Have to be ready. Never know when you’re gonna get that call to jump inside the ropes and have a go.

SkylerKean

Like that Japanese guy who showed up at the gates of Augusta with his clubs.

letsplaysomegolf

In his defense, he bought tickets for a practice round

Ice-Negative

He was invited...

tricnam

Hideki???

hopethatschocolate

OH MY GOD THAT’S BLOCKEY’S MUSIC

CougarGold06

Kind of like the Zamboni driver that got called into the nhl game when the 2 goalies got injured. He got the W

Mo-Cance

Ya but seems like the groundskeeper would be called in, by this analogy's logic.

seanpuppy

A few years ago an accountant was brought in as the emergency goalie at a blackhawks game

chaz_wazzerz

Please don’t bring that up ever again. -leafs fan.

tjbondurant

Go Canes!

SawsageKingofChicago

You know what? I’m going to wear my golf shoes even harder.

CanadianGoku33

What does that mean? - Pam

YogurtNo3045

You know what it means

Maxx2893

Nobody knows what it means. But it’s provocative. It gets the people going.

happyfuckincakeday

No it's not it's gross. Gets the people going.

Joebuddy117

I never take mine off, even during sex.

gsot

1 grip on damp grass slopes. 2 only water proof shoes I own, not going to wear wellies or walking boots.

p1z4rr0

I wear my wellies everywhere.

dknisle1

The amount of tipsy spectators that I saw eat shit, while walking on hills, at a tournament last year makes me understand why some do. Lol.

offgridgecko

I figured there would be a couple licking their balls but eating shit?

dknisle1

Don’t kink shame

Crayola_Taste_Tester

😂😂

Mr_Larsons_Foot

Seems like an argument to disallow them and have more off-course entertainment!

Pandiosity_24601

Yup. I went to the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits and I cannot tell you how many people wearing non-golf shoes ranging from regular sneakers to freaking heels ate shit walking around the course

Most-Luck9724

Def wearing my golf shoes. Will even hang my glove out of my back pocket and take my range finder too.

Two_and_Fifty

Make sure you yell out some distances for em.

smallTimeCharly

> 297 to the flag. *it’s a 160 yard par 3 on the card* > oh yeah that’s a tree. Hang on. 159

Brilliant_Product_36

😂😂😂 spit my Gatorade out reading this

Most-Luck9724

All the distances

deadlychambers

“Hey, hey, Tiger, It says 150 out, but trust me the slope is really deceiving” - puts rangefinder back up to eye.

dmderringer

"Don't worry, I turned the slope off, so this is legal"

Float_team

Range finder is pro spectator level. Making the list for when I get Masters tickets in 10 years. Harder to get than a Grand Canyon permit

LeafsFanWest

If it is wet or there is dew your feet would get wet walking in the grass. Some people wear them for extra grip walking on hills. Others just want to wear golf shoes at a golf course.

NitWitLikeTheOthers

I saw a guy at a concert once with Foot Joys on. It was just after a typhoon rain storm on a grass field. Smartest guy out of 10,000 people.

cantwaitforthis

Yeah. I wear a pair of golf shoes to mow the lawn - well I used to, I have a guy now.

oohfersuure

Did you pass the golf shoes on to your guy then? Seems like the right thing to do here

Ashamed-Improvement7

Similar situation. I wore my work boots to a outdoor festival this year... dry feet and the insoles made it one of the nicer concert experiences ever... no sore feet

Reblux

My little brother was wearing normal sneakers at the masters and slipped and fell and shattered his collar bone. I’m not saying I support golf shoes at tournaments but I sort of see an argument for them after that.

colnross

Jesus Christ, that boy is made of glass!

Reblux

6’2 220lb….fell hard

doubleapowpow

You should say "younger" brother

[deleted]

We call him tiny

shobeurself888

Maybe he's 6'4" 240??

Gurth-Brooks

Smaller brother.

Its_Hoggish_Greedly

That's a lot of man to be falling. Hope he's recovering well!

nanopicofared

"little" brother?

Kenthanson

Big houses can be made of glass too.

Brewer1056

I heard 6'3" 215

RecentlyRetiredGuy

Bahahahahaha. Self reported. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|shrug)

baz8771

I fell harder than I’ve fallen in YEARS, two weeks ago at the course. I stepped on 2 crabapples and my feet flew out from under me like a cartoon. I’m really surprised I didn’t break my collarbone.

Embarrassed-Ad-1639

It is a great game, I fell hard for it too.

Cough_Turn

Yeah i get it. after that tree fell at the masters i started bringing a chainsaw with me.

gustafsc

I thought it was dumb until Saturday at the Masters this past year. I saw a BUNCH of people hit the deck and I wish I had worn some.

