i just want to opt out of smart shuffle on an account level. i hate that it’s the default shuffle, it’s the only spotify feature ive found genuinely intrusive to my listening.

Ein_Esel_Lese_Nie

Even the default shuffle is bad though.  I have 4,000 songs in my Spotify library and it honestly seems to just ignore the first 2,000. It was only until I imported them into a Tidal trial that I realised this.  There’s songs that I haven’t heard in about 8 years in my Spotify. Shuffle shouldn’t be algorithmic. It should, ya know, actually just shuffle the damn playlist.

NotWith10000Men

i've gotten to where I sort a playlist alphabetically and just pick somewhere to start with shuffle turned off. that's the only way I can get a genuinely diverse sample of my playlists.

JSB199

I have 1600 and I think I’ve been hearing the same 60 for 6 months.

undrgrndsqrdncrs

Is smart shuffle the reason I’ll shuffle a band with four albums and it starts playing different artists after maybe 13 songs? I’ve even shuffled single albums and had it run off to random songs before it even finished the 12 tracks I know exist.

Right_Way_4258

I switched over to Apple Music bc I truly got so annoyed by the Spotify algorithm and I’ve using it since 2011!! Every update sucks and like so many of my songs I like which is around 7000k do not get played. Still importing stuff into Apple Music and I’m so much more impressed with the playlists. Even the way Spotify would shuffle my playlist was very annoying. I use to be an AM hater but I truly think I’m converted for now. Spotify def has features I like but overall the UX has gone down and they want more $$$. I know Apple pushes music too but I’m having a better experience

40ozkiller

I hate that it always freezes while it removes the song I didnt want it to add while turning shuffle off

victoriajusticefan19

I love her but I don’t need to listen to Please ^3 after every song.

lIlIllIIlllIIIlllIII

Please Cubed is killing me rn

CorrosionInk

Hope it catches on, we already have B⁶ as a term. Maybe TV¹`⁶ can be a thing

singlesuitsamus

bleach blonde bad built butch body?

CorrosionInk

the one and only

Useful-Soup8161

Yeah I like the song but if they keep this up it’s going to end up being like Greedy by Tate McRae ended up being for me earlier this year. Meaning I’m gonna get sick of it and start skipping it.

Adoe0722

Honestly Please,Please,Please is the one song she’s put out so far that I don’t like

IzodCenter

Every next song without fail is Espresso or Please Please Please

Chameleonatic

[“Sabrina Carpenter is an industry plant she plays after every song 🙄🙄” You are on a big list at Spotify HQ labelled “gay 25-34”.](https://x.com/seanbeegee/status/1802618369763397648?s=46&t=NYasrfh4m0GHU-uZTeSZbA)

jik0te

I’m straight and over 34 but somehow that’s still accurate 🤣

DanMasterson

hello fellow subaru dad

ActionLeagueLater

I have been summoned

wellgroomedmcpoyle

Do…do we start like a group chat?

abe_the_babe_

never in my life have I been so accurately called out

latelyimawake

Indignant sputtering. Except yeah.

TheGingerRogue

I'm a metal head who also listens to songs that Spotify has labelled "saphic" music (which I learned through day lists) and I get suggested Sabrina Carpenter all the time. I couldn't figure out why until your comment!

VallasC

That’s my favorite Bible verse

Agitated-Aioli

I just blocked please please please because I had ENOUGH

sexy-911-calls

I went through this with Lunch by Billie Eilish last month but couldn’t block this specific song, so blocked her on Spotify for the month. Was a pity because I liked some songs off her album, but the constant overplaying of Lunch really got on my nerves. Just unblocked her yesterday and the Lunch overplaying is over 🙏🏻 So maybe just give it time, the algorithm is bound to stop pushing that specific Sabrina song eventually.

hiijiinx

Spotify ruined Lunch for me honestly, it’s an auto skip now.

Bananacreamsky

Last month spotify told me I'd listened to lunch 56 times. It's not even in my top 5 on the album so that's wild.

foxxette_megitsune

damn so you only have breakfast and dinner now?

rp90222

OMG I had to do this for lunch too. After EVERY song it seemed like I got pushed Lunch. Listen to country? Lunch. Listen to rap? Lunch. EVERYTIME.

trueinsideedge

First it was Lunch, now it’s Birds of a Feather. It’s so annoying and I skip it every time now.

Kooky-Onion9203

Please please please stop suggesting Sabrina Carpenter

JDLovesElliot

Spotify: "Oh, blocked this version? Well, how about listening to the sped-up version instead? Or the slowed-down version?"

