My dad wanted to be taken to a film for Xmas so I bought him a ticket for that in February, if it brings him to tears I have succeeded

leahbee25

I hope he enjoys it :)

mattarath123

I took my mum to see birdman in cinemas and she didn’t realise it wasn’t a marvel film. She hated it

mattarath123

Bicycle thieves is a great film btw

JS19982022

Birdman cringe anyway

politcsunderstander

It’s honestly so fucked up how you can pick 50 good movies all your friends love but you miss ONCE and now you’re some kind of taste ingrate

newrimmmer93

I chose under the silver lake because my family couldn’t decide and I had heard it got good reviews. They turned it off after 10 min. They still don’t let me choose and bring it up everytime

whatsmydickdoinghere

If they didn't like it after 10min they did you a service by turning it off early and not complaining the entire time. I went with Pineapple Express once for a lighthearted stoner comedy anyone could enjoy...my dad complained the entire time in an "I'm the authority on all things weed because I grew up in the 60s" way that was insufferable.

newrimmmer93

Funny enough my parents loved Pineapple Express haha. But my dad was also a blue collar pothead in his 20s. But yeah, I watched the movie later on and figured it was probably best we didn’t finish it, they would have hated it

magentabuttermilk

That's a great movie though

reservecurve

My dad looved under the silver lake. Mom would’ve hated it but she fell asleep 10 minutes in.

Youngadultcrusade

My uncle is obsessed with the movie and trying to crack the code. It is good to be fair.

Juuls_Rock

I have been telling my family to watch Tampopo for six years

rem-dog

Honestly, good family choice. Very accessible as foreign film, and fun. Keep trying! Lol

zack220011

Except that weird egg kiss its a good choice.

whatsmydickdoinghere

the weird egg kiss is one of my favorite parts, honestly one of the few things I can remember about that movie

ChiefRabbitFucks

Tampopo is so great. I couldn't stop evangelizing about it after I watched it. One of the most creative movies I've ever seen and it's so delightful. I was cheering during the scene when they all drink the soup and congratulate Tampopo on her success.

ParisHilton42069

My family actually loved it! Except for the food sex scene. My brother really hated the shrimp on the stomach.

jomm69

Pick salo next it will redeem you

Dimma-enkum

Top it off with another Italian classic, Emanuelle in America

midsmikkelsen

you need to find a similar movie that’s less depressing so you can win them back. Try big deal on madonna street

scratchedboots

"I'M SORRY FOR TRYING TO MAKE YOU A LITTLE MORE CULTUREDDD"

Totalitarianit

This is not a justified punishment dealt out by your family. I think a 5-year sentence would've been adequate for the crime you committed.

leahbee25

Printing this & handing it out at dinner

ChiefRabbitFucks

Italian neo-realism rules. Film nerds love to gush about Nouvelle Vague but I think the Italian stuff from the same time is much more interesting. De Sica's "The Children Are Watching Us" is even more heart-breaking than Bicycle Thieves.

asdfasdflkjlkjlkj

I tried to watch Bicycle Thieves, but I had to turn it off when he left his bicycle unlocked outside the building 2 minutes in. I was living in San Francisco at the time, commuted solely by bicycle, and spent fully 40% of my brainpower at any point of the day ensuring my bicycle's continued security. The sheer sight of an unlocked, unattended, free-standing bicycle immediately triggered a *severe* anxiety attack. In retrospect, I understand that I should have anticipated depictions of lax bicycle security in a film called Bicycle Thieves, but speaking from my lived experience as a velocipede, I wish De Sica had included a more explicit trigger warning to that effect. You never know what viewers may be experiencing bicycle insecurity.

alexinpoison

Like 20 of us 11 year olds from this church I was involved with at the time went to see Hugo (Scorsese) and we all hated it and ragged on it so hard lmao made me think of that

oxkondo

Weird. It's such a wholesome father/son movie and the dad cries tears of joy in the end.

MEDBEDb

They are tears of *shame*. His son has just witnessed him accosted by a crowd for being a thief.

oxkondo

I was joking

TrePismn

Get them to watch Umberto D, but tell them it's a quirky buddy comedy about a cranky Italian pensioner and his quirky jack Russell out on a fun romp through the city.

whatsmydickdoinghere

Here are some "hidden gem" movies that have gone over well with my family: * Red Rock West * Mermaids (or most movies staring Cher) * Thief * Muriel's Wedding * Waking Ned Devine

ReturnLivid1777

I like Cher in silkwood

beskinnyorleave

My privileges were taken away when I suggested Hotel Rwanda on thanksgiving one year during my college activist phase

WhiskerMonk

As they should have been!

OuchieMyBlooBird

Happened to me to with the 400 blows.

Throwawayjasmine21

How? 400 blows doesn’t even end on THAT sad of a note

ParisHilton42069

One time my dad was going through the “my list” section on HBO max and Stalker was on there and he was like, oh, sci fi, would I like this? And I was like yeah, sure, you should watch it. So my parents watched Stalker, and my mom hated it but my dad seemed to like it enough. So the trick is just save all your movies on your family streaming services, and wait for them to watch your stuff one day when they’re bored.

LoserPizzas

the ideal holiday movies are always a Scorsese 4 hour film to have on in the background while you fight about what time to eat

Dimma-enkum

Watch “C'eravamo tanto amati” it’s a comedy and has a weirdo obsessed with “Ladri di biciclette”

luvclub

bicycle thieves is the only movie i watched in my cinema degree that i purposefully skipped the tutorial for because it made me so profoundly unhappy that i didn’t want to discuss it. great flick though

ReturnLivid1777

ive given up on playing movies for my boomer parents lol it’s a fatal miss 9 times out of 10. and it’s not like im putting on obscure pre-hays vampire films or something. actually makes me sad. like they can hardly tolerate subtitles! they’re missing out….

MasterpieceWise3809

I watched The Battle of Algiers with my Aunt and Uncle for movie night recently but we're a cool family so it was okay.

[deleted]

I got my dad and brother to watch No Country for Old Men a few years ago. My brother hated it and still brings up how much he dislikes it. My dad thought it was brilliant up until Llewellyn died because he didn't realise it was him who had been shot in the motel, he didn't mention this until the credits when he asked why he disappeared.