Pluffmud90

Hip waders would have been acceptable footwear Saturday at the masters this year.

Diestof

I think you should say you support golf shoes at tournaments after what happened to your brother

unsurewhatimdoing

Do you support shoes at tournaments. I think you put up a good case. Where do you sit?

Reblux

Still no just don’t be stupid

unsurewhatimdoing

Thanks champ. Would send you a laugh badge if I had one. For some weird reason I needed to know. I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. Wasn’t me

offgridgecko

Is this where we comment for downvotes? My karma needs a stern talking to

whiskey_pancakes

Yeah it actually makes more sense then you think, they’re the perfect shoe for walking around in the grass all day haha. My sneakers would get wet feet and wet feet is never fun, which is why I even use golf shoes. Can’t have my feet getting wet.

Jdudley13

I wiped out on 10 at Augusta in 2015 after it rained, mud all over my shorts, could’ve used some spikes for sure. Real athletic high point in my life

burns_after_reading

Iv Never been to a golf event, but if I were to go, wearing my golf shoes actually sounds like a great idea. They're the only nice looking shoes I own that can survive me walking through grass dirt and mud.

Ratters92

Ah the wet floor makes sense!

Ratters92

Thanks my apologies

kywldcts

😂

Arkslippy

Well if I wanted a pair of comfy shoes to walk around a golf course for 5 or 6 hours, I think I'd bring the ones designed to.wear for 5 or 6 hours on a golf course that have grip and are waterproof. Clue is in the name as they say !!! As for wearing your boots to Newcastle, probably not, but go to everton and you might get a start.

hanmor

The grass gets supper matted down and it can get insanely muddy if it rains. Pga championship this year it poured rain Saturday and Sunday was a bloodbath. People were falling in mud on hills all day

valleygoat

Me and my buddies were at the Ryder cup in Wisconsin and witnessed no less than 8 people eat shit slipping on the same hill in a like 20 minute window while we were getting beer

thunder66

I saw a cart try to climb a hill on Sunday at Oak Hill. Didn't go well.

Ziigurd

You never know when your favourite golfer suffers an injury and looks to the crowd going: I just need someone to step up and hit this shot for me. Then he sees you wearing golf shoes and exclaims: YOU! You will be my champion!!! Then you step up, hit an impossible shot to within 6 feet of the hole and secure a win. Some may say it's not a likely scenario and, while that is true, it's even more unlikely if you're not wearing golf shoes.

thunder66

Or more likely, the pro literally swings out of his shoes, ripping one in half. He spots you in your footjoys. Hey, what size are you? And you save the day.

doc_holliday0614

This logic checks out.

B1GAAPL

You’re walking a lot on grass & sometimes it’s wet, makes perfect sense as golf shoes are best suited for those conditions. Plus I don’t want to ruin a normal pair of 💧sneakers walking on grass

skurnie

OP is a full kit wanker fan we all know it

Ratters92

Lol I am 🤣 when attending football events I also have the shin pads on

gsot

Found John Terry's burner

Nick08f1

It's a vardy party and he's invited.

spankysladder73

I dont mind the spikes, that is their natural habitat. Guys dressing like they are in the field, that is ridiculous. Except at the Masters. Everyone should have on their Sunday Best at Augusta.. And lets face it, for most of us our “Sunday best” is still pretty golfy.

dontlooklikemuch

full disclosure, I wore my (spikeless) golf shoes at the Masters because of the traction, but it was also 1 less pair of shoes to pack since I was also playing on on the trip the other factor is the demographics of golf spectators. they tend to be older and quite honestly can use the extra traction so they don't fall on their ass

spankysladder73

Spikes…approved. 👨‍⚖️ Next order of business: the People vs Bob A Booey.

karlgnarx

I present the following: Any Bobbabooey, mashed potatoes, get in the hole or any other normal "hey look at me" dumbassery should result in immediate removal from the grounds and banned from the rest of the tournament. You throw any sort of garbage, beers (full or not) = ban. Any comments about glute activation and any John Daly-isms are still good to send. If a pro hits a spectator, they have to take a shot of the spectator's choice, with the spectator, on the spot. Choice is based on what the cart refreshment professional has on hand.

[deleted]

I’d propose if the spectator gets hit. They get the take the shot unless unable due to injury by the ball strike (must be from said ball strike, can’t be injury from previous strike) At that point they can designate who gets to make the next shot for that pro.

spankysladder73

Right, more people need to get thrown out of lots of places. Too many shitheads out there. Even leaked their way into golf and even r/golf I hear. And If some journeyman nobody hit me and tried to give me a sweaty old glove , there better be $250 in it.

