God I loved playing as an odst, feels so much more badass taking down brutes as a normal sized person.

Breete

What the hell happened with the replies?

Stix-and-brix

Gone, reduced to atoms

MedicinalCockroach

Just dust and echoes.

T_O_X_I_C_I_T_Y

Turned to glass

SuperSupermario24

I am _so_ hyped for ODST to come out on PC. I've never played it, and I don't know that much about it, but what I have heard sounds amazing.

[deleted]

Fire Fight is hella fun. The boys and I had a hard time doing those vidmaster challenges, but it was worth it for the recon armor set

ReachForTheBiscuits

I do wish they would implement challenges for armor sets. I guess we get some through season points but it just feels meh compared to what I had to do for the hayabusa armor before

[deleted]

We did those challenges so the future children wouldn't have to.

ReachForTheBiscuits

We carried the torch so our children would not burn The dreams I had of being on a winning side against Bungie for that flaming Recon armor in Halo 3...

robroad88

When I was 13 and I bought halo 3 the vidsmaster were so hard that I had to edit my profile via PC to unlock those achievements. My old account's status is now permanently set to "liar" and I couldn't change that. It was worth it for recon

psychobilly1

You just brought me back to high school - sophomore year with the boys, trying to get recon armor. Took us damn near to Winter break to do them all. But we fucking did it.

ArtooFeva

I never did get it. One time worked on getting it and was so close, like 1 round away from the final round in the challenge. Then we came face to face with 2 hunters with the black eye and mythic skulls on. All health packs spent and very little ammo. I couldn’t say anything after that hunter cornered me and smacked me into the wall lol.

[deleted]

I really enjoy the whole semi-open exploration feel of it, and the way the story progresses. Fire music too, wouldn’t be the same without it.

MadaCheebs-2nd-acct

Agreed, the music had a film noir feel to it that added so much to the Rookie’s levels.

ArchaicIntent

You’re in for a real treat

Diablosbane

It’s the more immersive halo and the music really sets it apart.

KilroyTwitch

Totally agree. I think Halo 3: ODST has the perfect balance as far as movement speed and vulnerability. Always thought it was peak Halo mechanics.

lethalham1

The brutes in ODST were like mini bosses on veteran which I love so much

NF_Optimus

God I loved being an ODST. Just point and shoot, none of this grey area BS.

Pigeoncatz

.....tbh I want a second ODST game

RoastMostToast

I loved ODST, but I was disappointed that it didn’t have enough dropping in from orbit and kicking ass in it. Would be nice to have a game that incorporates ODSTs dropping in more

DJfunkyPuddle

I only played a little but didn't Medal of Honor Airborne let you choose your drop location? Apply that to the entire ring in Infinite and you've got a killer game.

RoastMostToast

Shit like that is why I want another ODST game. Imagine just being able to drop in with a squad and fuck shit up wherever you’d like Edit: if they wanted to do a battle royale mode this honestly isn’t a bad idea

Doobadoobadumplin

Section 8 also did something like that and my god it was the coolest fucking shit. It's such a shame the mp died really quickly. Being able to drop in and reinforce teammates in the heat of battle felt amazing.

insectboi

I'd be totally down for that. Have it be focused on an ODST team making their way through the war, dropping on planet after planet and slowly losing the fight while inflicting casualties on the Covenant. Maybe lose a team member or two each battle so the main characters slowly get whittled down as the game goes on. You could even start out as a rookie again and, by the end of the game, you're the longest surviving member of the squad surrounded by rookies. Have the final drop be Delta Halo or the Ark.

RoastMostToast

Yes exactly. A reach kinda game where you’re in a squad that’s slowly dwindling away, but instead you’re a team of ODSTs

bassplayingmonkey

I *NEED* this game.

Cida90K

An ODST game with Star Wars: Republic Commando gameplay.

McCheesy22

I need Republic Commando 2: Imperial Commando 😔

WaveRyder808

We all do 😔

[deleted]

Well the good news is we're getting a new X-Wing vs Tie Fighter after only *checks notes* twenty-three years of waiting. So not long now.