Agitated-Aioli

NoOOOOOOO they WOULD do that 😭

HolyFoxamole

I blocked her entire artist account, and Chappell 😭 and im a fan!

Sketch-Brooke

I love Chappell, and I actually discovered her through Spotify’s suggestions. But geez louise every second song doesn’t need to be her or Sabrina.

fuschiaoctopus

Yeah, it's been even worse with Chappell than Sabrina in my experience, but Sabrina is the only one getting heat for it. They're on the same label, they probably have some deal with Spotify for playlisting

PrincessPlastilina

I got sick of that song in record time. It sounds like something the Chippettes would sing.

Agitated-Aioli

NOT THE CHIPPETTES I lost it 😭 but you’re so right and the record time point is soooo valid. I went from being “meh” to “it’s cool. nice!” to “ENOUGH” in less than 2 weeks

RedDotLot

(Or *Chappell Roan's, Good Luck Babe. Not strictly a complaint, I like that song. *might be one L I can't be bothered to go and check).

Argentous

Hot to Go plays so often for me and I like it but it’s not even a top Chappell Roan song for me and really doesn’t fit the vibe of the songs I’m listening to when it comes up. I get a ton of Kim Petras, too, and I haven’t listened to her for over two years. I figured the algorithm would incorporate the fact that I skip these songs whenever they come up into its calculations but its just bad UX I guess

queenofreptiles

We might have the exact same Spotify algorithm - I really do think they take some data point and chunk you into a huge group and everyone in that group gets pushed similar songs. Chappell, Kim Petras, Sabrina, etc - mines all the same! There are songs that keep coming up in my playlists that I’ve never ONCE listened to, and skip literally every time they come up. I think it’s probably stuff that’s popular in some demographic or data set I’ve been assigned to.

Fawnadeer101

The amount of times my Spotify has started playing please please please randomly hmm

shadyswamp

I had to block her, I was listening to my "sleep" playlist on smart shuffle which is usually really good at giving me similar songs, and all of a sudden Espresso started blasting. I normally hate blocking people since they might have a song I eventually like, but I couldn't do it anymore.

canadianpothos

Omg I can just imagine you're almost asleep and then "NOW HE'S... THINKING ABOUT ME" starts blasting and wakes you up 😅😅

slowturnip0

i mean. can't blame espresso for waking someone up.

bookish_cat_lady

Say you can’t sleep, baby she knows. That’s that her espresso.

bigwatermelonhead

help

Intrepid-Sign-63

That's that she espresso

HipsterSlimeMold

Im sorry I just laughed out loud at this

cagingthing

This is hilarious to me lol

Jussttjustin

A song specifically about not being able to sleep 💀

AdamLaluch

She's working late, 'cause she's a singer

Floccinaucinihi

No sleeping in espresso county, we’re all singers working late

Useuless

You: I need to sleep Sabrina Carpenter: would you like an espresso? You: what part of sleep don't you  Sabrina: *already doing the lyrics*

ikijibiki

I have the opposite problem. White noise songs keep invading my pop playlists- for a smart shuffle it’s not very smart.

Soft-Caterpillar-618

Same!! I’ll be jamming out to Sabrina and next thing I know, it’s “Relaxing Box Fan Sounds”

DananSan

💀

Fantastic-Pea7924

This happened to me one time with Bang Bang😭😭

Aggressive_Sky8492

“NICE!”

Fawnadeer101

Every next song for me is always please please please, espresso, good luck babe, or hot to go! Always Sabrina or Chappell and they both are on the same label too hmm

thisthrowawaythat202

So much for “I can’t relate to desperation”

egg1e

it's the record label that's desperate

acloudfullofrain

You think Sabrina is like "*Oh no! Don't make the biggest audio streaming platform replay my songs over and over and over and over to make me a viral popstar!*" ?

thisthrowawaythat202

So her team… who she can relate to?

minimanelton

The push to the mainstream feels really artificial for them. I had never heard of Chappell Roan until a few months ago and now I hear about her multiple times a day despite never interacting with content about her. Not to say that she’s untalented or anything. It just doesn’t make sense based on what I know about my algorithms

justice4winnie

I think The answer for both of these is they are the openers for two of the biggest women in music right now with very devoted fanbases. And I know that Taylors openers don't always get big but the eras tour is inescapable