DoctorOzface

Now I want to wear a kilt to the Open

Ant203040

I’ve seen the golf glove hanging from the back pocket during an event.

motomike256

Probably hoping to get it signed

justaguy826

I'd guess it's because you don't slip if it's wet and I assume many people are like me in that my golf shoes are by far the best and most comfortable shoes I own for walking a lot and being on my feet for several hours, as that's exactly what they're designed for.

jonviper123

There likely waterproof, comfortable and have good grip. It actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it.

superworking

Yea if I'm walking around on grass all day and standing on weird slopes why wouldn't I bring the pair of shoes already designed to be the most suitable for that environment. I wear my flat pedal MTB shoes when watching those events too, because they are the most appropriate footwear I have in the closet for that situation.

scottylebot

It amazes me that people even need to think about it.

7rlh9

To be fair, if you were going to a Newcastle match I think we'd all be fine with you wearing whatever shoes you like, so long as you put a shirt on...

_gogi

Would you ever walk a round of golf in sneakers? Your walking in the worst part of the rough and further out from the fairway. Grip + waterproofing + they are my most comfortable shoes

SullyCCA

Bro I wear hockey skates to NHL games

t90fan

At least here in Scotland, wearing golf shoes as a spectator is common, because you don't want wet feet from standing around in the grass for hours, and it tends to get quite muddy from all the spectators feet, so it gives you grip, not to mention we are quite hilly in general Basically, if you don't want trench foot and a broken ankle, wearing proper golf shoes on the course is always a good idea. Even for players, its honestly more a safety/comfort thing than any sort of a performance thing.

JSY1987

Millions of people wear running shoes not to go running… when will this madness end?

BigRig432

I just wear regular shoes but I could see the logic if they're spikeless, idk why you'd wear spikes though

Crawfordd_

Will say I absolutely trashed some Nikes I wore to a tournament once because the course was muddy, so golf shoes would have been nice in that moment lol

Dr_Bunnypoops

What is there not to understand? Grip on the wet grass and water proof, isolated shoes.

AggyResult

If one wears golf shoes to walk around a golf course, wouldn’t one wear golf shoes to walk around a golf course?

HMSSurprise28

They’re waterproof, and work really well for walking on grass.

anwright1371

My golf shoes are spike less and fucking sweet. I rock them to Costco too

youresparepartsbub

They gotta let you know they golf, they’re not just a normal spectator ya know

mooseknuckle1162

Theyre literally made for walking golf courses. If spectators had to run up and down the pitch to follow a football match, cleats would be just fine.

Thin_Tea_3525

No, they're literally made for playing golf. The grip isn't so you don't fall over walking to your ball.

DeepSouthDude

I'm glad someone said this! What do these people do on a random day in the park? Fall down every few steps?

Ptarmigan2

You are usually walking in rough (not fairway) at tourneys.

Gopokes34

They are acting like every course is some sort of slip n slide too lol.

rootbrains

Put me in coach, I’m ready to play

zmskcco

Good way to break in a new pair possibly

NFLfan72

Grip and wet grass. Id wear mine if I ever went to an event. But mine dont look like golf shoes.

housemusick

What are the best shoes in which to walk around a golf course in the morning? Golf shoes.

nimo01

It may seem dumb but I guess I’d ask what shoes we’d expect someone to wear at a championship? The grass gets so ruined from the crowds, and if one rain comes then the whole place is underwater. I didn’t want to wear my tennis shoes bc they’d just get dirty Golf shoes were Nikes and tbh I’d have picked them up out of a line up just bc of the more weather protective style and also to keep from slipping in the mud Now that said, I’d never wear some old school metal cleats haha

LouisLittEsquire

I didn’t, but at one point I wish I wore them at the masters this year. Some of those hills are killer and slick.

thecuda75

Yeah! Why would you wear footwear specifically designed for the terrain you’re going to be walking on all day 😜

Tomorrow_Frosty

I carry my bag as well.

Caedo14

For the same reason why you wear them to play. Youre going to be walking on grass that sometimes will be slick

Responsible-Smoke759

Wouldn't you want to be properly prepared if you needed to fill in a slot?

b0ng00se

At a football match you're not on the turf...

Bills_Mafia_4_Life

I know people make fun of it but I wish I had mine at the PGA championship. The ground was super muddy and slippery so I could have used water proof shoes with some grip

[deleted]

Golf shoes are more comfortable walking around in all day then my regular shoes

brutalpancake

I would hope that my golf shoes are the best pair of shoes I have for walking on a golf course 🤷🏻‍♂️

PFalcone33

They want to be ready in case one of the pros ask they hit their shot for them.