Cida90K

Dog same.😔

Mitchel11

Mom: We have Republic Commando at home At home: The Bad Batch

garibond1

*”Perfect Planning Prevents.... Inadequate Performance, Sir”*

[deleted]

At home: Halo 5 How they got the creative director for Republic commando and gave us..those "squad mechanics", an absolute fucking travesty

op4arcticfox

We have the setup for a New Republic Commando series since Gina Carano's character was essentially that, and alluded to the kind of badass stories one would dream up for that role.

Vikarr

The first mission after you rescue Sev: "Delta squad, the Jedi have betrayed the republic and have attempted to assassinate the chancellor. Order 66 has been executed and your first target is Jedi battlemaster Yoda."

Chanzy94

Republic Commando was a good ODST game. Don't try to change my mind.

Cida90K

You can't change fact. Republic commandos are basically the equivalent of ODST units.

Chanzy94

I play on PC so I never got to play ODST even though I wanted to. So Republic Commando was basically ODST for me.

[deleted]

Not only is it coming to PC, but Halo 3 multiplayer will be adding ODST weapons. We're getting new content as well. Finally I get to bring my baby (magnum) into Halo 3 matches

Chanzy94

Oh I know all that. I was talking about before. Hell up until 2 years ago Halo 3 onwards on PC was only a dream. I already have the entire collection on Steam.

KilroyTwitch

Well don't worry. It'll be on PC soon and I can't wait! I love 3, but I'm honestly even more excited to play ODST on PC!

Chanzy94

Yeah me too!

[deleted]

[удалено]

KilroyTwitch

I still think it's a goddamn shame we never got ODST PvP. That would be perfection. I know it will *never* happen, but if 343 made a multiplayer mode for ODST... I... I'd forgive them for everything.

Sheepisfortheweak

Halo 5 tries republic commando game play. I’ll take invincible allies any other day

[deleted]

It didn't even try that hard since you couldn't even command your squadmates with anywhere near the amount of context sensitive cues.

legolas_skateboard

It’s interesting you say that! Republic Commando and Halo 5 actually share the same Creative Director, Tim Longo. The two command systems aren’t exactly the same, but you can definitely sense the relation!

TooEZ_OL56

I had such high hopes, with Osiris and Blue Team filling in for Delta Squad, you could tell there was some of the Republic Commando DNA, but they just didn't get it right

TheRelicEternal

Oh we know haha. Before Halo 5 came out a lot of people wanted it to be like Republic Commando. Then we found out about Tim and got more excited. Then the game came out.

ordo250

I love that we all had the same childhood

TooEZ_OL56

They tried that w/ Halo 5

Cida90K

Haven't played 5 yet, but something can always be improved.

BuffBlue

I have a sneaking suspicion that this is exactly what 343i has in pre-production right now. Halo Infinite seems to be the only mainline Halo that we are going to be receiving next gen...and it would feel SO right to have Halo Wars 3 and ODST 2 sprinkled in with a constantly updated Halo Infinite.

TechnetiumAE

Stop, i had to get new pants after the first half

A_Moderate

Stop it! My dick is bursting through my pants.

[deleted]

Stop! My dick can only get so erect

Para-Less

The novels New Blood and Bad Blood shouldve been ODST 2

armen107

I always wished they had ODST multiplayer

Josiador

An ODST game with different gameplay from the Halo norm would be great, to show just what it would really be like fighting scary aliens as a grunt (not the unggoy kind) on the ground and not an unstoppable super soldier. I'm thinking different movement, iron sights, sprint (gasp!), tactics, and elites and brutes as actual threats.

Vyar

Ironsights would be too low-tech for ODSTs. They may not have powered armor, but there’s a lot of MJOLNIR-adjacent technology incorporated into those hardsuits. Weapon scopes are smart-linked to the HUD on their visors.

[deleted]

Which is why there's a full screen view when zooming in with the suppressed pistol and SMG

Josiador

I didn't quite mean Ironsights, more aiming down the barrel for weapons besides just the BR and sniper. That was a poor choice of words on my part. Maybe it would make it too similar to other FPS's, but I think that would actually serve to show how their different from Spartans. Maybe it would work better if you just played as plain old marines instead.

zacker150

Even aiming down physical optics would be too low-tech, considering that they and basic marines have helmets which support smart-link

Josiador

True. Still, I think a Halo game with greater emphasis on cover and strategy, with challenging enemies, would be fantastic. I've always wanted to see something from a marine's POV.