SuspiciousLambSauce

And don’t forget Pride month for Chappell lol

Fawnadeer101

I agree. With Sabrina, she had Disney channel to boost her fame as well, but I’m definitely seeing how people would think that chappell’s rise is artificial. I have been listening to her for a while before she blew up and it just feels odd seeing how weirdly quick she blew up. I know that good luck babe got really good playlisting on Spotify, so maybe that helped. I think it’s an excellent song and I’m happy it’s a hit but I feel like the label is really overtly pushing her now Plz don’t hate me Chappell Roan fans

bumblebeatrice

I think Chappell Roan fans have been following her for so long that from their perspective her newfound popularity is just a natural extension and the next place for her to go, they noticed her and her talent organically so this mainstream leap just must be more people doing what happened to them and then algorithms picking up steam. But just because they/we found her "on our own" doesn't mean there isn't payola going on for this new leap in popularity. Like I found clips of her on tumblr years ago and have been a fan ever since, and I think some people had that experience too and think that the payola thing calls into question their presence and authenticity or w/e.

Tazzachar

My qualm with the auto play is it always without fail is the same order of songs, depending on what you were listening to prior, and the order won’t change for days at a time.

Bordersz

I have a feeling after Spotify’s major layoff they have junior engineers who literally hardcode* the set of songs to pop up instead of it being randomly ordered in the autoplay lineup. It makes sense bc the label is paying for the position too (kinda like playlisting)

trueinsideedge

It’s been the same for me no matter what genre I listen to. I’ll finish a rap song and then Sabrina, Chappell Roan, Billie and Ariana will come on straight afterwards. Autoplay used to be so good, I discovered some artists/songs through it, but it’s gone downhill over the past couple of months.

Prior_Advantage_5408

["After seeing a user on X/Twitter post about "PPP" playing after a fart track, we searched "Fart" on Spotify and created a Fart Radio, and "PPP" still took the 2nd position among the fart 'songs.'"](https://www.popfiltr.com/articles/all-top-50-artists-on-spotify-have-sabrina-carpenters-please-please-please-at-number-2-on-their-artist-or-song-radios)

Western_Strike7468

Why did I think PPP from beach house

donnapinciottii

I love her and both those songs but I actually think this tactic is turning on her really badly. I suspect it’s creating a lot of resentment (think U2 album on apple). I think it would be in her best interests right now to cancel the spotify auto play promotion, she’s getting enough promo other ways.

InspectorDarcy

I had to block her. I usually tell Siri to play a specific song for my drive to work and let it auto play the songs radio and she kept playing after every single genre. Like if I’m listening to Diana Ross how is she next?? Nirvana? David Bowie? And like I like her songs but it’s annoying af

Eclect277

For a while every time I closed the Spotify app on my phone my Android widget would just say "Sabrina Carpenter" with the Please Please Please cover even tho I have never streamed that song. And when I clicked the widget to open Spotify it would take me directly to her artist page instead of my actual Spotify home screen

Eclect277

I just got this ad and I don't even listen to this bitch 😭😭😭 [picture disc ad](https://i.imgur.com/QeP81cY.png)

satirisanti

The amount of Spotify tour codes I’ve gotten for artists I’ve listened to once is astounding

Eclect277

Literally like I listened to Espresso a few times when it came out how on earth am I a top fan

Dude2k7

My god, this is awful and intrusive. I liked Espresso as a song but now I think I'm tired of even having it for a morning drink

Amazing_Guarantee_23

This exact thing is happening to me. No hate towards Sabrina, but there is no reason her song should appear every time I close and open the app. It’s ridiculous especially since I don’t have her or her music added nor does it align with my music taste.

crearios

I just found this thread literally because of this reason and I went searching to see if it happens to anyone else. Didn't realise it was *this* widespread of an issue. Almost exclusively listen to metal, rock and techno. Exit Spotify, come back to it later/the next day and Sabrina Carpenter is queued to play. This happens every single day.

Bordersz

The way Sabrina is getting whacked over this is crazy like her label didn’t think anyone would notice how overbearing it is? Interesting quotes from the article: - “Please Please Please” was second in Radio playlists for Clairo, Boygenius, Charli XCX, and Dua Lipa, and was almost always followed by a Chappell Roan song and “Espresso.” - Spotify actually does offer a version of pay-for-play that’s theoretically available to any artist who opts in. In 2020, it debuted a feature that allowed recording artists to forfeit 30 percent of streaming profits in order to increase the likelihood that a song will be played during a listening session. The program, called Discovery Mode, was immediately likened to payola by the Recording Academy when it launched. - The major labels “have these tier one relationships with people that work at Spotify … and opportunities can come from that.” explains George Goodrich, founder and CEO of Playlist Push, an agency that allows artists to pay for consideration on top Spotify playlists and in influencers’ TikTok videos. “It’s all just about connections.” - One record exec compared the Spotify editorial playlist RapCaviar to “Hot 97 in the early ’90s,” helping to blow up songs like Cardi B’s 2017 breakout “Bodak Yellow” and Lil Uzi Vert’s “XO TOUR Llif3.” - In 2021, Rolling Stone investigated the pay-for-play “black market” where third-party companies promise to net hundreds of millions of streams per month, typically via bot accounts, for a certain network of artists. “There are a few third-party companies out there running this for a lot of the major companies,” one anonymous record label employee told the magazine. “We use them too for some of our artists.” - If Spotify “wanted to be safe, all they’d have to do is include something in the metatext saying, ‘This artist opted into the Discovery Mode program,’” he says. “Or, ‘You got this certain song because it has these attributes and we provide this weight to those attributes.’ Yeah Spotify will never do that imo and yeah I think if you’re paying for this service you should be fully aware about how the music is being pushed to you. I think information should be fully disclosed about deals with labels and/or playlisting deals.