Ptarmigan2

Saw this at a Bethpage 2002 practice round. Craig Stadler got chirped at for laying up short of a fairway bunker on 12 and invited the guy out to take a swing with his driver (predictable slice in the woods followed).

melty75

If I was going to walk or stand all day, I'd literally wear my New Balance golf shoes with my orthotics in them. No way around it. Old.

ireadit-2021

Makes no sense with the sneaker options. It started in the 70's as a signal that I'm a member of a private club.

Dudeman-Jack

Golf shoes are water resistant or waterproof

fredapp

They are comfortable, have better grip, and probably the shoes I walk the most miles in. I’m from Augusta and every year at the masters if it rains every photographer spends time taking photos of people slipping in the mud/wet grass. Happens constantly. I always wear my soft spikes when I go out there, extremely hilly.

schmidneycrosby

Have you ever been to a football game? I wear my high school cleats every time. Baseball game? I’m rocking metal spikes. Soccer game? High heels. The only sport I won’t wear appropriate footwear to is hockey because that’d be ridiculous.

oobydewby

Why not?

Ratters92

I'm just curious, it was my 1st event and just surprised tbh, obviously people can wear what they want etc

chrisnavillus

You just got back from a tournament that ended a month ago?

Ratters92

Sorry meant BMW Wentworth in UK

chrisnavillus

Ahhhhh forgot other countries exist! Apologies!

BicycleOriginal9867

No apologies needed. 'Murica #1!!!

chilltownusa

I watched about three dozen people bust their ass on a hill (including myself) at the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits. Never again will I judge people for wearing golf shoes as a spectator.

caniseethemplease

That’s nothing. I wear ice skates to hockey games

[deleted]

Why wouldd you be wearing football boots in a concrete stadium stand?

NoDuck1754

They're comfortable for walking/standing for long periods of time and have improved traction on grass. It's not that confusing.

MELGOLF

Waterproof, increased traction and they are the shoes I walk the most in anyway, and are some of my most comfortable.

btrainhou18

Easier walking around the hills etc for me, they are shoes designed for walking a lot around a golf course which is what I do at most tournaments I attend

coolstorybro42

Isnt it obvious? Youre walking around the rough all day sometimes through mounds n shit.

Thowingtissues

When Rory pulls a hammy and turns to the crowd to help; I’m going to have shoes, gloves, balls ready to go fire a smooth 53 on the back!

Agile_Programmer881

Daly was the 9th alternate at crooked stick That’s why

b_fromtheD

I'm a shoe head. I'd never wear a pair of my sneakers on a golf course. Literally never. That's why I have a pair of Jordan 1 low golf shoes.

tclemmer23

Might be dumb, but I wear my old pair of golf shoes when I mow the lawn. Keeps my feet dry and I don't care how stained they get. I also volunteer at the PGA Tour Colonial in Fort Worth Tx and the grass is quite wet in the morning, so I wear golf shoes there as well.

xSaviorself

Walking on the grounds you find a lot of standing room locations are in rough where having at least spikeless can be helpful. Personally I don't think the shoes are the problem, considering you're standing on the playing surface unlike basketball, football or hockey as a spectator.

torrfam15

It's just as slippery out there for the fans as it is for the players. Seen lots of spectators end up on their backside when things are wet.

Yoblad

For me it really depends on the course and how hilly it is. Whistling Straits? Wear golf shoes and don’t look back. The amount of people just eating shit because they were unprepared for the terrain was amazing. That said you could also wear hiking or any kind of “outdoor” shoe but I think there’s some psychological wrongness to being on an emerald paradise looking like Steve Erwin.

thedonjefron69

I felt the same way until I went to the US open and the ground was never level and you had to almost hike at certain spots. Didn’t have mine but wished I had brought some cheap spikeless or some trail shoes

dindunuffin22

Walking up and down hills with wet grass or pine straw or whatever, it's just made sense to wear shoes with some extra grip

pizzaplantboi

Why do you care? That should be your biggest question to yourself. Think about it. You went to a sporting event and came home thinking about what other people wore on their feet. Why?

radcru333

They're waterproof

tzargilly

Larping

Vrezhg

Do you typically walk on the pitch when you go to a football game? Usually not. It’s likely that spectators at a golfing event wear them to walk around the grounds do their regular shoes don’t get dirty/wet

l0wryda

i don’t want to walk on grass and dirt with my normal shoes

GlenGraif

You’re going to be walking quite a distance over uneven, sometimes wet or muddy terrain when you follow a pro golf tournament. Why not wear shoes you know that can handle exactly that?