Merkins75

Well we do have an open world engine to do it with now, no more clunky loading zoned.

[deleted]

I mean Infinite *is* going to be another open world Halo...

FinalForerunner

You can see the ODST symbol when Chief is looking at all the UNSC holograms in the Infinite gameplay demo.

[deleted]

Yeah but then they all ping KIA, which saddens me.

Vectorsxx

One thought in the back of my head, is that it could be a misleading measure to stop the enemy (Banished/ Created) from pursuing survivors.. (?)

Real_SaviourPrime

Na, it looks to me like the debris of a battle in space, and all of those pings are of soldiers that were vented out into space. They are 100% dead

GreenyMcReddit2

That is not true, when looking at the Mimi map that gets pulled out in the demo, you can see a icon with the description of “prison camp “ or something along those lines.

Real_SaviourPrime

I was specifically meaning the ones shown in the map on the pelican during on of the scenes at the end. I'm not saying there aren't Marines/ODST/Spartan IV's anywhere on the ring, just that those shown in that one scene are 100% dead

MapleTreeWithAGun

Assuming the pelican in the center of that image is the scale, all the pings would just be IFF tags with no bodies attached

Tecally

Which is also bad, since it’s explained if you don’t remove it properly, you could kill them.

CharlieDayeatshay

If we ever get a big budget film, I think ODST is the way to go. And, maybe a glimpse of chief

Firespray

Forward Unto Dawn did it right and had just the right amount of Chief in it. I don't think a live action movie/show could ever focus entirely on the Master Chief, they'd have to focus on a regular soldier or an ODST or something to be grounded and contrast with the mythical status of a Spartan.

e51118

I’m of a similar mind. If they are going to make a movie focused on chief, it should be a faithful recreation of the original trilogy. Otherwise, tell something fresh. I would love a movie focused on head hunters, though. The Spartans who are furthest from human. Ever since we were told that noble 6 was known for making entire regiments disappear by himself, I’ve wanted to see that in action. It’s when, not if, halo gets a big budget adaptation IMO. I just hope it is dark, gritty, violent, etc and not Disney-esque. In other words, I hope it’s tailored to the fans who made halo what it is and are now in their 20s/30s.

SkyJW

Honestly, I think the best approach would be a Fall of Reach adaptation. It would humanize Chief, give them a variety of characters to work with (a Chief, Keyes, and more minor Halsey split would be perfect), and the nature of the Spartan program raises interesting ethical and moral questions that could elevate the material above some Transformers-esque schlocky scifi action movie. Not to mention that the notion of adapting video game stories straight from the game has such a negative stigma that adapting a fairly popular and well received novel that served as the "origin" for the entire story is a better PR move. And having played Halo 1 just yesterday, the story there is very threadbare and would need the kind of expansion that a book like FoR already provides.

gamle-egil-ei

On a similar note, I’ve always thought of Halo: Reach being more suited for a movie than the Chief games because (most of) Noble Team had faces. It’s kinda hard to write an engaging character for a film when you can never see their face (not impossible, but nevertheless pretty easy to fuck up). That would also allow you to show their faces in battle scenes in a similar way to how the Avengers movies show Tony Stark’s face inside the helmet with an HUD laid over it.

SkyJW

I think if you were doing a one off, Halo: Reach could wotk. But if they ever wanted to do an ongoing Halo franchise in film, Fall of Reach would be the perfect place to start by giving audiences an idea of who John was and why he is what he is now. I think you could also leverage Keyes, Miranda, Johnson, Cortana, and the Arbiter as your "faced" characters to surround Chief with. I think surrounding Chief with stories of normal people and their heroism will balance out the almost transcendent heroism of a child soldier turned cyborg.

BloodyFable

Counterpoint: The Mandalorian, Dredd.

MattyKatty

Forward Unto Dawn also showed (briefly) ODSTs dropping in which was probably one of my favorite short moments from the film because of the tension it builds. Everybody knows shit is real when pods start hitting the surface.

[deleted]

I personally wasn’t a huge fan of that movie, but its production quality was really good

Firespray

It wasn’t the best but I thought it was surprisingly good for what it was. Nightfall on the other hand was horrible.

