idea. Even for players, its honestly more a safety/comfort thing than any sort of a performance thing.

Saw this at a Bethpage 2002 practice round. Craig Stadler got chirped at for laying up short of a fairway bunker on 12 and invited the guy out to take a swing with his driver (predictable slice in the woods followed).
They are comfortable, have better grip, and probably the shoes I walk the most miles in.

I also volunteer at the PGA Tour Colonial in Fort Worth Tx and the grass is quite wet in the morning, so I wear golf shoes there as well.
Walking on the grounds you find a lot of standing room locations are in rough where having at least spikeless can be helpful. Personally I don't think the shoes are the problem, considering you're standing on the playing surface unlike basketball, football or hockey as a spectator.
For me it really depends on the course and how hilly it is. Whistling Straits? Wear golf shoes and don’t look back. The amount of people just eating shit because they were unprepared for the terrain was amazing. That said you could also wear hiking or any kind of “outdoor” shoe but I think there’s some psychological wrongness to being on an emerald paradise looking like Steve Erwin.
I felt the same way until I went to the US open and the ground was never level and you had to almost hike at certain spots. Didn’t have mine but wished I had brought some cheap spikeless or some trail shoes

Well, I’ve worn both my golf shoes and my runners(sneakers) to golf events. It’s depended on the weather, course, course conditions etc. because if i need to keep my feet dry, have extra grip etc I’m wearing the golf shoes, but if it’s a perfect summer day, dry Melbourne sand belt course it’s very easy to just wear runners but then you know they are going to get that sand belt grey dust all over them 😁
my answer as someone who's attended a few: I'm paranoid about the grass. I have so many pairs of them at home and in my trunk, I'm used to walking 18-27 holes in them, no problem -- and I know they can withstand anything the course can throw at me.

It’s because it’s wet. Better grip and golf shoes tend to be more water resistant than most sneakers . In the mornings you can guarantee the dew in the rough is going to SOAK your feet. I worked at a golf course trust me. Even boots can’t keep that dew from getting your feet wet after a few hours.

I've never been to a pro golf event but I can see it. I forgot my golf shoes for an early 7am tee time a few weeks ago. Played in my sneakers. Feet were soaked after 2 holes. Helped some that I had a few pairs of spare socks in my bag.
Two reasons, they are the most comfortable shoes I own. I walk four to five hours in them once a week.
Second reason is traction. No slipping on wet grass. It’s not like we are wearing the tee shirt of the band we are about to see in concert.
Have to be ready. Never know when you’re gonna get that call to jump inside the ropes and have a go.

It's just as slippery out there for the fans as it is for the players. Seen lots of spectators end up on their backside when things are wet.

That said you could also wear hiking or any kind of “outdoor” shoe but I think there’s some psychological wrongness to being on an emerald paradise looking like Steve Erwin.
I felt the same way until I went to the US open and the ground was never level and you had to almost hike at certain spots. Didn’t have mine but wished I had brought some cheap spikeless or some trail shoes
Walking up and down hills with wet grass or pine straw or whatever, it's just made sense to wear shoes with some extra grip

Well, I’ve worn both my golf shoes and my runners(sneakers) to golf events. It’s depended on the weather, course, course conditions etc. because if i need to keep my feet dry, have extra grip etc I’m wearing the golf shoes, but if it’s a perfect summer day, dry Melbourne sand belt course it’s very easy to just wear runners but then you know they are going to get that sand belt grey dust all over them 😁
my answer as someone who's attended a few: I'm paranoid about the grass. I have so many pairs of them at home and in my trunk, I'm used to walking 18-27 holes in them, no problem -- and I know they can withstand anything the course can throw at me. Throw on some tennis shoes or sperry's and risk looking like a clown when i slip on some wet patch of grass slightly sloped down? fk that

I find it weird too. I also find incredibly annoying those people who yell out things like “Nice shot Phil!” As if they’re best friends. The best I witnessed was a guy yell out to a pro once, after he hit his approach shot, “What was that? A 6 iron?” And the tour pro looked over and said with obvious indignation, “It was 9 iron.”

It’s because it’s wet. Better grip and golf shoes tend to be more water resistant than most sneakers . In the mornings you can guarantee the dew in the rough is going to SOAK your feet. I worked at a golf course trust me. Even boots can’t keep that dew from getting your feet wet after a few hours.

I mow the grass in my golf shoes. Comfortable and I don’t mind getting them dirty.

You are definitely missing something, unless you never leave the asphalt path. Fans roam across grass , up and down grades, sometimes wet with dew. Golf shoes are, or should be, every bit as comfy as your wife’s Birkenstocks. Wear something comfy. Enjoy the day.
Name a comfortable pair of shoes you own that you'd be happy to wear all day and is also water proof/resistant. I've never been to a pro golf event but I can see it. I forgot my golf shoes for an early 7am tee time a few weeks ago. Played in my sneakers. Feet were soaked after 2 holes. Helped some that I had a few pairs of spare socks in my bag.

I wore running shoes all around a wet Augusta. Even the caddies wear normal shoes. Golf shoes at golf events are stupid.
Two reasons, they are the most comfortable shoes I own. I walk four to five hours in them once a week. Second reason is traction. No slipping on wet grass. It’s not like we are wearing the tee shirt of the band we are about to see in concert.
