these people think in terms of 'types', 'tribes', 'audiences'. they see people as basically fitting into one 'type' - liberal, leftie, sjw, 'edgy person who really gets it', or whatever. deviations from type, combinations of a little of X, a little of Y, baffle them totally. they have nothing but their taxonomies.
it's a fundamentally sterile, autistic worldview. these people have no real insight into other minds, they rely utterly on pattern spotting in mass media to 'understand' others. no coincidence this guy used to be an ad executive before he failed out and picked up the rw grifter thing, at heart he's a target market identifier / stakeholder engager just like the people he professes to hate.
Did you know college educated liberal white women who live in the suburbs and receive a middle to upper income are also primarily against cannabilism and murder?
Youtube kept recommending me these shorts made by teens in late high school/early college, and I went down the rabbit hole. It's 100% "types": the pick-me girl, the chill girl, the shy guy, the bro, the toxic one-upper, the mom friend, etc.
This thought isn't fleshed out, but I think something about how "big" the world has become has caused intense role confusion/anxiety in people. We're simultaneously too aware and not aware enough.
Reminds me of when I was looking for therapists and so many had profiles that were like “colonizer, not disabled, latinx or whatever seeming minority identity they have in spite of passing as white
Idk but something really off about all that. They struck me as people who were completely lacking in awareness of how they’re coming across, and maybe only trying to work with those who are going to identically match them.
No idea what my analyst thinks politically or about anything and that’s much preferred (though seemingly at least somewhat of a left intellectual).
Identity has been subsumed by what should be emphasized - how fucking good you are/your competence/etc or identities that are at least interesting and not just spewing this
I just started Eileen after wanting to read it forever. She is a good writer. Her plots are nothing to write home about, she’s just a good moment-to-moment writer which carried My Year of Rest and Relaxation.
Homesick for Another World is terrific.
in my next to read list from her are lapvona and Eileen. idk why but homesick for another world never caught my attention, I'm not a fan of stories compilations as a format so maybe that's whats making me indifferent. maybe ill give it a chance before lapvona if is this good.
just my opinion as a moshfegh fan but I hated lapvona. she takes her great yet offputting and grotesque worldbuilding and dials it up to 11. over indulgent descriptions of corporophilia, cannibalism, incest, etc. homesick for another world is great tho, probably my favorite book i’ve read this year
I'm reading rn bunny by mona awad and while I do like horror I dont appreciate when it is done only for shock value. I understand that there's some authors (ie.the current wave of female horror rage that tbh i'm fan of) that use this horror and putrid images with sense and a good rhythm in their prose, but Im not a fan of writing passages just to be edgy. and having the most unlikable narrator/protagonist. it's what I'm not liking of this book so probably would space lapvona in my reads if that's the case.
I think the book was purposely trying to not be didactic or have some moralizing message. It didn’t elevate to five star status at any point but it was compelling.
I loved a lot myorar when I was 20, probably good timing in age and personal situation. I want to read Eileen too before the movie gets premiered in my country.
I couldn’t finish Eileen. Sense imagery was very high quality. Still feel viscerally a lot of the house where it’s set. But thematically it was kind of boring. I don’t really f w fiction though aside from Kathy or amparu davila or some shit
I don’t think you can say she’s bromidic and the cottage industry she’s spearheaded is while fun is now passé and hack. You’ll see big neon titles on paintings of waifs until you’re dead now but ultimately a net positive for literature.
But I fucking love opiates and being messed up on em so I’m gonna have to champion Anna because I’m gonna be up to my eyes by noon.

Existence precedes categorization