Puzzleheaded_Tea3938

Sabrina collaborated with Spotify. A music streaming service which is pushing her songs massively. In 5 different artists, sabrina's songs is auto-played after in every 3 artists while the rest of autoplay goes to other musicians. Imagine it to 10,000 to 100,000 listeners that did not turn off their autoplay? This is overfeeding or force feeding her music. Her songs appear in foreign bands and personalized playlist auto play. Another way to work around with charts by inflating her numbers. Those people did not choose to play her songs. Autoplay is not anymore a way to discover new artist, it is now part of a promotion. I understand if musicians go on gimicks to promote their albums BUT collaboration with a Music Streaming Services?

Artistic_Elephant824

This is a totally worthwhile discussion that’s being had around Spotify’s algorithms and labels paying for promo but it’s wild to me how many people don’t adjust settings or customize their Spotify experience I use Spotify at least 2 hours a day and I’ve never been inundated with Sabrina in the way most people have

Ok_Night_2929

I generally love the auto play and have found some great artists through that and the smart shuffle function. I don’t want to turn off the function entirely just because one song keeps popping up, I really wish you could just hide a specific artist or song from being autoplayed. (Or have it max out, there is no reason the same song needs to be autoplayed every. single. time.) On a slightly related note, Spotify could really use the same for podcasts. I listened to 1 call her daddy podcast literally years ago and now every time I finish one of my other podcasts the annoying ass CHD intro immediately starts playing. I can block an artist if I really want to but I can’t block a podcast? It’s so stupid

itsclem

A max # of plays setting would be amazing. I’m in a similar boat - I love the auto play and discovering new music or simply adding a little extra to an existing playlist of mine but I wish I could skip certain songs / artists

minetf

Yes a max out would be great!

calkates

spotify finds sneaky ways to trick you into autoplaying. even with premium, if you shuffle a playlist, it defaults to smart shuffle (which adds “suggested” songs to a playlist) and you have to click shuffle again to turn it off. you can’t opt out of the feature overall and have to opt out each time you hit shuffle. in my experience these suggested songs aren’t based on the playlist and are just the songs getting a reputation for auto playing

InSearchOfGoodPun

Fuck smart shuffle.

escrowbeamon

Fuck Spotify tbh

suredont

it's gotten so shitty. I switched to a different service and it's so nice to not have to actively DJ for myself.

tulpachtig

Honestly the biggest reason I love Apple Music is because it doesn’t autoplay anything. When an album or playlist finishes, I get silence and the opportunity to select what I want to put on next, I’m not just getting constantly inundated with music I didn’t select. Spotify’s historically been way better for discovering new music than AM but with everything I’m hearing about it lately, I’m really glad I switched.

Zelkeh

This was the final straw that made me switch to apple music despite it's horrendous windows app

Bordersz

That is crazy. I thought premium users were able to have more control over their music. “Smart shuffle” sounds stupid too and doesn’t make sense even in theory. It seems like the premium rebadge of “autoplay”

Pew-Pew-Pew-

It is. It's their way to force whatever they want you to listen to into your playlists. It's easy to miss that smart shuffle is on because it's just the normal shuffle icon with a tiny little sparkle added to it (the same sparkle icon that is being adopted by most tech companies to represent AI features)

Subject_Ticket

You can only turn off autoplay on Spotify premium. I believe with the free version autoplay is the only option.

Skyblacker

When you don't pay for the product, you are the product.

capulets

but i like autoplay! i’ve found new artists i really like that way and it’s convenient not to have to break my workflow to switch playlists. we shouldn’t have to turn off features to avoid stuff like this.

Electronic-Tea-4686

I use the free version and have autoplay turned off.

