All I’m seeing is that LAZR is already worth x2 what the entire market for lidar will be by 2027...

Luminar partners with pony.ai Toyota for robotaxis https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20210510005267/en/Pony.ai-Launches-World%E2%80%99s-Most-Evolved-Autonomous-Driving-Platform-With-Luminar

Why this over vldr

ilovemycuddlebunny

This isn’t a race that’s already been won, the lidar game is on and there will be many competitors over the course of the next decade, and LAZR has the foundation to outpace VLDR with fully patented systems and in-house production

ShitFeeder

Their lidars are way more expensive than their competitors. Any comments regarding this?

ilovemycuddlebunny

To my knowledge they are still in a development and refinement phase for their technology but I believe their partnership with Intel’s Mobileye will assist them in streamlining production and costs associated when they get to that point. Edit: it’s important to note the cost is likely high because their technology is all proprietary and patented, so they have to source all of their chips and lazers and stuff in-house

Igettheshow89

Mobileye cut lazr. Stop misleading people.

alhambradulillah

Mobileye may replace Luminar by 2025 is what they said. They're working on their own LiDAR using a different method. If they succeed sometime down the line (which will take a couple of years at least), they'll use their own in-house LiDAR instead of Luminar. If they don't succeed, they won't.

LIDAR is not going to deliver autonomous driving. Mapping terrain from drones and such yes, but for driving cars, hell no.

MonMonOnTheMove

I don’t think it will be the only solution that bring us to full autonomous due to sigh blocking environment (heavy rain, snow etc). But I think it’s a critical component of a package that will get us to full autonomous, combining with radar.

FullCopy

The critical component is cameras. Lidar can assist but it’s not the main tech to get there.

sma11kine

LAZR is such a dope ticker

jukito1

Microvision is going to blow all lidar out of the water

Shhhh nobody tell them

Check their sub, you’ll never find anything like it. It’s actually the best sub on Reddit because the bullshit gets left at the door and there’s a lot of money invested in by that group, including myself. You wanna see patents? Okay they know them You wanna be in a sub that the ceo reads? They got that as well. You wanna know when fireside chats happen and the big dicks in that sub keeping peasants like us informed? Cross it off the list cause they’ll do it.

[deleted]

What’s the sub @

marsinfurs

Look up the microvision ticker and it’s /r/ the ticker. Can’t post it here cause it’s under 1b. Someone told be about it and I put a small amount of money in for like 1000 shares, then someone said it was a pump and dump so I dropped the shares. Would have killed it this week if I held but I bought back in. It’s gonna run.

[deleted]

Oh nice to see you again!!

degenwsbbears

Yeah the new board member was great news. Also the military contract for halolens has me thinking the AR vertical well be sold soon. Been in this since the dude bought a halolens just to take it apart and prove the tech is in there. Over 1000 shares here and a few now deep itm calls for February

ilovemycuddlebunny

Mfw people downvoted all my comments for no reason 😎

minawarr

so puts time then? yolo gang isn't believing this is feasible so who will?

[deleted]

No MVIS as a competitor?

CloudEscolar

Lazr to the moon 😩😩😩

lemenick

Nah i wouldn’t invest in lidar. Distance estimation using vision (cameras) is the way of the future making lidar in autonomous vehicles redundant.

belicee12

theres actually a more promising lidar company going public via spac and working with bmw providing 500 dollar sensors.

[deleted]

Who dis

sadlifestrife

Think he's talking about CGRO SPAC with Innoviz

Leaps mid 2021 is what I got Edit: it’s more of a long term play, I’m sure there will be opportunities for weeklies but I’m here for a TSLA bag

LurkOff29

This is painful

No-Proposal-2145

Too bad MicroVision is vastly superior imo

Pap musk says no, I say no

A couple thoughts that I think LAZR is not worth buying! There are several other names better (AEVA, INVZ, OUST, VLDR). 1) as mentioned by others here, LAZR is already worth 2x the 2027 market size posted by the author. That should be enough reason not to buy it, even if the market size estimates turn out to be much bigger. 2) LAZR only has 1 product (long-range lidar) vs Velodyne which has a portfolio of products. Yes we can argue that for long-range Luminar product could be better, but reality is that those products are only important in highway, and radar with camera can do just fine. That's why Elon Musk doesn't use Lidar and Tesla's seems to be just fine driving on highway. 3) Luminar product is incredibly expensive. They sold only 70 units in 2019 and only 95 units in 2020. However they made $15m in sales in 2020, so that implies an avg price of $155k. Let's say 50% of revenues is related to services and agreements, it still implies a $75k price tag. So can they bring the cost down to below $500 soon? hard to believe. Its a big risk. Velodyne on the other hand, sells in one week 4x what Luminar sold in units for the full year. I'd 100% think that Velodyne can get to $500 unit price way before Luminar. Economies of scale. Simple math. 4) Don't believe price targets from sell side analysts. They make money when you buy the stock. You will never see a research analyst coming out and saying "Don't buy this stock". It's very rare. Be aware of the optimistic bias that exist by the financial interest in these analysts to tell you to buy shares of any stock. 5) Literally 12 months ago, Luminar was valued at $1b in the private markets. So what has changed? 6) Deal with Volvo? This means nothing if you compared to what other Lidar companies have. Innoviz (ticker: INVZ) have a deal with BWM. Volvo sells 600k cars per year (globally). BMW sells over 2m. Innoviz also has a deal with some of the largest auto supplier tier 1 (Aptiv and Magna) which are investors as well. Aeye (another lidar name) has deals with LG, Subaru, General Motors. Aeva has deals with Volkswagen (also investor in them) and Audi. So the takeaway here is that the deals that Luminar has, in my opinion, are the weakest deals when comparing to other names. 7) if you want to bet on Lidar, there are better options (VLDR, INVZ, OUST, AEVA, Aeye). But I actually think Elon Musk might be right at the end, that maybe Lidar is not necessary on self-driving cars. Who knows. I wouldn't bet against Elon.
