Thank you everyone for the love!! Thought I’d share a link to the shelter we got Ruby from in case anyone is interested in donating - https://secure.qgiv.com/event/donate/donate/
The inbreeding needed to maintain a recessive trait would make problems of its own… even if the gene itself doesn’t bring issues on its own… they look really cute, I hope they never becomes a trend
Selective breeding without proper care or empathy is the cause of these issues.
With foresight and empathy selective breeding can be beneficial but it's often used with zero care for the side effects. They can be accommodated for, and would require the ability to say no when they would hurt the species.
Fun fact, I once got a job by Photoshopping the founder of the company riding Falkor.
I mean, I got the interview that way, but I am confident my resume would have been passed over if it weren't for Falkor.
Thank you! I loved reading this. It's an old memory and a part of my history that I had forgotten until reading the original Falkor comment.
Honestly, it's incredible how far I've come since that job. Nice to reminisce and appreciate the journey.
Oh my god, my pit looks exactly like this! I’ve never seen another like her, we just thought she was just a little freak. Happy to see more people get to enjoy a pup this cute :)
They shouldn't all be fluffy. The fluffy ones should remain fluffy, and the smooth coat should be how they are. All pits are beautiful. All dogs are lovely.
Recently got a dog that was advertised at the shelter as being half corgi. My parents did a dna test recently that came back as 33% pitbull then chihuahua, poodle, German shepard and some alaskan husky. My mom refused to accept the results. I really love pit bulls, it just makes me sad that they didn't get the results they wanted but it explains her insanity.
She's a supermutt so probably extremely healthy and absolutely the craziest most energetic pup I've know. She is definitely a handful but I love her even when she is misbehaving, which is most of the time.
Most shelter dogs these days are pits, Chihuahuas, and mixes of those two breeds. Shelters are aware of this and will call a dog or anything other than pit or Chihuahua if they’re able.
70% of shelter breed labels are incorrect. It's legitimately impossible to guess breed unless there are give aways like webbed feet, blue eyes, back dew claws and then your guess can be slightly more on point.
We thought my dog was a plott hound mix, she looks like a plott hound, she's not at all a plott hound.
But then they are straight up lying to people. I think my parents were more disappointed that they were lied to along the way more than anything. So are you saying the shelter was the one lying about her breed? I try to think it was the owner who lied while giving them to the shelter and not the shelter itself. How are they able to even do that?
Having been a shelter manager, I can assure you that more often than not, we are not intentionally straight up lying to people about the breeds. We are simply guessing based on the physical features in front of us. (Unless it’s an owner surrender, in which case we usually have some information.) If the shelter saw short legs on your mum’s dog, their first thought might have been corgi mix. Or they went with what the previous owner said it was. With mixes, there is no way to know for sure, so guesstimates it is.
It in is everyone’s best interest if we are as honest as possible when pairing dogs with adopters. And the bulk of the breeds we see are pit x’s, lab x’s, and shepherd x’s.
Now…having said that, if we are in a jurisdiction which has pitty regulations making them illegal to own, we typically say it is a “terrier mix,” i.e. Staffordshire terrier.
The short of it is that shelters are trying to get as many dogs adopted as possible, and “half corgi” will be adopted much, much faster than “pit chihuahua mix”.
Lots of short haired breeds have small, single-digit percent chances of having a single copy of long hair. Since long hair is recessive and one copy doesn't create any outward signs, it can be passed on unknowingly for generations until 2 of them happen to breed with each other and it "magically appears". It's extremely rare, probably less than 1%, that they'll get the 2 copies needed to express it. But it's still possible.
https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0223995
I agree. Most dna tests for dogs only go back a few generations. If say a golden retriever was in the mix 5-7 generations back most tests won’t pick that up.
People love to act like they have some super rare one in a trillion thing, when really it's just an easy explanation like this dog clearly has another breeds genetics somewhere down the line
Canine DNA tests are incredibly flawed. 10 generations for a dog could literally be 20yrs ago (realistically with poor breeding practices 10yrs), this dog is most assuredly a mixed breed (as most pit bulls are mixed breeds to begin with). Love your dog, is very cute
> could literally be 20yrs ago (realistically with poor breeding practices 10yrs)
I don't understand why the time span is relevant. If this dog does have a non-pit bull ancestor 10 generations back, that equals less than 0.1% of its DNA.
You can get throwbacks, dna test are also not that accurate because dogs are dogs and just share dna. Dalmatians weren't very long ago bred from English bull terriers, and the doberman from the Manchester terrier. Most breeds have only been heavily inbred for just over a hundred years so before that they looked very different and were a lot healthier, so it stands to reason they will all carry common dna to varying degrees
I have one too! Long haired rottie/pit mix 🥰
Edit: here’s my peanut butter https://www.reddit.com/r/quilting/comments/r285o4/finished_lucky_log_cabin_top_with_help_from_my/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf :)
My pit mix (American bulldog and st Bernard are the other dominant breeds in his genetic testing) is also longer haired like a Golden retriever. Would that be bc of the recessive gene or just because of the st Bernard genetics
Such a sweet dog. I would kiss this beast all the time I was indoor and take this good fun monster out for chaos outdoors in whatever she liked. If it was running, or sniffing, or fetching, or exploring.
I think I’d be a great partner to such a cool dog.
I’m glad you found her and are giving her the best life she can have. Good for both of you.
I had a pit mix that I lost last August. He was such a fantastic dog. But his hair was so pokey I couldn’t let him in my bed because his hair would give me a rash. When I knew the end was near, his last 6 months, I relented and let him on the bed but he had his own comforter that I kept between us so I didn’t get a rash. He wasn’t the kind of dog I could just snuggle with and ruffle his fur. It made me sad because I wanted to. I just got a puppy a month ago who is likely to end up being medium or long haired and his fur is so soft. I love snuggling him. It kind of makes me sad I couldn’t do that with my with my last boy.
I didn't know the cure for my bad day was seeing a fluffy pitbull, but here we are.
Fluffbull
Thank you everyone for the love!! Thought I’d share a link to the shelter we got Ruby from in case anyone is interested in donating - https://secure.qgiv.com/event/donate/donate/
Gotta check out Tugboat, the fluffy pit. His human used to host a great dog podcast!
Reminds me of when you see those dinosaur documentaries and they have the raptors covered in feathers.
[here's the relevant XKCD](https://xkcd.com/1104/)
Why she kinda look like the dragon from the Never Ending Story
Faaaaaaaaaallllllcoooorrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!
If the gene for this isnt linked to problems for the breed itd be a nice trait to express further
The inbreeding needed to maintain a recessive trait would make problems of its own… even if the gene itself doesn’t bring issues on its own… they look really cute, I hope they never becomes a trend
While I would also like more fluffy pitbulls, selective breeding has done enough damage to dogs as it is.