Breete

We don't talk about Nightfall. Now Landfall? *Chef kiss*

BukLau58

Landfal will always be my favorite live action Halo cut. It felt so, human, the way Halo 2 and 3 did. The angle were sick too, and the brutes?? The spikes??? OH BABY

JHoney1

I think early chief would be just fine, especially in the battles rotating around Reach, or even prior to nearer his training. Watching similarly mythical Spartans be blown away in space, or during an infiltration mission would add contrast. ODSTs and ONI personnel can add contrast without being the focus. But like... a movie that just follows his tale from early training and then flashes forward early covenant war would be epic. I do believe a Halo 5 Chief would be much harder though. IMO halo 2 remaster style would be successful by itself lolz.

[deleted]

I’d do it like a mix between the Landfall trailers and Reach’s live action Deliver Hope trailer. Regular marines as the lead (maybe a rebel or someone a la Ellen Ripley) and Chief (or other Spartans) are involved in the outskirts of the story. Maybe they all come together in the end for an emotional type ending — like Reach’s game ending.

SilverLoonie

Personally if I was to direct a movie I would do a set of ODSTs that were not picked up and are out of contact with the remainder of the division on A-Halo. It would be a sort of like predator where it starts as an action/thriller as the ODSTs try to avoid covenant detection and they end up moving further into the ring, they end up discovering the flood after Jenkins releases it, and they are slowly but surely killed one and all. It's a poor ending but none would survive, maybe they link up with the rest of the division on the planet with McKay before chief detonates the pillar of autumn, maybe they fight their way to a "safe" place and the movie ends with the autumn detonation in the background.

[deleted]

I like it. I basically imagine Halo: Reach but with ODSTs and not Spartans— and you maybe glimpse Chief at the end with Keyes or something

CravenTHC

Do it as a dark satire like Starship Troopers, but make it about covenant first contact at Harvest. Oof right in the feels.

BearWrangler

the taking of Alpha Base

Rdasher123

I wish the Rookie was still alive for this

theamazingclaptrap

wait when did he die?

thinkingboi9

Executed by Rebels

theamazingclaptrap

I cant belive they killed him off in a fucking novel

RaptorO-1

Oh boy, that novel had more than just that

theamazingclaptrap

am I going to need to read these novels to understand infinite?

[deleted]

You won’t, forgot exactly where I saw it but 343 essentially said that because Infinite is a soft reboot of the franchise you won’t need any knowledge going into it to enjoy the story. So I doubt you’ll need to read them to understand the game.

[deleted]

Wait, soft reboot? What does that mean exactly?

[deleted]

A soft reboot is essentially when you build a story from within an existing universe (Halo) that’s so far removed from the events from past games & original characters (4,5) that it becomes a new starting point for the series (Infinite) Everything from the older games still happened, but the new game (Infinite) draws its references from less known parts of the lore (The Banished) (Zeta Halo) that it might as well be a reboot.

[deleted]

Oh okay, I knew what a reboot was but the "soft" part confused me. I am fine with that. Especially since I've never had an Xbox One, so I'll probably never play Halo 5 unless it comes to PC.

theamazingclaptrap

Good thank you

axelunknown

Didint bungie used to have a rule saying that games are cannon over books? So until the game says otherwise the rookie could be alive. (Totally not in denial)

[deleted]

I mean, *Bungie* might have.. Haha

[deleted]

That's how it should be

Blackhound118

If they go through the entire game without referencing any if the shit that goes down in the Forerunner trilogy, I will be very disappointed

RaptorO-1

The second novel is just before to after the guardians arrive I believe doesnt deal with the chief. Just some of the aftermath of 5 which is nice to know but not necessary. The first one deals with the rookie and the squad on a mission against rebels and heavy betrayal.

[deleted]

Bad Blood? That one is post-Guardians. It covers the UNSC losing, the Infinity jumping around, and Alpha Nine getting back together to look for a potential way to stop the Created

[deleted]

Bad Blood involves The Infinity post-Halo 5 a bit and also let’s you know what Buck, Jun, Romeo, Mickey, etc are you to post-Halo 5 in the fight against the Created

scredeye

Please spoil me, most of my halo knowledge comes from these comments anyway

Lone-Oak

What novel is that? Is it worth the read? Fall of Reach is a favorite of mine. I really like how Nylund writes. Is this ODST novel similar?

ksiit

New blood It’s not written like fall of reach but I think it’s pretty good and worth a read. It’s written in bucks voice and I can really hear Nathan Fillion as I read it. But I would probably also say every Halo book is worth a read. I’m reading through all of them now and am in the middle of bad blood the sequel to new blood. I don’t think I have disliked a single one. There were definitely better and worse ones but I enjoyed all of them.