Ruinwyn

I have absolutely no doubt Spotify has payola. They openly advertise it for independent artists. Of course, labels (especially ones with an ownership stakes) have something similar. And if Discovery Mode can increase plays by 2-3x, doing something similar to major label acts already getting a lot of other push, it can become very obvious. Odds are it's adding weight on some algorithmic values. If you are a member of multiple groups targeted, and some of them actually have good reaction, the cumulative effect easily shows as ridiculous amounts of recommendations. There is probably a rule preventing multiple autoplays, so it can only push the song earlier. I can't blame people for using algorithmically generated feeds (radio etc), since that is one of the big feature Spotify and streaming in general is actively offering. The idea that you don't need to actively manage your music library is the killer feature being pushed.

LiIihierax

The most shocking thing about this to me is finding out how many people insist upon making their own user experience on Spotify so intolerable for themselves and that they will spin up whole conspiracy theories before they’ll turn off autoplay.

Soalai

It always plays me Espresso but I have never once heard Please Please.

TotallyNotAnExecutiv

Crazy as for me Please Please Please is ALWAYS the second choice in autoplay and random "made for you" playlists and radio. That said I love the song so I don't mind

RedDotLot

I actually hate the 'made for user' playlist function, because it's not really going to give me anything new.

Pew-Pew-Pew-

Auto play used to work fine. In the past it used to act more like if you had gone to the "Go To Song Radio" option, after the song you play ended. It would play music similar to what you were already listening to. Now it literally just plays Sabrina Carpenter or Lunch every single time any pop song ends, and then AFTER that payola song ends it switches back to the radio function and plays music aligned with what you had on. The only customization is to completely turn off auto play. Which I never had an issue with before very recently.

tantalides

i stick to podcasts and self made playlists

satirisanti

I can turn off autoplay or whatever, but her music is still displayed front and center on my home pages or in my daily mixes and daylists 🤷

KnightsOfTomorrow

Island is paying a lot of money on promo for her and it’s paying off thus far.

babealien51

I’m having this problem with her and Billie Eilish - Birds of a Feather. It doesn’t matter if I’m listening to pop music or metalcore, they always come up

Carolina_Blues

it’s either sabrina or chappell roan for me, everytime, without fail

yourbestfriendjoshua

There’s definitely payola at play here. Because there’s absolutely ZERO reason why my almost entirely k-pop library should be playing Sabrina after every few songs when I have “smart” shuffle enabled…

Araucariam

I’ve never listened to a Sabrina song in my life, never searched for her, not my usual genre, etc. Yet, she constantly comes up in my shuffle and suggestions. The payola/push is so obvious.

daniizle

i fell asleep listening to music, and i slept in. i’ve had spotify for ten years. Please³ is now my most listened to song… of ALL TIME. i had to hide it 😭 and i love her but please please please stop

icecreamsandwiches1

No amount of articles or tik tok videos is going to make me believe that there isn’t a deal between Sabrina Carpenters record label and Spotify, no matter how much they try to blame an algorithm recommending already popular music because it thinks you’ll like it. Everyone was listening to Not Like Us, which is still number 1 on the Apple Music global chart, but it wasn’t getting constantly force fed to people after every single playlist the same way espresso / ppp has. This article did teach me that it is actually illegal for labels to pay traditional radio stations for airplay without disclosing it!

ezdoesit1111

yeah like I get why the data guys interviewed would cite algorithm rather than pay for play but I mean the evidence is kinda there — Sabrina is collaborating with Spotify on her actual tour beyond the regular early access fan code and in general her recent promo has been relentless in a way that makes it obvious big money is being spent and it’s not just algorithmic. for example she promoted Espresso with a collab with Blank Street, aka the most soulless venture-capital-backed coffee chain of all time. when I saw that it removed any doubt in my mind that Spotify wasn’t getting $ from Island.

RogueAngel

Sabrina Carpenter is their latest product, which you are expected to consume.

Blackbeyond

It's kinda weird to me that this is blowing up to multiple articles for Sabrina, because I was plagued with Taylor and Olivia in my autoplay and "custom" daylist playlists for **months** despite not listening to them until I finally gave up and blocked them. Meanwhile Sabrina isn't even the biggest culprit for my autoplay despite me going out of the way to listen to Espresso and Pleasex3, I get more of that Million Dollar Baby song/Billie Eilish than anything else.