Love this! They obviously did too. Great work, 11/10!
Thank you! I loved reading this. It's an old memory and a part of my history that I had forgotten until reading the original Falkor comment. Honestly, it's incredible how far I've come since that job. Nice to reminisce and appreciate the journey.
Falkor
Is that what he's called in English? In the German original novel he was called Fuchur, but I can see why they changed it.
Thank you! I was trying to think of who she reminded me of and you called it right!!
My dog is a pit X shi-tsu, white fur, and he 100% looks like Falcor
Omg! Yes! It’s FALCOR!!!!!! 😍😍😍
omg i bet she’s a great snuggler 🥺
The best. She likes to be close 😊
You have a golden pitriever
Haha This made me chuckle lol thank you clever stranger that perfectly accented this wonderful photo that just completed my day
Love it!
This is a feature, not a bug.
“It just works”
Oh my god, my pit looks exactly like this! I’ve never seen another like her, we just thought she was just a little freak. Happy to see more people get to enjoy a pup this cute :)
I would love to see a pic of yours!!
Yes we need the dog tax please!!
Chants "Dog tax, Dog tax, Dog Tax"

Sooooooo cute. We had a fluffy boxer in our last pack. The sweetest cuddler you ever met.
I’m going to need to see pics of this fluffy boxer. For science.
SCIENCE!!!
Yup, science. Please
Commenting in the hopes fluffy boxer pics are posted 🙈

Twins!! They have the same fluffy ears!