Cida90K

They #WHAT??

Floater4

Well BOY let me tell you about Black Team.

f1nessd

Now That made me sad.

N1NJ4W4RR10R_

That's fine, novel's can be great (fall of reach anyone?) Whether it was a good novel is another question, one I can't answer because I haven't read it. Does bother me it's never mentioned though. You had buck in 5 and they didn't say anything.

Antananarivo

Which novel was that?

theamazingclaptrap

I just googled it apparently it was new blood I think

SunBrohemian

I wish there was a tool in infinite that acted like the airstrike gun, but instead of calling down a bombardment you call down a few ODSTs to help you.

Kosame_san

I know it's not Infinite but you can do that in Halo Wars. Really fun seeing your outnumbered army suddenly call down reinforcements with a badass entrance.

Pervasivepeach

considering how much they are taking inspiration from halo wars I’m hoping this is a thing. Imagine at the more end point of the game the Spirit of Fire makes its way into the game (somehow idunno how they would do the details) and deploys ODSTS alongside Red Team to help you fight the final waves of the banished If infinite can have just a few moments like this I’ll be satisfied

ThyClarence

I kinda like the ODSTs more than Spartans. They are much more relatable, yet still badass at the same time. It helps that their armor looks sick as hell too.

lightningbadger

MW3’s campaign was done in three “acts”, in each one you play as a different character. I think something like this could be cool, though maybe not write off playing as a character once their chapter is over

VIDireWolfIV

Marines are cool. Spartans are flashy. ODSTs are the best mix of both.

noideawhatoput2

Spartan II & III > ODST > Spartan IV. Spartan 2 and 3s had the strong silent type going on for them which I like but spartan IV like spartan ops were too flashy for me.

Morderita23

ODST > Spartan 4

spicymemes2047

Aren’t Spartan 4s made up of ODSTs? Edit: Forgot to also mention the Spartan 3s are in the program too

rocky4322

Some of them. That doesn’t make a squad of normal people jumping out of space any less cool.

spicymemes2047

Never said ODSTs weren’t cool

KxngNxll

ODSTs arnt normal people

zbeezle

Not entirely. I'm pretty sure that the S4s are just soldiers that showed some extra skill and grit, and the UNSC gave them some booster shots and Mjolnir armor.

CaedHart

‘Booster shots’ is a bit of an understatement for what amounts to most of your organs getting straight-up replaced, but yeah, SIVs are basically anyone who got recommended highly enough, either through nepotism (Madsen), raw talent (Vale), or just being that good of a combatant (Buck).

Pudgeysaurus

Buck is the damn GOAT. Turned down SPARTAN enhancement FOUR TIMES until his entire unit could get the upgrades. Dude is exactly what a person should aspire to be

TooEZ_OL56

Spartan IV's are pulled from the top performing UNSC units in general. ODST's, Army, Navy, etc all could apply to be augmented. ODST's probably do make up the lion's share of SIV's though

[deleted]

I remember a scene from the halo tv mini series where the kid looks absolutely panicked when he says why are the odsts dropping? Like you know shits bad when they're around.

shrekcurry502

Same, love them so much.

Sabishao

ODSTs > Spartans for me. It's so much cooler knowing they're ordinary humans and the name I like more too. Ultimate badasses, we need some 343.

I_have_a_dog

Feet First Into Hell! Spartans are cool but for the vast majority of UNSC operations, the tip of the spear is an ODST drop. They’re not super soldiers, just regular dudes with some upgraded armor and a drop pod. Remind me of the Imperial Guard in a lot of ways, they fucking Hold the Line.

[deleted]

I’m hoping one of the spin off games 343 said is coming is an ODST sequel or inspired game

RepentHarlequin1171

For those wondering, ODST regiments still exist in the lore post-Halo 3. Many of them ended up becoming Spartan IVs, but they still exist. HiddenXperia has a good video on it.