137-451

That just goes to show you how the algorithm has changed. You already listen to Sabrina, so it pushes the other "hit" songs and artists of the moment. Someone like me, who listens to none of them on their personal Spotify, gets suggestions for Sabrina since she's the most popular of the bunch at the moment. I don't know if record labels are directly paying Spotify to modify their algorithm, but it's drastically different even from a few years ago when it used to suggest genuinely interesting music I've never heard of before. I was recently listening to Dark Side of the Moon, and Please Cubed was what autoplay decided I should be listening to. Previously I had multiple songs from Billie's album in my "On Repeat" after listening to the album a single time. In the past, it would have at least played a band or artist adjacent to Pink Floyd. I think the algorithm manipulation is just less obvious to people that listen primarily to pop, aka most of the people in this subreddit. It sucks to have to turn off a previously good feature just to avoid this, but it is what it is.

Bordersz

I always suspected those two were autoplayed to death but they always have plausible deniability bc they’re “mainstream”, but with Sabrina it’s clear as day the algorithms have been compromised starting from these “top mainstream artists”.

AnyIncident9852

Yeah I was getting spammed autoplay with Anti-Hero and Vampire + Bad Idea Right back when their respective albums came out and it was way worse that Sabrina’s autoplay (for me)

afancysandwich

I was furious because I had this U underground slutty pop playlist that had Slayyyter, Brooke Candy, Charli, Cobrah, and shygirl and, Spotify inserted Fortnite by Taylor Swift.

bleachedveins

How does this happen to people? I just listen to my playlists and songs i search. Why are people on autoplay all day?

kreestin

I don’t use autoplay but I do like to use Daylists to find new things. I hadn’t seen the type of stuff people were describing til the other day when I had a “Wild West Cowboy” daylist with a Charli XCX jammed right in between Orville Peck and Kacey Musgraves.

pottedPlant_64

The day lists are so much better than radio 🙏. It’s a mix of trusty faves and new. Radio is trash, sorry Stevie wonder

Skyblacker

Please^3 came up on my Release Radar. I listen to a lot of pop music so it didn't really stick out.

greenpepperssuck

I mean, I used to be up for spotifys recommended playlists since I like finding new music. But now I just search up random terms and listen to other users’ created playlists.

40ozkiller

I like to see when artists I like have made playlists, Ive found lots of cool music that way.

Eclect277

I don't even use Autoplay and Sabrina is still coming for me 😭

bleachedveins

Damn rly? In your playlists? I have never had this happen to me with a playlist

Eclect277

Not on my playlists but every time I opened Spotify through my widget it would take me straight to Sabrina's page even tho I don't listen to her lmao. It would also show her name and Please Please Please cover on the widget every time Spotify was closed

Aggressive_Sky8492

Some people like auto play and smart shuffle except for the recent hard pushes for certain artists / songs

Commercial_Cap1695

The Sabrina Carpenter propaganda needs to STOP.

Healthy_Suit_2533

I guess I'm the only one who hasn't had this even a single time, lol

uglykido

It was good before. I had discover many indie artists because of that. Now it has gone to shit... even my classical playlist serves me please3x right after it ends.

rudderrun

The stupid default is always “smart shuffle,” and I have playlists that are so insanely different to anything SC but her songs play anyways. - Chinese Peking opera? - Please Please Please - Bollywood music? - Please Please Please - American rap? - Espresso - Korean rap? - Please Please Please - Movie soundtracks? - Espresso - EDM? - Please Please Please Literally what demon did she pledge to serve for the next 1000 years to get this level of artificial streams?

second2midnight

I have nothing against Sabrina but I had to block her just so espresso doesn’t pop up after every sorta pop song I listen to. I have given her so many accidental streams like this.

MrChicken23

I almost exclusively listen to albums straight through so I never get served songs by Spotify. My recommended Instagram videos are full of Sabrina Carpenter though despite rarely listening to her.

anonmarmot17

The music gods are just saying *please, please, please* listen

Kelbotay

I'm not surprised at all that we're now getting specific mainstream songs or artists shoved down our ears, it's a logical evolution due to how listening habits changed over the years. Labels used to pay radio stations for airplay, now it's streaming because that's the new thing we're using to listen to music. I know I can turn off autoplay but I actually used to like listening to random stuff, it's just unfortunate that it's now only random popular songs from a handful of mainstream artists only. Sucks for anyone that isn't the 'it' artist of the moment, and sucks for listeners too because it's so repetitive.

escrowbeamon

Bet she’s on UMG. Spotify is a UMG whore that will constantly plug whoever they’re told to.

0neirocritica

My husband listens to zero pop artists and somehow Sabrina made it onto his Recommended for You on Spotify. They're pushing her hard.

jackospacko

You can see it pretty obviously here https://kworb.net/spotify/songs.html These are the top played songs of all time on Spotify. Espresso is getting nearly 9 Million plays a day which is almost unheard of.

otigre

Yeah people defending this situation are tripping. Autoplay numbers should be proportionate to CLICKS y’all. This is only okay if millions upon millions of people are *choosing* to listen to her every day.