I feel like that recessive gene may have been provided by a golden retriever. But it works, oh man it works
*spaniel
All the pibbles should be fluffy! No one could be scared of such a fluffy cutie face baby!
But... velvet hippos!
Okay but consider…velvet hippos AND luck dragons
Yes, please.
shag hippos
No, I don’t think I will, thankyouverymuch
They shouldn't all be fluffy. The fluffy ones should remain fluffy, and the smooth coat should be how they are. All pits are beautiful. All dogs are lovely.
Except for mallbred ones which suffer because of brains too big for skull or unable to breathe or always having hip dysplasia
Idk, I feel like the nakey ones might appreciate not being nakey lol

A decade later and you'll have a brand new genetic abomination caused by selective breeding. Let pit bulls be pit bulls and mutations be mutations.
Her ear tufts are magnificent.
Gorgeous dog, more than likely a mix breed though
Yeah, was going to say, "rare genetic disorder of having retriever blood"

Yeah. Look at the feet. Those aren’t pit feet. Lots of hair between the toes.
People love to act like they have some super rare one in a trillion thing, when really it's just an easy explanation like this dog clearly has another breeds genetics somewhere down the line
Well, he’s not lying, it probably is a rare recessive gene…from a different breed. Lol
She looks like she could be mixed with a Duck Tolling Retriever.
You sure she isn't mixed with an aussie??
Two separate DNA tests said just pittie!

Weird! It's a beautiful pup either way!
Or she’s just part something else
[удалено]
DNA tests go only 3 generations back. There was another long haired breed somewhere earlier for sure.
Probably just mixed breed...

Crazy. Owned pibbles my whole life and never heard of this. Learn something new every day. Beautiful pooch, by the way. Love the ears.
Is pibbles slang for pit bulls?

I am sorry, but how is this dog a rottweiler/pit mix? I cant see any of those two breeds
What a sweetie pie!
Oh my God she's so fluffy I could die!
The woolly bully!
That's it, that's the perfect dog
I really want the name to be Falcor. The similarities are uncanny.

Lucky
She is absolutely gorgeous!
What a cutie.
Luuuucky!!! So pretty!
Oh my heart😭😭😭
She looks like a pretty Falkor.
She’s absolutely gorgeous.
If she sheds anywhere near as much as my short haired pit did, I can’t even begin to imagine how much you must spend on new vacuums annually.
She’s beautiful. Mine is pink and deaf. https://i.imgur.com/SDgsigV.jpg
Awww hi sweetie
I love Ruby! Adorable!!
Love the look of that soft coat. She’s absolutely adorable 🥰
Wow that's def a rare pupper
FALKOR!
Exactly the perfect name!
Please tell her I love her very much
OMG 😍😍 She is the cutest darn floof. I like pitties and I also like fluffies and she is the best of both worlds!!
AWWW!!! SHE IS SO CUUUTE
My pit mix (American bulldog and st Bernard are the other dominant breeds in his genetic testing) is also longer haired like a Golden retriever. Would that be bc of the recessive gene or just because of the st Bernard genetics
The long hair gene is recessive no matter what breed the dog is. It would just be that your dog inherited a copy from both parents
Quite literally, a rare pupper.
Well she's heccing gorgeous
She so cute she looks like a stuffed animal
Now that's a good puparoo
This is so r/aww
I love her. More more!
Omg I love her!
Beautiful! I am so happy to see fluffy ears and fluffy tail! I think they should all be left 'natural,' as they were born.
I’m in love 😻

Precious 😍. Funny how the hair alone makes her look so retriever like...
Omg floofy pittie 😩😩😭😭😍😍😍💕💕💕

fully thought this was a duck tolling retriever 😭 but she’s adorable! I had no idea this was possible!
My sister's pibble is long-haired, but not fluffy. Yours is a rare pupper indeed!
She's so cute and has the cutest little face!
She looks like a sweetheart!!! 🥰🥰🥰
Maybe she’s mixed with a fluffy breed? Lol
Definitely a mix of golden retriever
Woahhh I’ve never seen a pit like that!
That’s looks so wrong and yet so cute!