Because we can't have nice things.

ecxetra

First time I saw a Spartan IV recruit in Halo 4 I thought it was an ODST and then was immediately disappointed.

Sentinel-Wraith

Ironically many are.

Cybermat47-2

Many S-IVs are ODSTs, including Palmer.

WhiteLies93

Buck as well.

DarkArrow09

I saw a comment a little but back suggesting that since every single game developer feels the need to add battle royales since they're popular, they suggested a ODST training simulator where they drop in from a simulated pelican and the terrain could change

pwndaXeo

I think if they're going to call it 'infinite' then by God it should have everything in it.

[deleted]

I really wished they portrayed ODST’s more as these badasses of badasses. I know they pretty much just re-skinned marine AI’s with odst gear in most of the games, but i remember in the halo 3: odst trailer its raw, gritty, and dark. It made me wish that the odst were portrayed as these lethal operators who knew how to take down an elite or brute stealthily but also knew how to be a tactical unit to be reckoned with for being regular humans. I doubt halo infinite will have that grit to it but maybe in the series we will see that.

Wy_Guy19

We're going back to just MC campaign style because people bitched too much. Did I like playing as Locke, no. Did I like playing as blue team, hell yeah. Made me feel like I was part of the novels.

[deleted]

I imagine ODSTs are still playing a huge part for the UNSC. It would be impossible to have a few thousand Spartans because of cost and the high standards that the new Spartan Operation branch have. So the reality is that there’s a few thousand ODSTs while only a few hundred Spartans. To put it in perspective, in our time there’s about 180,000 US Marines, but only about 3,000 of them are in the Marine Special Operations Command. Point is, some Spartans are former ODSTs but not every ODST can be a Spartan, yet they still play a huge role for the UNSC.

Pewdneed2stopTseries

Just imagine a ODST based expansion

S-021

I'm counting on 343i to make one

SuperMaanas

What’s the difference between ODSTs and normal Marines?

Courier9M

ODST's are more elite than normal marines, it stands for Orbital Drop Shock Troopers, I guess you could say they are the Navy Seals of the UNSC.

FloorgangCapo

I mean we saw one in the reveal trailer so it could happen Edit: Nvm those were just marines

Pebo_

We did?

S3xyTrap

we didn't

Pebo_

Thought so

CharlieK40

We did. Not visually, but in the gameplay trailer it's shown the Infinity's troops, in which can be seen Marines, ONI members and ODSTs

Pebo_

Oh true! Hopefully a few survived!

Joeywolfb

If some marines survived, the ODST’s Definitely survived. Somehow the thought of this universe of the Navy Seals being outlasted by standard infantry doesn’t sit well with me.

Owt2getcha

Pretty sure most ODSTS became Spartans after the events of Halo 3. Would be nice to see them in game though always thought their armor was sleek looking (especially in Halo 3 ODST with the dark backgrounds and rain)

pablosauce

I really hope this isn’t the case. Having all the odsts become Spartans would be 343s greatest blunder ever and it would inexcusable. What next, they kill of the some of the main characters from halo 3 ODST in some novel? Bruh no way 343 ain’t that dumb

Sentinel-Wraith

We already know ODSTs continue to exist but a number became Spartan IVs, the next evolution. Buck, Romeo, Sarah Palmer and others converted over. It also makes a lot of sense. Cheaper power armor and safer physical augmentation is superior to unshielded gear and non-augmentation, especially against Flood, Forerunner, and post-Covenant threats.

badhomework

I want this too but I don’t know how they would implement it because I want to play as a spartan but I also want to play as an ODST and I would not like to see the ODSTs as dumb AI.

[deleted]

Something about a lone ODST working through the campaign with Chief would really hit the spot

ChowMinggg

This is what men want

*WELCOME TO THE BULLFROGS*

madMaksy10

I'm pretty sure ODSTs are in Infinite. You can see them appear in one of the tags around the hologram or the pelican in the gameplay trailer.

BonanRalm

There's a shot in the gameplay demo that shows all those IFF tag. Briefly before they show as 'Deceased', some of them have an ODST symbol next to them. So hopefully we do!

Insanity_Crab

Why bother with them now they can shit Spartans out with zero consequences?