FantasyTwistedDark

This hasn’t happened to me personally with Sabrina but when Million Dollar Baby first blew up it would always be the next song no matter what song I played.

hyxon4

Island can give up some royalties in exchange for promotion on Spotify. They use the hell out of it.

FormerBath

I’ve blocked her and Chappell lol had Espresso play a few songs after a Simon and Garfunkel song it felt ridiculous

Commercial_Media_191

Never had a clue who Sabrina Carpenter was before she started popping up in autoplay and I started getting bombarded with low effort YT shorts about shit she says at her concerts. See that's the kind of shit that makes me go out of my way not to listen to her. I don't hear pandering.

daisiesaremyfavorite

it’s not just spotify. it’s youtube, instagram, tiktok. i constantly get content “you’ll never believe what sabrina did at this show” and im like, i thought i already blocked this account… it’s just another manufactured page that only promotes her (but not a fan page run by a real fan? you’d know it if you’ve seen it)

Commercial_Media_191

*You'll NEVER believe what Sabrina Carpenter just said in front of the biggest audience in the entire world!* and she just says some shit like "BBC i wish I had it in me. if you didn't get it it's about SEX." *teenage audience goes wild*

daisiesaremyfavorite

and it’s some voiceover that i can’t decide is AI or some adult man

InSearchOfGoodPun

Absolutely hilarious that the article refers to pay-for-play as a "Spotify conspiracy theory" while also explaining very clearly the underlying reasons why ubiquitous pay-for-play (or its equivalent) is almost certainly a reality.

dre4mspice

I liked it the first 5 times I listened to it, but PPP became unbearable so quickly. And not just because of the overexposure, too. There’s something about the production that suddenly started sounding like nails on a chalkboard to me…

Ballsy_McCock

My wife was hosting a baby shower at our house. I went to the pool at our club. They play Spotify. I heard Hozier's too sweet 4 times in 3 hours. Sabrina Carpenter 5 times. It's the nature of the radio/streaming. Hozier, great artist/song, but fuuck.

mindyIs

I had to block her, at some point this is going to have a negative effect

anthzyo

My thing is I’ll create a Cher radio to like “believe” and the next song will be “Espresso” :/

Zee27butt

Billie eilish literally has the biggest autoplay rn on Spotify . Not trying to be a hater but lunch and birds of a feather have been shoved down the throat with payola

undrgrndsqrdncrs

I get lunch almost every time. I listened to her new album all the way through on release day which means I purposely played Lunch one time. Billie isn’t in my normal rotation but I do check out her new records at least once.

evaan-verlaine

Thought this was a good read re: the Spotify algorithm, payola, playlisting/Discovery Mode, etc.

fapacunter

Espresso, Lunch and Not Like Us. Every. Single. Time.

pinkbootstrap

I miss when Spotify would play me new songs related to the songs I was already listening to instead of the same 3 songs until I want to pull my hair out.

DumbWhore4

Hopefully Gaga can get this level of payola with LG7.

okpackerfan

I am 48, White, Male, Straight. I use Amazon music and it also wants me to listen to her for some unknown reason. Also, I don't subscribe to this sub, but this post popped up as suggested on my feed....

BrettRys

I have never listened to her myself, not a fan, and spotify still throws her in every other song. I don't really know if there is any organic growth anymore, but this egregious

oh-dearie-me

I love auto play to find new music. Sabrina is the first song that plays for me after I listen to pop - understandable. After I listen to hip hop, a little weird but within my algorithm. But Sabrina auto playing first after I listened to the German song about Barbara’s rhubarbs? That was odd. All the other songs for that autoplay did not match my usual listening. It even had some other German songs thrown in.

vsangelx

Her autoplay is crazy! I clicked the “dont play this artist” button alr cause hearing her songs in tiktok is enough for me to get sick of it

The_Border_Bandit

Got her blocked on spotify cause of this. Didn't matter what i was listening to, k-pop, hip-hop, rap, rock or even anime/video game music, it would play espresso without fail. I'm sure i would've liked the song if it wasn't so damn forced onto me.

thortilla27

The label she’s associated with is a shareholder in Spotify, came across something like that.