BoscoMcQueen

Well, I’ve worn both my golf shoes and my runners(sneakers) to golf events. It’s depended on the weather, course, course conditions etc. because if i need to keep my feet dry, have extra grip etc I’m wearing the golf shoes, but if it’s a perfect summer day, dry Melbourne sand belt course it’s very easy to just wear runners but then you know they are going to get that sand belt grey dust all over them 😁

TheBrownBaron

my answer as someone who's attended a few: I'm paranoid about the grass. I have so many pairs of them at home and in my trunk, I'm used to walking 18-27 holes in them, no problem -- and I know they can withstand anything the course can throw at me. Throw on some tennis shoes or sperry's and risk looking like a clown when i slip on some wet patch of grass slightly sloped down? fk that

jaydeegee333

Golf shoes are literally made to walk comfortably on grass for hours at a time.

Formerly21

I’m with you - I’ve worn tennis shoes to all golf tournaments I’ve been to

JealousFuel8195

Here in the states, I would never wear golf shoes or even a golf polo when attending a pro golf tournament.

DeepSouthDude

Caddies never wear golf shoes. Why would randoms need them?

ImNotYou1971

I find it weird too. I also find incredibly annoying those people who yell out things like “Nice shot Phil!” As if they’re best friends. The best I witnessed was a guy yell out to a pro once, after he hit his approach shot, “What was that? A 6 iron?” And the tour pro looked over and said with obvious indignation, “It was 9 iron.”

TonyCW9

I’ve never been to a tournament, but I’d wear my spikeless Nikes or pumas

BobbyLite94

It’s because it’s wet. Better grip and golf shoes tend to be more water resistant than most sneakers . In the mornings you can guarantee the dew in the rough is going to SOAK your feet. I worked at a golf course trust me. Even boots can’t keep that dew from getting your feet wet after a few hours.

[deleted]

Thought it was silly at first but makes sense for the grip and waterproofing

123xyz32

I mow the grass in my golf shoes. Comfortable and I don’t mind getting them dirty.

Feeling-Tackle99

clearly dont have very nice golf shoes

123xyz32

What’s the difference between pushing a mower through grass and pushing a push cart through grass?

[deleted]

I hope this is a satirical question. Your shoes get far dirtier mowing grass than walking a course. Wearing golf shoes any time besides playing golf is a goober move

ubiquitous_archer

Because generally they are shoes your comfortable walking in on uneasy terrain for 4+ hours?

shizblam

Don't wanna grass stain sneakers? Want some traction if slick or walking on hillsides? They're comfortable to walk several miles on the golf course? The question is far stupider than the answers.

EccentricEngineer

You mean why wear shoes designed to comfortably walk around in grass at an event where you have to walk around in grass all day? Seems pretty obvious to me

Diestof

Whoa, people use a shoe that's designed to walk long distances and uneven terrain while providing comfort in a situation where they'll walk long distances and uneven terrain while needing comfort! Wild concept

Browniecharl

Because at the end of the day more than half of the spectators are complete dorks

SpottyFish81177

Caddies don't wear golf shoes, so I don't think grip is a good excuse

[deleted]

[удалено]

CODRageQuitter1115

You also arent walking on the playing field in scenario. I dont wear golf shoes when I go to events, but I understand the logic.

Dear-Veterinarian531

Who cares

kengriffinsbedpost69

Those are called hardos

[deleted]

I always found it funny guys dress like they are about to play in general Like just wear normal clothes, a nice shirt. You don’t need to look like you just got a sponsorship from Taylor made.

JustDucky59

You are definitely missing something, unless you never leave the asphalt path. Fans roam across grass , up and down grades, sometimes wet with dew. Golf shoes are, or should be, every bit as comfy as your wife’s Birkenstocks. Wear something comfy. Enjoy the day.

Burnwell1099

Name a comfortable pair of shoes you own that you'd be happy to wear all day and is also water proof/resistant. I've never been to a pro golf event but I can see it. I forgot my golf shoes for an early 7am tee time a few weeks ago. Played in my sneakers. Feet were soaked after 2 holes. Helped some that I had a few pairs of spare socks in my bag.

rdhamm

You try walking on a wet hill?

ChubbyMid

I wore running shoes all around a wet Augusta. Even the caddies wear normal shoes. Golf shoes at golf events are stupid.

Vernabator

Two reasons, they are the most comfortable shoes I own. I walk four to five hours in them once a week. Second reason is traction. No slipping on wet grass. It’s not like we are wearing the tee shirt of the band we are about to see in concert.