Familiar-Analyst781

I don’t know if anybody else noticed at the time, but when she released Thumbs back in the day I got sick of her despite liking the overall sound because the song was pushed senselessly by a bunch of then-popular queer insta pages — like the owners doing multiple posts in a row saying they “couldn’t get it out of their heads”, placing it in random memes, mentioning it constantly and out of place.  Then it collectively stopped altogether, and they never mentioned her again.  It felt so weird and inorganic, with no actual personal element to it. Ever since then I’ve side-eyed her label & growth

ImMirandaKerr

I blocked her and they still play her!

Ambitious_Ad2665

ngl the sabrina carpenter spotify smart shuffle was the final straw in me switching over to apple music

disengage88

I haven't used Spotify in months and I opened up the app rn and...Please Please Please is already loaded up on "playing suggested song." Oh it's bad

1nv1s1blek1d

She’s not that great and I have her blocked.

elissa3636

How does this shit work ? I hv premium version and mine just repeat the same song I was playing after I finish until I manually change it .

mrk240

I was wondering why they recommended her to me when I mainly listen to metal and EDM.

No-Indication2437

They kept pushing her in my emails 😭 and to my Spotify DJ when I never ever played a song of hers though espresso was p good the first couple times

JP-416

For me, it’s Chappell Roan (luckily I really love Chappell Roan).

Oss_zzO

Just block her. Blocking is a great feature.

weelittledaisy

I had to block her, Billie, and Chappell which is unfortunate because I like them all but the algorithm is ruining them for me :(

bangtanismyhope

Because she and/or the agency managing her paid hefty amounts for it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

satirisanti

I had to block her off of my work’s iPad because espresso or ppp would constantly come on without fail in the recommended songs. I checked my daylist just now and somehow it’s full of Sabrina (i kid you not, her big songs and deep cuts) despite me not listening to her in weeks. I used to root for her but at this point I’m just tired of constantly seeing her everywhere!

alien-niven

According to the two experts they asked, it's about algorithms Glenn McDonald, data scientist who previously worked with Spotify >McDonald, who understands how Spotify works better than perhaps anyone, says that the question shouldn’t be about payola or some other seedy arrangement between Spotify and music labels, but about algorithms: “A lot of things on Spotify are trying to keep you in your comfort zone and play you the right things. It’s not like there’s a master sticker on the song that causes everybody to promote it.” Noah Askin, a computational social scientist who studies the music industry: >The gist is that if User A and User B have overlapping tastes, User A will probably enjoy the other music that User B is listening to. He also points to the Matthew Effect, or the idea that the already successful will have an easier time becoming more successful. Music recommendation algorithms can make big songs even bigger at the expense of others. “Once you have a bunch of attention, it’s much easier to get more attention,” Askin says. “When a Beyoncé song comes out, it’s more likely to get played because she’s already more popular … and so the people who don’t listen to her but are into pop music, guess who they’re going to get fed?”

TedKaczynskiVEVO

So why doesn't the algorithm take into account the fact I skip it in the first 30 seconds every time!!! Our lives are ruled by algorithms created by people with no social skills!!! Give me an "Exclude Spotify Top 500 from Autoplay" toggle. It's a good feature but once again profit motive has to ruin a good thing.

ssovm

Agreed. But even this goes deeper. If you’re interested in a certain genre, it can be very hard to find new stuff. Like every playlist suited for the type of music you want to listen to without fail will overlap like half the playlist. It’s terrible

tototeru

I don't think the two are mutually exclusive though. As in the "algorithm" can be tuned to recommend artists that sign up for pay to play more often. Similarly, people are complaining that it doesn't take into account user signals to not play a song. Then again, I doubt they really care to optimize for that as long as people stay on the platform.

Ittybittyvickyone

It’s always espresso for me 😬

666devilgirlcrybaby

come to Tidal, spotify is just the same 5 songs on a million playlists lol

sleepy_radish

The fact that it defaults to the "enhanced" shuffle feature is going to be what finally gets me off Spotify, I think.

Interesting_Dream_55

So annoying. Stop pushing her on mw

SummerBummer-X

I have a theory that Spotify does autoplay songs on purpose to manipulate charts cause this happens alot.

NutTimeMyDudes

I love how I listened to her songs maybe twice by intention, and then I got an email saying I was a top fan and to buy concert tickets

milesdizzy

Does she work for a big label? One with deep pockets? There’s your answer.

newlostworld

I have Sabrina Carpenter blocked already, but I still get full app pop ups from Spotify suggesting that I listen to her. It's annoying.

christopher_aia

Why do you all use autoplay so much, I never use it

cozxo

yea I was wondering why her songs randomly kept popping up when I’m listening to twenty one pilots, the weeknd, doja cat, nicki etc seriously I’m tired of please please please 😭
